Brexit was a disaster. So why don't people vote Lib Dem?

Now that the people who voted Brexit are realising they were lied to, what is the point of them swinging back to Labour - a party which consistently evaded taking a coherent stance on Brexit for fear of losing certain voters? How are they any better than the Tories on this issue? The Lib Dems were and still are the only party with an anti-Brexit policy. AIBU to think Labour have shown themselves to be just as disingenuous and full of 'career politicians' as the Tories? At least the Lib Dems were honest and straightforward on this issue?

Because they betrayed everyone who has ever supported them, voted for them or agreed with what they allegedly stand for by jumping into bed with their natural political opponents, the Tories, in 2010. And there are some betrayals which do not get forgiven, or forgotten.

tiggergoesbounce · 31/05/2023 20:50

The Tories do although there will be one or two who don't

Yeah, the tories apparently do know what a woman is, they just openly dont give a shit about us. Thats better apparently.

TheCyclingGorilla · 31/05/2023 20:50

I'm politically homeless. I would love to vote Labour because (long list here) and I can't vote LibDem because of ED's view of what a woman is, not Tory because they are Tory and Greens have royally fucked up in Scotland (They'd been given power and they went wild on it). If Labour made up some good socialist policies and came down on the side of women, minorities and the disabled I might give them a go. Starmer is too Right Wing for me Grin.

Cos I have never forgiven Nick Clegg for going back on practically every Lib Dem promise when he went into a coalition with the Torys

When they went back on their pledge about university fees.
I vowed never to vote for them again. Since then they havent done anything special to make me think they are the ones to vote for.

It would have to be a big change.

PicnicBunny · 31/05/2023 20:52

There is a war on women and children. And they are leading it.

tiggergoesbounce · 31/05/2023 20:52

Im not sure people trust them from their term with the tories. So apparently they wouldnt vote for a party who told them/sold them on one thing and delivered another.

worldstillturns · 31/05/2023 20:54

What is Starmer's position on 'what is a woman' though? What is his view on Brexit? He just sits on the fence. What was Corbyn's view on Brexit for that matter? He was supposedly the leader of the opposition, yet never saw fit to take a stance on the most important vote in a generation. You couldn't make it up. Diabolical. Labour did nothing to prevent Brexit and they are just as bad as the Tories. Still today, they shirk and evade the issue.

Anyway, everyone knows full well what a woman is, so I tend to take no notice of that.

Do you understand the implications of believing men can be women? The Lib Dem’s support Self ID which leads directly to rapists being put in women’s prisons and men being allowed to race one week in the men’s races and the next become Emily and beat all the women. You SHOULD be taking notice if you care about women and girls.

I voted Lib Dem’s for 28 years, I was then called a TERF by a person in-charge of my local Lib Dem party, for having the temerity to ask if they were ok with male rapists in female prisons. They’ve lost my vote forever.

Basically this.

I voted LibDem every year since I could vote... they get a hint of a sniff of anything in the coalition government... and Clegg rolls over and chucks every single promise in the bin.

I ask this from a position of total ignorance - do labour or conservative acknowledge a factual definition of a woman ? Or any of the fringe parties?

Nah, mostly they're all shite on this one. Only half of the parliamentary Conservative Party had grasped it at the start of this year. Previously PM Teresa May introduced Self ID as policy back in 2017. PM Boris Johnson refused to say that only women have a cervix in a TV interview for GB News. PM Sunak, when asked "what is a woman" answered that a woman was whatever Boris Johnson said.🤯 He apparently knows now.🙄

In the meantime:
Gillian Keegan is the latest Sec of State for Education who can't define the word "girl".
The Leader of the Commons is Penny TWAW Mordaunt.

The Com for Women and Equalities is still headed by Caroline TWAW Nokes.

And last year the Tories appointed Jamie Wallis, our 1st trans MP to Women and Equalities. Jamie Wallis believes that he is becoming a woman and has used children not to wait along as he did, before transing.
Conservative MP Crispin Blunt has reported women to the police and their employers for retweeting JKR.

So no party comes out of this smelling of roses, but the Conservatives are the only ones who put it into schools, into a maternity bill and who put male rapists into women's prisons in England.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I voted Lib Dem for the first time in 2010 and as a result helped the Tories get into power. Never again!

Me too!

Never again!

Tinkerbyebye · 31/05/2023 20:58

Ha ha very funny

NutellaNut · 31/05/2023 20:58

I wouldn’t vote LibDem in a million years. Where to start with why not… policies always smack of living in cloud cuckoo land, Nick Clegg abandoning principles which lead to student loans sky rocketing. Oh yes, and they don’t know what a woman is apparently.

Interesting thing happened at the recent council elections in May …my partner and my adult son were sent a personally addressed joint canvassing letter by local LibDems, even though they have different surnames. Was expecting the same letter to myself and my adult daughter, but no, we never got one. Apparently just sent to the men in the house, cos they know best probably.

Because the venal fuckers got into bed with the Tories, pissed all over their own manifesto, facilitated Brexit, are still home to some of the most easily manipulated naïfs in politics and are spearheading the transwomen are women/NO DEBATE/Deadnaming is literal violence shit

I was wondering who to quote and then I saw this.

That's why.

Hayliebells · 31/05/2023 21:00

Even if Labour are very wishy washy on Brexit, they don’t have the loony obsessed with a hard Brexit faction that the Tories do. When Labour are elected, I think they’ll move to a soft Brexit, gradually tightening ties with Europe, and they won’t have the opposition to this is their own party when they’re in government that the Tories currently do. That’s got to be better than this shit show. And the Lib Dem’s aren’t going to have the numbers to form a government, so what’s the point in voting for them? Unless of course you’re in a constituency where the Lib Dem candidate is the best chance of kicking out a Tory, when there’s every point in voting for them.

Garrard · 31/05/2023 21:01

Also true

But still no way for Lib Dem

DismantledKing · 31/05/2023 21:02

I’ve seen what the Lib Dems are like in government, they’d why I don’t vote for them.

LlynTegid · 31/05/2023 21:03

Where I live it is choice of Labour or Tory, no one else has a chance of winning the seat. As it is in many places. So voting Lib Dem is nothing other than a protest vote.

SmugglersHaunt · 31/05/2023 21:05

worldstillturns · 31/05/2023 20:25

"Their leader said last week on LBC that a woman can have a penis."

Is this not also the general view of the Labour Party?

Anyway, everyone knows full well what a woman is, so I tend to take no notice of that.

You may choose to take no notice, but if they or Labour got into power the world demolish the last of women’s sex-based rights. That’s why they should get in the bin.

endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2023 21:07

Because they support the sterilization and mutilation of children. And take huge donations from the company that makes the drugs to do it.

AutumnCrow · 31/05/2023 21:09

Because Jo Swinson was a nutter and Ed Davey is an arsehole.

bigbabycooker · 31/05/2023 21:09

Well, for one thing there is the woman thing.

But also, they just aren't serious grown ups. In the last election they seriously ran on a ticket of promising not to go into coalition with anyone, which is the entire fucking point of the Lib Dem's. They made such a mess of being an opposition party on Brexit, they also opposed TM's proposal on social care for venal reasons related to their delusion that they could somehow get elected as a significant party, which was the best chance to sort out social care for a generation.

The tuition fees mistake was the fact that they made an unfounded promise without any research based on no one ever having to make a difficult decision ever. Typical Lib Dem position!!

The women thing is basically what happens if you live in total denial that there are ever any downsides to any magic policies you decide to pursue. There are always downsides and opportunity costs to every policy - you could always have spent money on something else. If you can't understand the concept of trade offs you will always be a crap politician.
