To be angry they didn't serve me?

I am 37 first of all.
Had a thumping headache due to the heat today so went to buy some paracetamol and picked up 2 boxes. Got to the till and she said 'Sorry, but do you have ID? I just wasn't sure if you were over 18.' I told her my age and she still wouldn't let me have them. Don't drive so didn't have a license on me either.
Aibu to be annoyed? I look very young for my age but this seems ridiculous.

I'm 32 and in my opinion I haven't aged well. I take great delight in being asked for ID, puts a spring in my step. Certainly wouldn't find it something to whinge about. Then again I carry photo ID in my purse, as I thought most likely did. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Yes, you are wrong! People without passports or driving licenses would be completely stuck.

toomuchfaster · 08/06/2023 19:13

@MargotBamborough actually you have to be 16 legally to buy it and I couldn't be sure she was. Definitely not loosing my job over it.

You don't need to be 16, there is no legal restriction.

Of course, your store may have that as their own rule but they shouldn't be telling you this

gogohmm · 08/06/2023 19:20

It's odd how strict some stores are, my dd is much younger, looks about 15 yet she gets served without id go figure

Hotspoon · 08/06/2023 19:21

Knew this would be Poundland, happens here all the time. There isn’t a lot it common sense used and I often see people who are clearly adults be denied a red bull etc.

Even if you've got them these days, which many don't due to the cost many people don't want to faff about taking them with them along with a bag to carry tem in when they can instead just take their phone. Especially if you're not actually going somewhere you think you'd need ID.

Odile13 · 08/06/2023 19:23

To be honest - when I worked in a shop I asked a woman for proof of her age when she was buying scissors (the message flashed up on the till). She was clearly annoyed at me but showed her driving license and she was in her 30s. I felt embarrassed but it was drummed into me to ask if I was unsure as you can get sacked if you make a mistake. It wasn’t done with any malice.

I didn’t @ you in the quote because I wasn’t wanting to have a particular go at you on this thread. I’m not treating you like an imbecile. Comments like this, lighthearted and throwaway in the moment though they may be, add up and still contribute to (and show) the general view that young looking is good and old looking is bad. And I’d love to see us (especially about women) move away from that shit.

This. ^

I am so sick of these tedious threads, where 30 somethings/early 40 somethings fling their toys about in faux rage, because they have allegedly been asked for ID to buy a knife/paracetamol/vodka/red bull etc. 'I am just soooo angerry...' Angry they spout furiously. LOL jog on - NO-ONE is going to be angry at someone wanting proof they are over 25 (if they are nearly 40/around 40...)

But yeah you're right, this 'be flattered someone thinks you look 15 years younger' bullshit is tedious as fuck. As you say, what is wrong with looking your age? Why do people always have to post threads on here saying 'oooh I look so YOUNG! Woe is me!' 🙄Only to have posters say 'oooh U R sooo lucky OP to look soooo young!' Hmm

Also, as a number of posters have said, most of these people do NOT look much younger. Fact is, some people can't tell peoples ages. NO-ONE looks more than 8-10 years younger than their real age, not when you look properly. NO-ONE. And as I said, WTF is wrong with looking your age anyway? Confused

Funny how people never seem to post threads on here claiming someone thought they were 10 years older than their age. 🙄

@ComeOnWill it is a law! We've just company training from Head Office of a large pharmacy chain.

ifonly4 · 08/06/2023 19:28

Appreciate it doesn't feel easy at the time, but take it as a compliment that someone was questioning that you looked far younger than 25. To cover themselves and their staff, we have to Challenge 25, and yes, I've got it wrong and queried the age of someone mid 35s. Might not be the best job in the world and much lower paid than some, but many of us do our best to follow guidelines.

Modernmuse · 08/06/2023 19:30

It's because they threaten staff with the sack if they serve someone underage, supermarkets will have constant stream of testers come through, the store can and will lose its licence to sell these items if they fail to correctly ID someone.
I work in a store and to be honest l wish we didn't sell these items, along with alcohol and knives, nothing but a pain in the backside and exactly why l won't work on a checkout anymore.

It does state on the NHS website there are no restrictions.

Did they explain when this law was passed and how do you manage prescriptions now?

TiredArse · 08/06/2023 19:33

According to the NHS website there is no legal minimum age to buy medication. So they were being massively unreasonable. https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/what-age-can-children-buy-over-the-counter-otc-medicines/

Seriously?! Why is it a 'compliment' for someone to think you're under 25 when you're 37?

Why? WHY is it a compliment? What's wrong with looking your age? Confused

PuddlesPityParty · 08/06/2023 19:36

They’re probs scared of secret shoppers and the like

321zyx · 08/06/2023 19:37

It's related to the quantity you are buying rather than age (in my experience) - I only seem able to buy 1 x packet of paracetamol (or Ibuprofen) per shop at one time i.e. can only buy 1 x packet of paracetamol and 1 x packet of Ibuprofen in one purchase

Florissante · 08/06/2023 19:38

YADBU.

aloris · 08/06/2023 19:40

Wow, that's awful. I cannot imagine having to go from store to store with a pounding headache, trying to find one that would sell me something as basic as paracetamol.

chupachucks · 08/06/2023 19:40

Don't worry OP I know some really rough looking 25 year olds, so they were just being cautious 🤣

Being refused an item because of it is the issue here.

Oblomov23 · 08/06/2023 19:45

I disagree with most. No woman that's age should be asked for ID, it's ridiculous.

DerekFaker · 08/06/2023 19:45

Biglumpycustard · 08/06/2023 18:31

I’m 42 and I look really young. I would be shocked if I didn’t get asked for id. I wished I looked my age. I also have 2 adult children.

Sure, Jan.

Florissante · 08/06/2023 19:46

Oh, please. It's a standard policy that should be applied to both sexes.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/06/2023 19:48

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 08/06/2023 18:57

Are you a horse? 😂🐴

If she's anything like my FIL, she'd have been holding them in her hand when she made the invitation...

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/06/2023 19:48

so a 16 year old with a headache/period pains needs to find an adult to go and buy them paracetamol? That seems quite unfair.

toomuchfaster · 08/06/2023 19:50

@ComeOnWill no, we don't learn the detail of the law being made. Just what the law is and we have to keep to it.
And prescriptions are a different law, it's not a purchase.
