I am 37 first of all.
Had a thumping headache due to the heat today so went to buy some paracetamol and picked up 2 boxes. Got to the till and she said 'Sorry, but do you have ID? I just wasn't sure if you were over 18.' I told her my age and she still wouldn't let me have them. Don't drive so didn't have a license on me either.
Aibu to be annoyed? I look very young for my age but this seems ridiculous.

No because its their job and tve shops licence. You could have been an enforcement officer. Or under 18.

PuttingDownRoots · 08/06/2023 18:10

And I say that as someone who got IDed for a birthday candle as it came up as a pyrotechnic!

PinkRiceKrispies · 08/06/2023 18:10

A 37 year old can not look 18 however hard they try.

Take it as a compliment then go to another shop. And now know you need ID in that particular place to buy paracetamol. Its no big deal unless you live in middle of nowhere and there are no other available outlets that sell paracetamol, in which case I'm sure you'd already know their policy on ID

Bananaspliff · 08/06/2023 18:13

YANBU. There is no legal age restriction on buying paracetamol.

Minfilia · 08/06/2023 18:14

YANBU.

im also 37 and still get asked for ID regularly but every single time I tell them I don’t carry ID as I’m 37 they just apologise and let me buy whatever it is!

toomuchfaster · 08/06/2023 18:16

Paracetamol has recently been added to the check 25 campaign. I had to refuse to sell to a lady who was anywhere from 14-20 and had no ID.

ComeOnWill · 08/06/2023 18:16

YANBU

There's no legal age restriction on medicines and as far as I am aware retail outlets make theirs at 16 if they chose to have a policy

My 16 year old has bought paracetamol at Boots before now with no ID checks (hence me knowing the above!)

Needmorelego · 08/06/2023 18:17

@Bananaspliff paracetamol you do have to be 16 to buy. Ibroprofen apparently there isn’t an age restriction. Remember that next time @PinkRiceKrispies - get ibroprofen instead.

SeeingSpots · 08/06/2023 18:17

I thought you could buy paracetamol form 16 in the UK so on that basis as a 37 year old women I would've been pretty pissed off!

Fighterofthenightman1 · 08/06/2023 18:18

What shop was it? They don't need to see ID to legally sell paracetamol

MoominRoo · 08/06/2023 18:18

Would you be pissed off if you got id’d for alcohol? It’s the same concept..
They’re only doing their job.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 08/06/2023 18:19

I'm 32 and in my opinion I haven't aged well. I take great delight in being asked for ID, puts a spring in my step. Certainly wouldn't find it something to whinge about. Then again I carry photo ID in my purse, as I thought most likely did. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Bunnyannesummers · 08/06/2023 18:21

I got refused a pack of cold tablets as I didn’t have acceptable ID. I was 25 at the time, had clearly come from work and was also buying the makings of a salad and dishwasher tablets 😂

Testina · 08/06/2023 18:21

“Take it as a compliment”
I do wish people would stop saying this about looking young, and think about what they’re really saying. Ageing is a privilege and not something we should feel bad about.

It's an individuals reception

You can't tell someone what to think....and it's 25 not 18

Challenge 25

Biglumpycustard · 08/06/2023 18:31

I’m 42 and I look really young. I would be shocked if I didn’t get asked for id. I wished I looked my age. I also have 2 adult children.

MaterDei · 08/06/2023 18:31

I'd be buzzing if I got asked for ID lol

Sussexcricket · 08/06/2023 18:32

I work on the tills at a large supermarket.
It's very hard to judge sometimes but some 16/17 year olds can look much older

PuffinsRocks · 08/06/2023 18:33

Yawn.

AnonyMenOhPee · 08/06/2023 18:33

Once they’ve asked you for ID I don’t think they’re allowed to backtrack even if they stare a bit harder at your face and realise you might be 37 after all

Brefugee · 08/06/2023 18:34

in a country with no government issued ID it is batshit to ask for ID like this. I get the staff have to - but it is completely batshit. 37 doesn't by any stretch of the most vivid imagination look remotely under 18.

(goes for wine and so on.)
Equally batshit is "can't sell you wine while you're with your child"

Sussexcricket · 08/06/2023 18:36

No you can't back track on it
