To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

The woman in the McDonald's case held the coffee cup between her legs (near her crotch) while driving.

She was a passenger in the car, and it was parked, when the incident occurred.

Florissant · 11/06/2023 20:25

Ah. She wasn't driving but she held it next to her crotch. Good thinking.

Given this is clearly a busy coffee shop with people coming in after OP, you also have to consider that OP
is a shit customer? Because surely if it was shit service, it wouldn’t be so busy?

Just a thought…

Or the OP is so memorable that the person who served her waited for her return to exact some kind of revenge?

Clafoutie · 11/06/2023 20:32

Casilero · 11/06/2023 20:07

Maybe shaky is the wrong word, but if you get burned, you do get that weird hot and cold clammy, slightly faint feeling as your body tries to adjust internal temperature. Surely, you've experienced this? Have you never ever experienced extreme temperatures where this has happened? Either from a hot country, burning yourself on the grill, oven, or indeed scalding your mouth?

Maybe you're very young/lucky/not clumsy and this has never happened to you. But it's a bit mean to openly mock someone who has experienced this.

Agreed. A mouth burn can be much worse than just a quick ‘ouch that’s hot’. It can be extremely painful and last several days. I can only assume that people being unkind have never experienced it, or they lack empathy of any sort.

Or maybe uk service has a lot to learn.
Loads of places are busy because there’s little choice in some areas and crap food/service is what we expect.
If you live somewhere with choice or just better service you get it.
I’ve been to plenty of cafes ( usually garden centres because my mum needs a sit down) where the food and drink are appalling, Stale cake, cream with scones that tastes a bit of fir fridge burnt, overly expensive cold coffee. Served by people that give no shits.

How many times have you returned to the shit service places? Where the staff look you up
sbd down…..

if you return, then more fool you!

Maybe customers have a lot to learn in the UK, don’t return to shit service places 🤷‍♀️

@Billyho it's called giving the benefit of the doubt.

Ah. She wasn't driving but she held it next to her crotch. Good thinking.

She was taking the lid off to put sugar or milk in it.

The end result shouldn’t ever have been life changing injuries and multiple skin grafts.

She only ever sued to cover the costs of her medical care, the payout wasn’t limited by her actions.

Nah. Loads of shit places with shit customer service are busy.

And reading this thread - with posters implying OP is out of order complaining about poor service and a boiled coffee I totally get why.

I was livid when DS' Ice lolly gave him brain freeze. Sainsbury's must have it in for him. The freezer was too freezing.

Coffee should never be boiling hot! Lollies and ice creams should be straight from the freezer. Hth for any further ridiculous comparisons you have!

@Billyho it's called giving the benefit of the doubt.

@Rollonannualeave its called looking at the likelihood……. accusing someone of taking and instant dislike and looking you up and down and then remembering you (look you up and down again) and deciding they’d serve you scalding coffee, slam it down, hear them talking about their next victim? …. Seems quite out there?

it’s really not likely is it 😂

Or maybe we will see a crazy barista in the news really soon.

What some posters, including myself, are saying is that service is shit enough in the UK that you don't need to assume that the server doesn't like you. You can just assume that it's shit service, like everywhere else.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 21:00

Ah well. Time for me to leave the thread. Many thanks to those who have provided an empathic response. And former coffee shop workers who have explained, no, coffee i(especially cappuccino) is not meant to be the temperature of lava.

Still can't eat or drink anything hot but hoping I will feel better tomorrow.

Coffee shouldn't be scalding, but often is. There was a Mcdonald's case a few years ago where a woman was seriously scalded by a cup of Mcdonald's coffee. People make a joke of it, but she had the cup in her lap as she got herself organised in the car, the cup was insulated so she couldn't tell how hot the coffee was and when it spilt, she got third degree burns to her thighs and 'pelvic area' (wording from the court case). Third degree burns are the most serious, full-thickness burns. She was badly injured, and the burns were life-changing.

Ideally, coffee should be made with water that is just below boiling point. The milk should not be boiled - if it is, it tastes disgusting.

I doubt the woman was acting out of any personal dislike - it sounds like she hates her job and shouldn't be there. But the OP is right about the temperature of the coffee. It shouldn't be that hot.

I complain …… then never frequent again!

Although I wouldn’t dream of complaining that “someone looked me up and down” because that’s crazy, I’d just go elsewhere!

RedHelenB · 11/06/2023 21:12

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:55

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

Get a grip. I've scalded my tongue numerous times, it's no big deal.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 21:15

Some really unkind people on here!

And what some posters are coming over as is super snarks who are blaming the OP for having any reaction or " the wrong reaction " to some shit service and a shit coffee. And yes it can be the wrong hot.

Good for you. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Love it when we get the template for the correct response, the correct behaviour and the correct frame of mind. 🎖

Perhaps OP was just hopeful that a nice dog friendly place at the end of a walk would be better 2nd time round. And it wasn't . And the crap person serving here gave her bad vibes. What's the big deal?

And all the shite about 'hot' coffee. God Alive.

just looking at the probability of likelihood..

and level of fucking drama!

Anyway, hopefully OP has managed a sandwich and a drink now…

Otherwise, I fear death by hit coffee.
