Do you inform your next door neighbours every time you’re having a bbq?

Last weekend my family and I had a bbq. The following day (Monday) I saw next door neighbour- I wouldn’t say I know them very well but always polite and say hi, smiles etc. This time however she looked mightily annoyed and said along the lines of ‘next time you decide to have a stinking bbq in your garden please let me know in advance, my washing was out drying and it got ruined. I had to do the whole lot again’. (It was a standard bbq, so yes bbq smells but nothing unusual). I was a bit taken aback by her tone but replied and said ‘I’m really sorry, I didn’t even think. Next time I’ll give you a knock and you can take your washing in.’ She replied and said ‘No I won’t be taking my washing in, if I have washing out you won’t be able to have a bbq!’ And she stormed off.

Now, I’ll be honest it didn’t even occur to me to let the neighbours know I was having a bbq but yes ok I see that in future it would be courteous to let them know. But AIBU to think that even if NDN has clothes out I can have the bbq anyway?!

We don't have a bbq but my neighbour (terrace house, two doors away) often has them. I just enjoy the smell and the summery feeling the smell gives me. It wouldn't even cross my mind that they should tell me.

Even if you are not bothered by BBQs yourself it's not exactly hard to let your neighbours know if you are having one if they have their laundry out. It takes two minutes surely.

I'd always send a text if my neighbours had their laundry out.

@marapournumber4 yeah we've got highs of 24 today Grin its due to be 28 tomorrow and we're already complaining!

Thank you for your explanation Smile

I mean, I'd be annoyed if my washing was out and got smoke on it, but I'd just bring it in and not say anything. However when we have done them in our garden, I've let the neighbours know if they've got washing out

I don't actually know anyone who hangs their washing out. It surprises me how much people talk about it on here.

I have a tumble drier and I thought most people who can afford one have one or a washer drier.

I know people who live in places where there is a specific covenant against hanging washing out -as it's perceived to 'lower the tone'"!

It rains most of the time!

I have a tumble dryer but you cannot beat washing dried outside! BBQ weather is just the weather you’d hang washing out

I time my washing based on the weather. No sun, no wash.

We do have a tumble drier and use it all the time in winter, but it takes five minutes to hang the washing out and saves a fortune in the summer.

What do you do from September-March?

I could afford one, but it's more the eco side of it that I don't like. Even using reusable nappies I found they dried on airers. I use airers in the house, that I can just pick up and put outside when it's dry.

Hang it out for a few scant hours of sun and then bring it in to dry further. No washing on rainy days.

This is going to seem like a really stupid, naive question - but do you have terraced houses and close proximity houses?

In some areas yep and still, it wouldnt be a thing to door knock with a bbq warning
There is a bbq in our general area a couple times a week all year, inc us
no warnings given or received in almost 3 years of being here

AberdeenGirl · 13/06/2023 09:24

Invite them next time

xogossipgirlxo · 13/06/2023 09:29

What a tool. No, I never inform my neighbours, same as they don't inform me. Everyone's fine.

Everyone on MN freaks out at noise and music from neighbours gardens but seem weirdly chilled about BBQ's.

Other peoples noise doesn't affect me or give me extra washing. BBQ's mean I'm rushing around sometimes rewashing laundry needed for the next day.

I've never even had to rewash my own clothes after having a BBQ Confused

So bizarre.

Sugarfree23 · 13/06/2023 13:08

I think it depends if it gas or charcoal. Gas is OK, charcoal quite smelly and lingers

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 13/06/2023 13:19

My washing has genuinely never been affected by a neighbours bbq.

no one lets anyone know here if they’re having one and no one cares. Down our road no one even cares if you’re having a bonfire or if the neighbours are smoking weed in their back garden. The only thing that gets complained about is the family who let their dog bark for hours on end.

were a fairly young area though where people are too busy getting on with their lives to worry about what their neighbours are up to.
