Shark Attack

Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

Honestly, it feels a bit racist to be condemning people in a comparatively poor North African country for acting to protect their livelihoods. Tourism is vital life blood for so many people in Egypt.

What the hell? You're reaching and sounding quite racist yourself seeing them as 'people in comparatively poor North African country' rather than just people.

RunningUpThatMill · 09/06/2023 20:38

@PoeAFighterAResistanceFighter and that is something I'm not involved in.

Talapia · 09/06/2023 20:38

The poor creature was dragged out of the sea and literally punched/kicked to death. It will have died slowly, painfully and in utter terror. For engaging in its natural behaviour in its own habitat.

These creatures are endangered ffs. Not that it would be acceptable if they weren't! If you don't want to run the risk of being predated on by sea creatures, stay out of the fucking sea.

I agree, what happened was an awful tragedy but it's not acceptable to treat a creature this way.

There are risks to swimming in the sea yet as humans we believe we are invincible and always right.

Humans make choices and our current choice appears to be to decimate every species and destroy the planet for every living creature including ourselves.

I'm dreadfully sorry for the poor man and his family but this ridiculous tit for that behaviour is unacceptable.

The whole vibe of this thread has massive racist whiffs.

Didn't even know before reading the thread that a - presumably white? - Russian bloke did the beating to death. Opinion still unchanged.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:40

Many animals are kept in awful, cruel conditions and needlessly killed here in this country for the meat and animal products industry. How is being crushed to death or gassed any better than this?

chickens aren't cool though

Just stay out of the water and you won't get eaten by one

Or don't because the chances of getting eaten by one are extremely rare.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:40

@NeverDropYourMooncup not sure what thread you are reading....

tillyandmilly · 09/06/2023 20:40

100% agree with you!

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:42

There are risks to swimming in the sea yet as humans we believe we are invincible and always right.

Why do people keep typing this. Someone going for a swim or to cool down is not thinking about being invincible.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:40

@NeverDropYourMooncup not sure what thread you are reading....

The bit where somebody said it was a Russian kid and the dad who did the beating to death?

If I'm wrong, I think that probably covers the racism part, as I don't know the ethnicity of the people on the beach (who could have been other holidaymakers for all I know, which would presumably also include other white people) who did the killing of an endangered species.

baloosbaloos · 09/06/2023 20:44

@troubg cannot believe that the mood of the meeting is “humans should never go in the sea”. this is so good.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:46

Is the way this shark was killed worse than the sharks & other endangered animals killed by nets in Australia? Are people going to boycott Oz like some have said on this thread re Egypt?

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:47

@NeverDropYourMooncup the Russian man was the victim. He died so obviously don't partake in the beating.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:47

didn't

Collectively, yes we do. We think we can swim in the sea and forget that danger exists. I can't see how you can deny this, when this is quite literally what happened to this man. We're sold a lie that the sea is all ice cream, surfing and sandy beaches.

In other parts of Africa that I've visited, people don't go in the sea. You don't see the locals swimming in or really anywhere near the water.

Lachimolala · 09/06/2023 20:48

I feel so incredibly sad for the poor man who lost his life in such a horrific way, and his poor father having to watch. It’s just awful, shouting for his father who couldn’t do anything.

You can, nobody is stopping you. But we all have to face reality. Rare as it may be. We're so sheltered from nature but it's still out there.

Agree it was appalling @Greensleeves

FrostyFifi · 09/06/2023 20:49

What a shitshow.

Great whites kill and injure swimmers and surfers quite frequently in South Africa but no-one is thick enough to respond by beating them to death. They have shark nets and/or spotters on the popular swimming beaches and the surfers take a calculated risk.

Absolute knobs, honestly. Would make me far less likely to want to visit than the shark attack itself.

Billyho · 09/06/2023 20:50

ReleasetheCrackHen · 09/06/2023 18:09

Not always. Police have had to shoot dangerous dogs.
Are you going to swim up to a shark with a syringe?

But you’d pull it from the sea, wrestle it and beat it?

rather than shoot it?

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 20:50

Are people going to boycott Oz like some have said on this thread re Egypt?

Shark nets are one of the reasons why I won't go to Australia.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:51

@NeverDropYourMooncup and tiger sharks aren't endangered.

Some of the UK sharks are though eg Porbeagle & basking. Killed by nets & boats.

CosmosQueen · 09/06/2023 20:51

ReleasetheCrackHen · 09/06/2023 18:30

No. Tiger sharks don’t normally attack, kill and eat humans. They are known to bite, but that is rare almost always non-fatal.

They’re the second deadliest shark after the Great White.

They're near threatened.

As a class, sharks are in dire circumstances due to humans. We should leave them the hell alone.

@FrostyFifi I'm pretty sure more sharks are killed by nets in South Africa then beatings in Eqypt
