Brexit was a disaster. So why don't people vote Lib Dem?

Now that the people who voted Brexit are realising they were lied to, what is the point of them swinging back to Labour - a party which consistently evaded taking a coherent stance on Brexit for fear of losing certain voters? How are they any better than the Tories on this issue? The Lib Dems were and still are the only party with an anti-Brexit policy. AIBU to think Labour have shown themselves to be just as disingenuous and full of 'career politicians' as the Tories? At least the Lib Dems were honest and straightforward on this issue?

And why do people vote for the Lib Dems and consider it to be an "Anti-Tory" vote? They're an independent party. They aren't just a Labour party side project. They're no more Anti-Tory than they are Anti-Labour.

If you live in a seat where the Lib Dem candidate has the best chance of beating the Tory, you'd be a fool to vote Labour. That might just let the Tory back in again. The UK uses an election system called first-past-the-post, where a candidate who most voters do not want can win by getting more votes than a divided opposition. By voting tactically, you can overcome this problem, by backing the party that has the best chance of defeating the Conservatives where you live. The Labour voters may have to hold their noses and cast their votes where they will do most to destroy the Tories' chance of forming a government.

Cos I have never forgiven Nick Clegg for going back on practically every Lib Dem promise when he went into a coalition with the Torys

This

Hehehejeiej · 31/05/2023 23:06

Austerity was a political decision. Fuck the Lib Dems.

Because they don't know what a woman is.

You are so right. He's a laughing stock and so.is Starmer..
I have another grievance with the Lib Dems and that is the betrayal of the children in this country when student grants were abolished and student loans given instead. Betrayal!

caringcarer · 01/06/2023 00:50

@verdantverdure, I have absolutely no idea. We used to have Christopher Pincher but after sexually assaulting another man he is kicked out of the Conservative party so standing down at the next election. Local elections where I live are no overall control so I guess anything can happen. It makes me so angry that Kier and Ed seem to at least publicly state women can have a penis. It just gives me no confidence whatsoever that women's spaces and races would be protected. If they won't stand up for women then they'll also allow that agenda to be pushed in schools. I won't vote for any of them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/06/2023 00:56

FatCatBum · 31/05/2023 21:38

Well I'm not a Tory (currently very much homeless on the political front) but in answer to your question Rishi Sunak said 100% of women don't have a penis, which is a pretty good start

But that wasn't his start. His start was "a woman is whatever Boris Johnson says".Confused He has apparently changed his mind, but who's to say he won't change his mind again? Woman is a nebulous concept to him.

If it wasn't and if he gave a shit, he'd safeguard women's identity, rights and single sex spaces now. But he won't even try because he doesn't really care/doesn't have the will and doesn't have the backing of his MPs to do so. Despite his substantial majority in the HoC.🤔

At least the Conservatives know what a woman is was a lie created by Tory spin doctors, spread by Tory shills and believed by people with very short memories and little intellegence.🙄

I have three teens who alarmingly, don't seem to know what a woman is either. It's the zeitgeist of cancel culture. But they'll realise soon enough.

6 years of TWAW Ministers of Education will do that.Angry

"You’re part of the problem then. They need to be educated on biology and the multiple disadvantages women experience based on their biology."

A lot of teens / young people won't even entertain the debate. If you dare to question the current prevailing online / social media narrative you are 'transphobic.' That's it. Cancelled! This is where we are at.

Not all teens subscribe to this lunacy. My very sporty Foster son refuses to wear Nike now because he recognises some of his close female friends will lose out in their sports and he agrees with me that if a man cannot compete against other men he should probably stay out of competitive sport rather than barging his way into female sport dressed as a woman. He participates in quite a few competitive sports with one at county level and he said he sees the girls training just as hard as the boys do so they should not have it taken away from them.

Jellycatbat20 · 01/06/2023 01:18

Because they're a bunch of untrustworthy Tory enabling turncoats who sold the ragged remnants of their souls for a sniff of power and a bromance in a rose garden. Until the great Nick'n'Dave show, ideologically Lib Dems had always been closer to Labour. They knew they'd never come so close to power on their own so sold us all down the river. The only way I'd vote for them is if there was no other chance whatsoever to get the Tory out. I'd always make sure I stood with my back to the wall in the presence of a Yellow Tory, just in case I ended up with a knife in it...Clegg has absolutely shown the world who he is since working for Meta.

