I am 37 first of all.
Had a thumping headache due to the heat today so went to buy some paracetamol and picked up 2 boxes. Got to the till and she said 'Sorry, but do you have ID? I just wasn't sure if you were over 18.' I told her my age and she still wouldn't let me have them. Don't drive so didn't have a license on me either.
Aibu to be annoyed? I look very young for my age but this seems ridiculous.

It was in Poundland. I understand stuff like alcohol and the need to ID but paracetamol is just ridiculous if someone is clearly over 18. Was really embarrassed as well.

in a country with no government issued ID it is batshit to ask for ID like this. I get the staff have to - but it is completely batshit. 37 doesn't by any stretch of the most vivid imagination look remotely under 18.

(goes for wine and so on.)
Equally batshit is "can't sell you wine while you're with your child"

I think this is a fair comment it's bloody annoying that to purchase something as essential as paracetamol you have to have to pay for ID and effectively take it with you at all times should you risk getting a headache and dare to want to buy something as basic as paracetamol.

Sussexcricket · 08/06/2023 18:40

look remotely under 18.

It's think 25

TequilaNights · 08/06/2023 18:41

No, if they don't think you look old enough they are within their rights to ask for ID, sorry, but it isn't a new concept.

LookWhosInsideAgain · 08/06/2023 18:41

I’m also 38 and, when out for dinner recently, the waiter asked me for ID when I ordered a glass of wine. I was about to start digging in my bag before I realised he was doing it as a little joke, like waiters sometimes do to grannies. I’d have much preferred if he was being genuine because I was fucking mortified 😭

Yfory · 08/06/2023 18:44

YABU. I got ID when I bought a fruit knife. Im 45 but look a lot younger. The staff member is just doing their job.

NeedPizza · 08/06/2023 18:44

It's always the 30s that kick off about this. The younger ones are used to it, the older ones are 'visibly over 25'
Challenge 25 is not a new thing.
The person was doing their job. There are enforcement officers that check that are ambiguous in their age, dress older etc. Leave the till person alone. They are personally liable, as well as the business and could possibly lose their job.
You admit you look young. <shrug> better safe than unemployed and in debt!

The NHS website says that there is no legal age limit for buying over the counter so they are being unreasonable and over-zealous IMO

https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/what-age-can-children-buy-over-the-counter-otc-medicines/#:~:text=There%20are%20no%20legal%20age,sale%20of%20medicines%20to%20children.

Perhaps. But it's called responsible retailing. Want your 14yr old to overdose on paracetamol? Bet youd be the first one to come in and scream at us for selling them 5 packets!

toomuchfaster · 08/06/2023 18:16

Paracetamol has recently been added to the check 25 campaign. I had to refuse to sell to a lady who was anywhere from 14-20 and had no ID.

Why? It's not illegal for under 18s to buy paracetamol.

PinkRiceKrispies · 08/06/2023 18:49

You can't buy 5 packets at a time anyway to be fair.
Still think it's ridiculous because common sense surely has to come into it at some point. As I said, alcohol, fireworks etc I agree but paracetamol is just ridiculous.

But there is no such thing as old enough. It's paracetamol, not alcohol or cigarettes.

MakesMeFeelSad · 08/06/2023 18:50

At 37 it's very unlikely that the op or anyone else looks so young that someone would think hmm is this person over 25 I'm not sure

I think sometimes they are just being difficult

Sheruns · 08/06/2023 18:50

I know what you mean op. I get ided all the time and I'm almost 36. It seems to have started this year and been constant. It's annoying because I pay using my phone so rarely take a purse with ID anywhere but lesson learnt and now I do.

A lady actually asked for my ID the other day, saw it said 1987 and said oh God I'm sorry!

Generally don't mind too much except when I'm clearly doing a full weekly shop with washing powder and all the boring stuff and they ask. Like a seventeen year old chancer would be buying seven meals worth of food and a cheeky bottle of wine!

MotherOfClogs · 08/06/2023 18:51

Meh, last time I was IDed I told them to look at my teeth. That fixed it.

SeeingSpots · 08/06/2023 18:51

You Can't buy 5 packets at once and I'd hope anyone of any age trying to do so would raise alarm bells and be refused a sale.

An adult of 37 trying to buy one pack is not at all similar. I'm all for responsible retailing but common sense is also pretty useful at times.

Mariposista · 08/06/2023 18:52

I was in the jacuzzi with my friend aged 38. We both had swimming caps on, and the lifeguard came over and asked her how old she was, in case she was under 16. We were in hysterics, she is a married mother of 2 and a detective inspector. The poor boy scuttled off incredibly embarrassed. Cheek - he didn't ask me hahaha she didn't dare say what her job was, he'd have been too scared to come back to work.

ComeOnWill · 08/06/2023 18:53

Does Challenge 25 apply in stores when there are no legal restrictions in place?

I assumed it was to stop older looking young teens buying age restricted items

Oftentimes · 08/06/2023 18:54

I’d have asked to speak to someone else, any other member of staff would do. There’s no way there’s 2 people working in one shop that are stupid enough to not see that you were older.

Bournetilly · 08/06/2023 18:55

It’s challenge 25 so as you say you look young you could look under 25.

I agree it’s ridiculous though, they refused to let me buy some plastic cutlery recently because it contained plastic knifes and I didn’t have any ID. I’m 30, was in my work uniform and had my work badge, was also buying multiple other party supplies.

ThereIbledit · 08/06/2023 18:56

I'd be delighted that somebody thought I looked that young tbh

I didn’t @ you in the quote because I wasn’t wanting to have a particular go at you on this thread. I’m not treating you like an imbecile. Comments like this, lighthearted and throwaway in the moment though they may be, add up and still contribute to (and show) the general view that young looking is good and old looking is bad. And I’d love to see us (especially about women) move away from that shit.

A 37 year old can not look 18 however hard they try.

You haven't met my DIL. She was still being asked for ID to buy alcohol, past her 40th birthday.

Behave, it's challenge 25 so those late teens/early 20s that people aren't sure of should be asked for ID. no one mistakes a 37 year old for under 18 so common sense should be applied

The majority of 14 years olds don't pass for 25, lots look older than 14 but still ! And if they are really intent on taking an od they'll go from place to place until they get enough to do it
