Tomorrow there is a big concert in our city.
60,000 so hotels are now all full or ridiculously expensive.
A week ago a "friend "(hasn't spoke to him in 10 years ) messaged asking if he could park his camper van on our drive tonight and my partner said yes (which okay it's fine )
Now tomorrow we are also going to this concert and I'm really excited and bought a new outfit and want to look nice.
The plan is to head into town around 1pm (we are lucky it's a 5 min walk to town and 15 to stadium )
Now he is saying they are coming inside for breakfast and a chat -I said okay no worries but in the morning il be getting ready (I want to do my hair /make up nice etc -I don't feel confident without makeup and would never be out with strangers without some make up on)
Partner has said no that's ignorant come and sit with us before you get ready and have breakfast and then quickly get ready.
I said no I'm getting ready then I'll make some breakfast -he said from what he remembers his friend likes early breakfast
Oh well -
Aibu here ?
What difference does it make if I'm getting ready whilst he is chatting with them?
I don't even know the guy

I think that the word 'ignorant' has a double meaning in most areas of the country, being used to mean bad mannered is probably more common

I've never ever heard it used to mean bad mannered. I'll never use it that way. It just doesn't mean that to me.

Anyway OP, your bf is a knobber. Don't let him boss you around. It's your home, your body, your PJs and his friend. Fuck him!

A knob is a handle on a door or appliance. I've never heard it used to mean something derogatory. I'll never use it that way. It doesn't mean that to me.

😂 It's not an attack on you personally that I don't live in the south west and have never heard ignorant used in this informal way.

Anyway I said knobber.

Me neither. I know some people use ignorant in the way OP’s bf does, but it would feel really weird for me to use it in that way. Just like I know what the word ‘minging’ means but I wouldn’t be able to say it with a straight face myself.

SophieStew · 11/06/2023 08:55

I must live near @CrushOnJonah and @mainsfed 😎

Despite being rather old, I have never heard anyone using the word ignorant to mean rude in real life. I wouldn’t use it in that way myself as a result, as it would feel wrong.

I do fully understand the word knobber, and even knob in a context other than meaning door handle.

The fact this thread has derailed in this way demonstrates that plenty of posters are railing against the perceived misuse of ignorant, and so the use of it in the way OPs DH did is the exception.

All that aside, it really sounds like the DH has volunteered his wife to cook breakfast for these friends in a bout of rather selfish bonhomie. Selfish because he’s not the fucker who will actually have to do it.

Stick to your guns @aaratty

He who invited does the catering.

QueefQueen80s · 11/06/2023 09:16

Enforced socialising with people in my home is one of the reasons I LOVE living alone now. Stick to your guns OP! Guests don't dictate breakfast

Sparkletastic · 11/06/2023 09:35

If your DP wants to facilitate this acquaintance's free parking AND free breakfast then he can knock himself out. Nothing to do with you.

piedbeauty · 11/06/2023 09:54

'Ignorant'? That's not what ignorant means. He sounds pretty ignorant himself.

His friends, his guests, his breakfast. I'd come down and say hello when I was ready.

piedbeauty · 11/06/2023 09:55

Yanbu at all. You have a lie-in. Don't change your plans just because your partner wants you to. (He doesn't sound very nice.)

This usage of the word ignorant’ is very common!!

Preps · 11/06/2023 15:32

The Cambridge Dictionary has no problem with this usage.

Ignorant : not polite or showing respect

Love it when people are so convinced they're right on this stuff

polite

1. behaving in a way that is socially correct and shows understanding of and…

I can't believe how many people don't know it's used for being rude

It's not being misused.

Yes, he does

He really doesn’t. The word ignorant means lacking in knowledge. A personal preference can’t be ignorant

Tbf I was reading on another thread that people didn't know what being broke meant.

Some people live in little bubbles I think.

There is an established regional variation where ignorant means rude, uncouth. See multiple replies above.

Preps · 11/06/2023 22:27

I can't believe people are still arguing over this. You only have to look it up in any dictionary or Google it to find it has two clear established meanings.

Do you remember what thread that was, please?! As that sounds mad to me and I’d love to read it. ‘Broke’ is hardly niche!

It has two meanings according to many people on the thread and dictionary definitions (see the pic I've attached).

I had never heard a definition that wasn't 'lack of knowledge', but learned something from this thread.

It's strange people are still questioning it and confidently stating as fact that there's no other meaning for it.

It's ok to just say you didn't know!

Are you from the moth Misuse of the word ignorant up here absolutely kills me. Also we've had big gigs at the stadiums this weekend. That's not what ignorant means.

Anyway I think some random person tipping up and interfering with my me time before a big gig I've looked forward to would annoy me too.

It has two meanings.

Just because loads of people use it incorrectly doesn't make it mean that. It just makes you look stupid to people who know the actual meaning.

I really enjoy using slang and picking terms up, but I think it's really important to actually know proper meaning, as then you can't know when you use things incorrectly and just look stupid. But I mean if you're cool with that, that's absolutely your look out.

It's one of two dictionary definitions though.

Both are listed as the meaning.

I hadn't heard the second one until today but now I know it's a valid use of the word in that second context.

Bizarre to think it can't be even though multiple people have pointed out it's a valid alternative meaning according to dictionaries.
