Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

Please tell me why a sharks life is worth less than a human?

Capitalism.
Christ some humans are worth less than other humans in the world we live in but you're questioning why sharks are lower down the scale!

Lovemusic33 · 09/06/2023 19:41

I agree with those who say that the sea is their territory. We don’t need to be in the sea swimming, surfing etc, we chose to do it and we know the risks. Sharks live in the sea and need to be there.

I do go in the sea (at my own risk) and if I was to get attacked by a shark I wouldn’t want it killed, I would want people to respect the fact it lives in the sea and I was in its territory.

Please tell me why a sharks life is worth less than a human?

If you put your mum and a shark next to each other, and you have to end the life of one, which will you chose?

Obviously you're going to chose your mum, because you're a human, and you empathize with human life.

That shark will possibly kill someone else, and that person's whole family will be heartbroken. Would you allow that to save a shark? I hope not.

In our world, in our time, a human life is worth more than a sharks'.

Anything else is just pointless philosophizing.

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:47

I'd rather see a thread where people showed respect to the human and talked about how they could contribute to less destructive habits that lead to this, but I know that's fantasy land.

It's easier to blame others then change one owns behaviour tbf.

@coronabeer how do you humanely dispatch a shark out of interest?

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/06/2023 19:47

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:18

*It was aTiger shark and sadly once they start attacking AND eating humans, they keep coming back for more human.

It’s not much different from putting down a dangerous dog.*

Except that the shark in being a shark in its own environment. It's awful for the guy but sharks are just one more risk in a sea full of them. If You go into their territory, and it is their territory. it's a risk you run. We don't go hacking hills, trees and mountains to bits when people fall off them. Sharks are just another part of nature. It takes a staggering level of arrogance to insist that we can slaughter animals in their billions yet if a human dies then the shark and sharks generally have to be eliminated at all costs, even at the expense of other species like the young humpback whale who had to be freed from a shark net in Australia. Little wonder the planet is fucked. We think the planet belongs to us when we're just 1 of millions of species who share it.

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:49

#Teamjaws because I wouldn't go frolicking in their home and expect them to be welcoming.

🙄

Megifer · 09/06/2023 19:45

Same, although it was the hoarde of shouting loud, aggressive men all braying around the shark thats put me off more tbh as I'd never go in the sea

Oh, this is exactly what I meant! I have holidayed in a few places with shark-infested waters over the years but I mentally blacklist places as soon as I hear about animal cruelty and neglect.

Boudicasbeard · 09/06/2023 19:50

@Puzzledandpissedoff

The gator thing is a real problem with tourists in Florida because they just don’t have the same awareness. I still refuse to go near any body if open water where I can’t see the bottom because in the back of my mind I’m always think about what’s in there.

I remember being told about the bodies they found at Tarpon Springs when they started the glass bottom boats tours. Gruesome.

My mum’s friend used to regularly find the gator from the nearby lake swimming in their pool. I think the neighbourhood called out the gator guy when it ate someone’s dog.

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:50

Going by the thread you let your mum get eaten as she shouldn't be in there.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 19:50

Obviously I love my Mum more than a shark, in other news I don't care about strangers nearly as much as I do about my Mother, but in the grand scheme of things we might feel that we're more important but ultimately we aren't. Our deaths mean about as much of that of an ant. We're really no more of a loss on a planetary scale and perhaps less considering how much damage we're doing to the planet.(I include myself in that)

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:51

@Boudicasbeard gators terrify me. I would far rather meet a shark in the water than a gator.

Elevel · 09/06/2023 19:53

PoeAFighterAResistanceFighter · 09/06/2023 19:46

I don't normally feel the need to announce either. But the absolute hypocrisy here is galling. It feels a bit racist to point fingers for killing a shark in the exact same way pretty much fish are killed.

I don't care that you eat Quorn. The majority of the moralising twits on this thread don't. That's kinda the point.

I'd rather see a thread where people showed respect to the human and talked about how they could contribute to less destructive habits that lead to this, but I know that's fantasy land.

Yes, I only mentioned it as you're making assumptions about everyone posting on the thread to berate them.
Make the thread then... Just don't expect people to engage when they're put down for once wearing a pair of leather shoes. Much more damaging to try to silence people for eating meat and thinking another case of animal suffering is wrong.

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:53

in other news I don't care about strangers nearly as much as I do about my Mother,

but what if the stranger is wearing a shark outfit?

If my mum made the choice to enter a shark’s territory then that would be her choice 🤣, my mum would also not want the shark to be killed because it ate her, my views come from her.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 19:53

And again a quick Google suggests that the increasing problems with gators are mostly caused by, no prizes for guessing who, humans again.

Nobody is saying the individual deserves to die. This man suffered horrendously.

As humans, we do not need to be in the ocean, swimming around, we simply don't.

Nobody would put a shark above their lives one. Most people still wouldn't blame a wild animal for hunting as its instincts do, in its own habitat. Not a domestic animal in human society- a wild animal.

Ah sorry i see that now 🤦‍♀️

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 19:54

but what if the stranger is wearing a shark outfit?

What if you stopped asking stupid fucking questions?

Boudicasbeard · 09/06/2023 19:55

@troubg

You’d probably never make it to the water with a gator attack. They mostly take prey from the water’s edge. They’re ambush predators- the fuckers- and are extremely well
camouflaged in the water.

My elementary school took us to the Seminole reservation where they do gator wrestling. It is both terrifying and fascinating.

If it was me or them then I would definitely choose me.

Boudicasbeard · 09/06/2023 19:56

@ClaraThePigeon

Does your quick Google include having any experience with actual alligators?

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 09/06/2023 19:56

This is not a unprecedented problem in Sharm, anyone remember the 2010 attacks?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Sharm_El_Sheikh_shark_attacks

coronabeer · 09/06/2023 19:57

Obviously, I wouldn’t know exactly. Maybe with a gun to the head, the way a vet would kill a horse or a sick cow? Certainly not by beating it to death whilst it suffocated.

(And of course, I don’t think they should have killed it in the first place. If a dangerous dog is killed in the UK, it is killed painlessly by a vet, it isn’t left to sadistic people to torture it to death).

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:57

@ClaraThePigeon

now, now, deep breath!

KarmaStar · 09/06/2023 19:58

It was disgusting, made me feel sick to the stomach that the shark was killed like that.

QuintanaRoo · 09/06/2023 19:58

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/06/2023 19:29

They probably wanted to retrieve his body. If your DC was eaten by a shark you are telling me you wouldn't want to get their remains back?

We're talking a shark, not a blue whale, and even a large one could hardly ingest an entire human body. Also, dreadul as it is to think about, it probably spat out anything which became detached, realising this isn't what it would normally eat

I’ve seen the video of the attack. There was nothing left on the surface afterwards and people said the shark went back to eat some remains at one point.

troubg · 09/06/2023 19:59

As humans, we do not need to be in the ocean, swimming around, we simply don't.

@Bananananananananana But as humans we don't need to be in the air or in cars so what is your point. Plus plenty of people do need water for their livelihoods or are those ones ok to be in the ocean because they aren't swimming.
