Partners step dad has a locked room in family home

They have a spare bedroom which he has a padlocked door on.

They live together partners mum and him and there two children. Age 15 and 12

He works from home drawing up roofs. He didn't go to uni etc and isn't top of his company etc (not to be putting it down) but there's no reason for the lock on the door for this work. He isn't doing really big deals. Just there regular things. People in the office wouldn't have a lock etc. it would all just be out on the tables. My partner works there too so I asked about set up. No one's work is locked away. It's open plan. They have visitors in etc. only certain people do the big jobs even they aren't locked away.

His kids are much too old for going in and messing up his work. And they could easily be told don't go in and touch the work.

I don't like him. Hes very narcissistic and inappropriate and creepy. Especially to younger girls

No one has ever seen in his room. His wife doesn't go in, he spends a lot of time in it. It is very much don't go in or he will be very angry if anyone did or tried to. Not that they could because it's padlocked off.

Am I right in feelings it's off or is it just because he's very narcissistic? I personally would hate it and feel very uncomfortable if it is just for the work I'd want to know the code too. But his wife doesn't and isn't allowed in

Padlocked room in the house?

Inappropriate and creepy towards young girls?

I'd be worried that he has a lot of indecent images of children in that room.

Blinkingheckythump · 04/06/2023 18:03

Yeah that's creepy

ThatFraggle · 04/06/2023 18:03

Locked from visitors. Fine. That his actual wife has never seen inside. Odd. Immediately I would think it's filled with some kink thing.

Quitelikeit · 04/06/2023 18:03

Eurghhh trust your instinct

MochiDonutt · 04/06/2023 18:03

I wonder if he's a secret drinker? I know someone who did something similar and that's where they hid their alcohol (found out about it after their death).

But you're allowed to not like him regardless obviously.

Porn of dubious content
..

Sunnyfeelgood · 04/06/2023 18:04

This is super off. Coupled with the dodgy around young girls thing. Why is my brain going to absolute worst case scenario that someone is in there?! That is highly unlikely... but I would be keeping an eye and ear out whenever I went round there.

Sorry I know I completely blew that out of proportion 😂 but it always strikes me as weird when men hide children in their house and none of the family seems to know.

ssd · 04/06/2023 18:05

Id be relieved if it was just drink

SleepingStandingUp · 04/06/2023 18:05

So your partner lives with his Mom and Step Dad and your partners two kids, or your partners siblings?

How do you know he's inappropriate around young girls? How young?

SchoolShenanigans · 04/06/2023 18:05

I'd be reporting it to the police. It could be part of a bigger picture you're not aware of (historic abuse, it may trigger something in an investigation etc). Or it could be totally legal but that's to them to decide.

The poor wife, afraid to confront her husband :(

electriclight · 04/06/2023 18:05

His wife is a fool for putting up with it. Who on earth would allow a locked room in their own house? I don't have any advice though. My imagination would be running away with me but you don't know why it's locked so not worth speculating.

Hubblebubble · 04/06/2023 18:06

My first thought was that he's holding someone hostage. Next that he's melting down bodies in a tub of acid. It's creepy in a blue beard way.

electriclight · 04/06/2023 18:06

On reflection, think I'd be going in through the window.

Americano75 · 04/06/2023 18:07

I really, really hope it's their sex room but either way I wouldn't be picking that lock.

ThatFraggle · 04/06/2023 18:08

Is it a basement, a la Frizel?

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 04/06/2023 18:08

You’ve seen the Inside No 9 episode with Nicola Walker, right…?

It’s definitely weird. Also, how did it come about? Did they buy the house together then that room got locked off?

Watchthedoormat · 04/06/2023 18:10

Very strange.
I'm thinking the wife must surely know what is in there though or she'd be imagining allsorts.
I can't imagine living in my home and being locked out of one of the rooms.
What is she like?

dooneyousmugelf · 04/06/2023 18:11

The locked room wouldn't bother me at all. People can do what they want in their own homes etc

The inappropriate and creepy behaviour towards girls would bother me very much.

Boomboom22 · 04/06/2023 18:11

Someone said call the police. What will they do? It is really weird but it is his house and surely he can padlock whatever he wants in his own house?
Yes listen out just in case but I'd find that highly unlikely. Possibly computer with child abuse images on he doesn't want anyone to accidentally find. Maybe things he wants to protect his children from? Could be anything. Could be totally innocent.

Vitriolinsanity · 04/06/2023 18:14

Why would the police be interested in a locked room in a private house?

Maybe the roof designing is a cover for his job as a code breaker for MI5.

Maybe he just wants his own space for peace and contemplation.

What does your DP'd mother say? Is she scared or does she just think "well, it's DH's private space and as long as I don't have to vacuum it whatever?"

This.

electriclight · 04/06/2023 18:18

So a padlock on the outside, he opens the door without any seeing inside as he enters, and then another lock on the inside? Seems so unlikely to me. Surely you have asked him what's in there?

Mumdiva99 · 04/06/2023 18:23

My husband works from home and has a lock on his door. He locks it if we have guests or go away. Even when not locked I don't really go in as it's his space. Nothing untoward.....he just doesn't want anyone touching his work stuff. Nothing wrong with that.....

Yep this is what I was thinking

Daleksatemyshed · 04/06/2023 18:27

Creepy. Even if your work is confidential you don't really need a locked room. I think getting in there could raise some very interesting anwers.
