6 And 7 year olds playing with their football in the park, bloody dog comes over and grabs the ball and bursts it. No sign of dog owner 2 v upset children.

OP posts:

I don't think the OP should just buy cheap balls in case an off lead dog bursts it.

Personally I would never take expensive kit to the park just because could so easily get lost or ruined.

When I was younger we always took cheap balls etc. to the park and kept the decent stuff for home.

Your dog sounds like a right dick.

No, her dog sounds like an animal who is reacting to people having behaved like dicks.

It is not uncommon for mistreated dogs to have things thrown/kicked at them, so of course they won't treat balls as fun

StarDolphins · 01/06/2023 15:18

This happened to my DD, she got upset but we’ve surely got to put it into perspective & have a laugh about it. Otherwise they become neurotic adults. Could you have found the owners & askedfor them to replace the ball.

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts what an odd way to live 😂

Skinnermarink · 01/06/2023 15:08

Well what are you going to do to the actual dog? Make it do community service?

Make it bite its selfish owner with its sharp teeth. And then laugh it off.

Why is that odd? 🤷‍♀️

SparklyBlackKitten · 01/06/2023 15:21

Meh

They should feel a bit miffed perhaps
Not "very upset"😬

The tide is turning against nuisance dogs and their idiot owners. Pubs here have reintroduced dog bans as have corner shops.

I'd be furious. I'm fed up of living amongst so many dogs who poop everywhere, jump up at me, bark loudly at cafes, leave their stinking urine up the side of every wall and on every beach, try to steal my toddlers ice cream. We shouldn't have to tolerate dogs' bad behaviour. They are unpredictable animals anyway and shouldn't really be pets but that's something else altogether.

Picnickers in parks behave very badly, have you ever seen the mess they leave behind for locals to 'enjoy' the next morning? Humans are pretty disgusting to be honest .🙄

It's not me going down the park bursting random children's footballs for a laugh.

I don't think the OP should just buy cheap balls in case an off lead dog bursts it.

I think people should have control of their dogs and pay for property they damage.

There is a huge difference between teaching your kids to wail and gnash their teeth in the face of a relatively minor drama, and wanting to have the out of control PTS because it inconvenienced someone.

It really is time for dogs to be licenced again. With a visible collar/harness tag. Service dogs, free of charge, others depending on the type of dog, and so on. Less if the owners do training etc. (and the licence being dependent on insurance)

And we have rules and laws to police their behaviour. We don't, in an ideal society, just laugh it off.

Who went to the park to deliberately burst a kids ball for a laugh?? 🤔 Are you on the right thread?

I'm waiting to hear why that's odd too. Everything you've said sounds pretty sensible to me!

I don't think it's fair to just tell the OP that her and her children need to have resilience. This would have terrified me as a child, I was bitten by a neighbours rottweiler as a child. If a dog had bounded over to me playing in the park and bit my ball I'd have been really scared, why should I build resilience?

I had major pelvic surgery recently and was out walking on the moor trying to recover through walking and a dog jumped up at me - I was terrified it would catch my stitches and told the owner this and he looked at me as though I was being ridiculous. I shouldn't need to change my response to that, it's a genuine and proportionate fear.

The resilience comment also stands in respect of your first paragraph. Your fear might be explainable, but being terrified in this situation wouldn’t have helped - whereas some resilience would have been better for you.

If it was my dog, I’d been MORTIFIED and would replace the ball (but I wouldn’t let my dog have the opportunity to do this).

If it was my ball, I’d be a bit annoyed but convince myself and DC to see the funny side, because there is zero benefit to stewing on it and being angry/upset.

MasterBeth · 01/06/2023 15:26

Can anyone actually tell me what the funny side of having a dog come up and burst your football is?

Mykittensmittens · 01/06/2023 15:26

my DS was asked by a dog walker in the park, where DS was playing with his mate on the actual football pitch with goals, to stop because their dog finds the balls irresistible and they couldn’t be liable for what would happen. Sadly I wasn’t there to give a retort because I most certainly would have.

on the beach at Easter, my 3yo niece made a sandcastle. Two dog walkers, paying no attention to their dog whatsoever, passed. The dog pissed up the sandcastle and my nieces bucket and spade - the owners finally looked - and just shrugged.

and yesterday, two people walking down our road (which is privately owned and they shouldn’t fucking be on anyway, but I’m trying not to be a killjoy blocking off a shortcut to some local woods) deep in conversation ignoring their off lead dog who stopped and took a massive runny shit on my front grass.

I know it’s not everyone but it’s still utterly disrespectful and annoying. People like the above really tarnish dog owners.

Well it’s not really but that’s life isn’t it, laugh or you cry, you’re a long time dead, it’s a football not your pet tortoise.

You know that really is not true . I walk my pup in country parks and beaches local to me , I'm very lucky to live close by beaches and country parks , and by far the biggest menace to these places are humans .

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 01/06/2023 15:28

Sheldoncoopersspot · 01/06/2023 14:32

It's annoying but with the amount of dog attacks in the news lately it's only a ball and not your children being attacked.

Surely the point is it could have been a child rather than a ball.

Hate unaccompanied and uncontrolled dogs!! Ugh.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/06/2023 15:28

@Skinnermarink someone with some sense!

So many kids on here scared of every little thing. Yes annoying and out of order for a dog to burst your ball. Ask for money to get a new one. But how is that scary?

God knows how these kids will grow up and survive in the real world 🤦‍♀️

I didn't mean funny as "what a hilarious thing to happen".

I mean funny as in "a silly accident/mistake". "The silly dog was just wanting to play and didn't burst your ball on purpose!"

Just because something upsetting happened, doesn't mean you need to create a huge bloody drama out of it.

Paperlate · 01/06/2023 15:31

The OP said her children were upset not scared.
