If you could live anywhere in Scotland...?

Inspired by the similar thread for England, if you could live anywhere in Scotland where would you live? We are currently in the north of England but I'm originally from Scotland and would love to move back when we retire. Absolutely love the West coast and spent a lot of holidays there. But where should we be considering? Don't mind being a bit remote as long as we are a drive away from a city.

I'd love to stay in a huge sandstone villa in leafy Pollokshields. Such a gorgeous area with wide tree lined streets and some beautiful parks.

We'd be near neighbours then, as you're thinking of the same place as me. Many, many a happy time I've spent there visting friends. And many an hour I've spent on rightmove planning which sandstone property to purchase (in my dreams). One day!

CherryPieface · 25/05/2023 22:28

Another vote for Broughty Ferry.

ShakeYourFeathers · 25/05/2023 22:51

@TheShellBeach no I'm not the Duke of Argyll. Stunning castle though. I live about as far away as you can get from Inveraray but still be in Britain. Went once on holiday to the Highlands and thought it was such a beautiful part of the world

Beeswood · 25/05/2023 22:53

Perth/Perthshire, love it there.

I live in Forfar - one of the towns that make up Angus. I'm just a 20 minute drive from Dundee and an hour's drive from Aberdeen.
Angus is lovely and rural (lots of lovely countryside and views of the hills - beautiful in the summer) but plenty to do in the towns that make it up (Forfar, Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie and Montrose).

You can also hop on the train at Arbroath or Montrose to get to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen).
I lived in Montrose for 2 years as well and loved it there too (sometimes think about moving back there) - lovely seaside views.

Hello fellow Forfarian! I like it a lot here too. Friendly, small town feel but not too far from Dundee. Plus we have the scenery, the coast not too far, the hills... And Forfar has all the shops and everyday amenities you need really. It's lovely here (in summer! 😉). I think Angus is very underrated generally.

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening Steampunk Coffee is nice too, and on a Friday from 4 - 7pm they do a Pizza night upstairs with a DJ. Nice pizza, BYOB.

KeepSmiling89 · 25/05/2023 23:13

@LouReidPark amazing! Never thought I'd meet a fellow forfarian on here 😃

KeepSmiling89 · 25/05/2023 23:14

@LouReidPark also want to say, in response to your username, I love taking my wee 18 month old on walks round the Reid Park 😊

LouReidPark · 25/05/2023 23:15

Me neither! ☺️

Thanks, it'll just be a few hours in the morning before going to Edinburgh for Harry Styles but I can come back for a longer visit another time.

It's lovely there isn't it! I'm up there pretty much every day with my dog (and kids too if they can be arsed to come along). The blossom trees were extra lovely this year.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/05/2023 23:25

Pretty happy in the south side of Edinburgh. All the benefits of the city with coast and country a hop skip and a jump away. When retirement comes around, I want plenty amenities around me.

But I'd move back to London in a heartbeat. And I'd love better weather!

pinkpeoniesmakemesmile · 25/05/2023 23:41

I've lived in several places in Scotland (Perthshire, Aberdeenshire & East Lothian) but now in England for work. If I could move tomorrow (which I would jump at the chance to do), I think it would be to go back to North Berwick area.

Perth, Crieff or Comrie (realistically)
Somewhere remote on the 500 (in my dreams)

Snap!

I've always wanted to live in Alness.

Currently living in Argyll.

@TheShellBeach why Alness? Not a place I thought I'd see pop up so specifically.

vdbfamily · 26/05/2023 06:53

We live in South of England and want to retire to Dunbar❤️

WoofWoofBeachLife · 26/05/2023 07:17

We are in a little village in South Ayrshire, just 10 minutes drive to beaches, I go nearly everyday. Its absolute bliss. We are so lucky with beautiful walks and history here, and it's only 40 mins from Glasgow. There's a great public transport system with buses and trains. The town centre of Ayr itself is an embarrassment but that the councils fault. Prestwick is a beautiful little town though, nice independent shops, I've lived there a few years ago.

I was born is Airdrie, the only good thing is the road out, hate it and would never return.

I live in my perfect spot in Scotland. I live in St Andrews and would not want to be anywhere else.

Oh! How I envy you! My favourite part of Scotland (although my heart lies in St Monans, all my childhood memories are there!)

GetDownkeith · 26/05/2023 06:32

@TheShellBeach why Alness? Not a place I thought I'd see pop up so specifically.

Near Inverness, has a railway station, on the beach, good supermarkets, not far to the Struie, quite close to Brora and Helmsdale, on the side of Scotland which doesn't get all the rain, childhood memories.

A lot of those reasons are important because they're the opposite to where I currently live. I love Argyll we're 60 miles from a railway station. And it rains all the time. And getting shopping is a pain.

Oh, I want to move to Alness now!

Belindabelle · 25/05/2023 22:08

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening Make sure you call into the Bostock Bakery.

I am lucky enough to have a home in the East Neuk but North Berwick was a contender.

So many lovely places in Scotland. I love the Dornoch and Brora area too.

My mother was born in Brora.

Whisper23 · 25/05/2023 21:35

Yeah we ruled out Applecross for that reason. Scary road.

Oh yes.

THAT road.

Glitterblue · 26/05/2023 08:21

I’d love to live in St Andrews, I did my degree there, we got married there a few years later and I just feel so safe and happy there.

Fraudornot · 26/05/2023 08:22

@WoofWoofBeachLife ive always had a soft spot for the Ayrshire coast. I think Alloway area looks nice although have heard Ayr is pretty dire.
