Or is Mansplaining getting worse?

Filling up my car screen wash on my driveway. No hose or outside tap at the front so I'm using a big watering can.

Random man: you know that's a watering can right? It's for watering plants. You can put a nozzle on the end to make it sprinkle the water out.

Me: Umm. Yes. I do know.

RM: It's not actually for filling up the car.

Me: Yes. I know. I also use it in the garden.

RM: You can use a hose to fill up the car.

Me: I know, but I don't have an outside tap, so I used this to move water from inside my house to outside. Because its a water moving receptacle.

RM: It wasn't made for filling up the car though.

Me: ........

RM: Hurumpf.

And off he wanders.

I mean.... what!?

Interestingly, I never come across any mansplaining at all which seems to be unusual!

I use a big jug to fill the screen wash up. Surely a hose is stupid unless you have a huge screen wash container.

Same here! Never experienced it

PP’s might find this useful (printed out on small ‘business cars’ maybe):

My fave bit of very useful man advice was from a man working in a petrol station - I was buying a token to put in machine to put air in my tyres when he helpfully told me I needed to remove the dust caps to do so 🤦‍♀️

I find "no shit sherlock" comes in useful for such instances

Mygym · 31/05/2023 17:45

The trick here is to act surprised ,look at the watering can and keep a straight face.

WhimHoff · 31/05/2023 17:46

I ranted to DH last week as a horse box was for sale and described as “a ladies lorry”, does it mean the seat is more absorbent to mop up menstrual fluid?

I don't think this is limited to men (although I accept it's probably more prevalent) I have had a lot of incorrect and unhelpful advice from Women over the years, interfering into what I was doing with irrelevant, unhelpful or simply batshit "advice".

Agreed have had this with women. Woman at cafe over lockdown with a counter separating us. “Be careful with your bag and phone won’t you?” Phone was being put back into bag which was crossbody with zip.

Older woman once “be careful with your phone dear” I’d just taken a call whilst in a shop and I don’t need some randoms telling me to be careful!

Agree this can be annoying ut I find the mansplaining is different in that these women would say this stuff to guys too. Where as the men telling you about cars or paint would not say the same to men.

Talkingfrog · 01/06/2023 08:36

Totally missing the point, but I love that you measure the size of the screenwash container in how many wine bottles it takes to fill it.

(We use a milk bottle instead, but don't measure how much)

RightOldMe · 01/06/2023 08:42

He may have been confused. He may have only been trying to help. The right answer was to ignore him like you did afterwards and go about your day.

I'd stop looking for mansplaining or offence or sexism where there's none.

GoodChat · 01/06/2023 08:43

I use the kettle!

But it's interesting that he thinks a hose was created to fill up the screenwash tank in your car Grin

HoisttheMainSail · 01/06/2023 08:49

Yesterday over on Twitter Billy Bragg was mansplaining what lesbianism is and why it is unnatural to a bunch of women, feminists, and lesbians. He got his arse handed to him.

if it wasn’t so homophonic it would have been hilarious.

a water-moving receptacle 😆

When I worked as a progress chaser in an engineering firm I initially got stick for being female but that went away after a bit. However they never let me forget the time I and a group of machinists needed to consult a big drawing together. It was flapping about and hard for all of us to see, so I brightly suggested we find a 'horizontal surface' to put it on. For some reason the word 'bench' didn't occur to me, despite there being plenty all all around. Forever after they'd say 'Hey, Charlie, found that horizontal surface yet?'. I burst out laughing when they made a big sign before my wedding saying 'Good luck on the horizontal surface on Saturday night'.

VWRabbit · 01/06/2023 09:01

This calls for learning his route and routine, and filling up the screen wash tank with an ever increasingly bizarre set of tools every time he walks past.

Monday - catheter bag full of water
Tuesday - hamsters drinking bottle with the sippy spout.
Wednesday- reused Um!Bongo carton (handy bendy straw)
Thursday - a normal bucket of water, but you're transferring the liquid with a pipette.
Friday- treat yourself, spray it in top speed with a pressure washer (borrow one if needs be)
Saturday- egg cup
Sunday -just to fuck with him, buy and use a hose pipe, but only to wash the car.

brunettemic · 01/06/2023 09:03

Honestly just sounds like a weird bloke to me rather than mansplaining. Sort of reminds me of when Ross tried to talk to the pizza delivery girl about gas 😂

VWRabbit · 01/06/2023 09:03

... forgot to add, remain utterly blank in expression and potential response to him. Your screen wash, your pipettes, you're fucking with him, your business! 😁

What a great story 😂

TheOrigRights · 01/06/2023 09:11

I think the vast majority of men would consider this bloke a complete melt i.e. they wouldn't nod along thinking wasn't it great that he was able to explain this difficult concept to you. i.e. NOT mansplaining, just a regular fool.

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 01/06/2023 09:15

Cricket pitch with boundary line being painted:

Me to DD (3): that’s the boundary line followed by basic explanation of cricket rules

Random Man: well done dear, you got it right with a shocked look

Me: errr yes I play for this cricket club…🤨

Justalittlebitduckling · 01/06/2023 09:15

Several people on this thread have said this doesn’t sound like mansplaining, but it was a man explaining something you already know and about which you hadn’t asked for advice. So if this is doesn’t count as mansplaining, then what does? 🤨

Inadvertentlyspring · 01/06/2023 09:20

Well, ladies, I’m a man and there’s one simple thing clearly none of you are getting about these situations, let me outline it for you here in simple steps…

JOKES!!!!

Def not a man don’t come at me

BUT, missing point of thread entirely and clearly needing some womexplanation - I have been filling my screen wash exclusively with that screen wash mix from B&Q/Tesco/wherever. Have I been being scammed for years?!?!

throwaway78 · 01/06/2023 09:21

I've got a terrible crush on someone who randomly mansplained something to me recently, worst part is I still have a crush and it didn't kill it dead 😆

Because I don't think he was being particularly patronising.
He must be of quite low intelligence if he thinks 1) you cannot use something other than a hose to fill a water tank and 2) you can use a watering can for activities other than watering plants.

I can imagine him saying the same to a man.

I think the standard answer in these circumstances is "piss off and mind your own business" 🤬

Exactly - why you would spend time negotiating with the dick is the unreasonable bit for me.

takealettermsjones · 01/06/2023 09:27

I think the thing that crosses it over into mansplaining is when you just know they wouldn't have said it to a fellow man.

I am a martial artist and I once (stupidly) signed up for a run of box fit classes at my leisure centre, just as an additional bit of cardio. Lo and behold I was the only woman there. Over the weeks I had three separate men try to teach me (two of them wrongly) how to make a fist. I said all the "I'm okay thanks, don't need any help," stuff but it didn't stop them, physically grabbing my hands/fingers and "demonstrating" to me. They didn't ask me if I needed help, and they didn't "help" anyone else. I don't go to the class any more 😆

You can use screenwash all year round if you want there's no issue
Often screenwashes include some sort of anti freeze which is necessary in the winter but not in the summer so lots of people just use water for the warmer weather to save money