Besides they're perfectly safe in saying they'll take us back into Europe as they'll never get the chance to do it. And I say that as a remainer who'd love almost nothing more than to have my freedom of movement, food security, and educational opportunities restored....

NumberTheory · 01/06/2023 01:35

Cyril Smith and the way the top of the party clearly covered his abuse of children up. They’ve never properly addressed it and their actions since suggest they still, effectively, run a boys club.
Their stance on women’s rights, especially their support for anonymity for people accused of sexual assault.

How utterly morally bankrupt and incompetent they were in coalition.

PurpleParrots · 01/06/2023 01:38

Because if they don’t know the difference between a man and a women I don’t trust them to carry out ministerial duties in my best interests.

I find it incredulous that anyone could believe a woman has a penis.

Why do you think idiots should run the country OP?

suburbophobe · 01/06/2023 01:44

What is Starmer's position on 'what is a woman' though? What is his view on Brexit? He just sits on the fence. What was Corbyn's view on Brexit for that matter? He was supposedly the leader of the opposition, yet never saw fit to take a stance on the most important vote in a generation. You couldn't make it up. Diabolical. Labour did nothing to prevent Brexit and they are just as bad as the Tories. Still today, they shirk and evade the issue.

Well said.

IamSlave · 01/06/2023 07:08

The eu is currently facing down yet more crises. Why would I want to join in?
Havant we enough of our own without re coupling to theirs also

IamSlave · 01/06/2023 07:10

Any one who understands the far left stance would have understood that was a very natural position for corybn and his cronies. Ie they wanted brexit because remaining in the eu affected British workers pay and rights.

Of course they didn't come out agaisnt it, they politically aligned to brexit.

worldstillturns · 31/05/2023 20:25

"Their leader said last week on LBC that a woman can have a penis."

Is this not also the general view of the Labour Party?

Anyway, everyone knows full well what a woman is, so I tend to take no notice of that.

Ed Davey says that women can clearly have dicks so do you really want him anywhere near power?

Also - a bit odd to vote for a party on the basis that you ignore what its politicians say, no?

He sounds great. So good to hear this.

loislovesstewie · 01/06/2023 07:14

@FasterthanBolt sums it up for me. Clegg just decided that being in power was worth chucking out all of the manifesto. Then he sodded off to a job with Facebook when his constituency voters decided they wanted shot of him. Money, and the chance of power, corrupts.

TinyTopknot · 01/06/2023 07:16

worldstillturns · 31/05/2023 22:43

What did Corbyn do to stop Brexit - particularly in 'Red Wall' constituencies? Absolutely nothing - he was pathetic. His non-committal evasiveness was tantamount to support in my view. Even today, Starmer won't say what he actually thinks.

That's because he is pro-Brexit of course. I thought that this was common knowledge?

ISeeMisledPeople · 01/06/2023 07:20

Two reasons immediately spring to mind.

Alastair Carmichael
Alex Cole-Hamilton

TinyTopknot · 01/06/2023 07:20

Corbyn I meant. God know what Starmer thinks about anything but he is clearly desperate not to upset the hard left.

booksandbrooks · 01/06/2023 07:35

People think the Lib Dem's are centre lefty but their more diet Tories imo.

Will never forgive the coalition fiasco.
The disastrous Royal Mail sell out Vince Cable presided over, tuition fees, women's rights.

Highgate and Hampstead are full of Lib Dem boards. For the families that are too London to be Tory but too self serving elite to vote Labour.

They're a joke.

SquirrelSoShiny · 01/06/2023 08:13

Gingernaut · 31/05/2023 20:26

Because the venal fuckers got into bed with the Tories, pissed all over their own manifesto, facilitated Brexit, are still home to some of the most easily manipulated naïfs in politics and are spearheading the transwomen are women/NO DEBATE/Deadnaming is literal violence shit

This x 1000

OrigamiOwls · 01/06/2023 08:38

Because they screwed me over massively with tuition fees, so I've never been able to afford a degree.
I had been a loyal voter, until the screwed me over with that. I'll never vote for that bunch of turncoats until the day I die.

FelisCatus0 · 01/06/2023 09:08

I think the only way is to not vote at all. Parties will soon have to change their stances on issues ie like gender, if the voter turnout gets lower and lower and they are become desperate to get people especially women, to the booths.
