To be angry they didn't serve me?

I am 37 first of all.
Had a thumping headache due to the heat today so went to buy some paracetamol and picked up 2 boxes. Got to the till and she said 'Sorry, but do you have ID? I just wasn't sure if you were over 18.' I told her my age and she still wouldn't let me have them. Don't drive so didn't have a license on me either.
Aibu to be annoyed? I look very young for my age but this seems ridiculous.

There's that disease that can make children look much older than they are, Robin Williams was in a movie about it. So someone that looks elderly could in fact be a child. It's better just to ask for ID every time and for people to remember to take it with them when they go shopping.

Do you mean progeria? I'm sure you could tell that was a child with an extremely rare life limiting condition!

in a country with no government issued ID it is batshit to ask for ID like this. I get the staff have to - but it is completely batshit. 37 doesn't by any stretch of the most vivid imagination look remotely under 18.

(goes for wine and so on.)
Equally batshit is "can't sell you wine while you're with your child"

The legal age to buy is 18, but if you look under 25 to the cashier they can ID you.
"Challenge 25".
Because it's hard to tell if someone is say 16 or 19 but 25 easier.

You actually can't purchase more than 2 packs of painkillers per transaction 🙂

I am pretty sure that the smart shop in sainsburys needed the staff member to confirm I was old enough to purchase age 6+ calpol not that long ago. I am nearly 50 and wasn't asked for ID but it needed the staff to authorise it first. Bought gaviscon today in a tesco express.

Funny enough I've just had to do my think 25 refresher at work this is one of the questions.

Deeply irritating. Try EasiID - it’s a Post Office digital is so you can keep it on your smartphone and it’s government certified as secure.

The person serving you is personally liable for a fine of you are underage and they are caught serving you. It’s irritating but I don’t blame them if you look young because they are probably on or barely over minimum wage and would never be able to afford to pay a fine like that.

Yes if you are underage (which is 15 in this case). Not if you are 24.

Oh yes 100%, I get that. But if you were young and unsure could you risk it and be wrong? Probably not.
To you or me, the OP might have been clearly over the required age and be pretty certain you’d be ok but a young and naive kid on NMW might have heard “if you let someone buy something without ID you’ll be fined” and forgotten the context of “and they turn out to be underage”. It is annoying but I can see why some people just aren’t prepared to take the risk.
I’m unfortunately of the age where I rarely get mistaken for potentially underage 😝

Right. But when I worked in a supermarket, the company used to send under 25s in for a test purchase. Failing involved retraining and for a month afterwards every single ARS transaction had to be approved by a supervisor.
