If you could live anywhere in Scotland...?

Inspired by the similar thread for England, if you could live anywhere in Scotland where would you live? We are currently in the north of England but I'm originally from Scotland and would love to move back when we retire. Absolutely love the West coast and spent a lot of holidays there. But where should we be considering? Don't mind being a bit remote as long as we are a drive away from a city.

We live in rural Dumfries and Galloway. It's perfect. I'm English and have lived all over the place but no where beats here 🥰

queenatom · 25/05/2023 14:42

Edinburgh, 100%. Morningside or Stockbridge please. Did 10 years in the city and I still miss it a decade later - very settled where we are but I work a lot with the part of my team based in Edinburgh and every now and then I'm tempted to see if my husband is up for a big move...

I came here to say exactly this, hi neighbour!

Ditto !!

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/05/2023 14:42

Swimming - neoprene gloves and boots help massively.

Buddythecat1 · 25/05/2023 14:43

Would love west Lothian. I live in the Highlands currently and hate it

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/05/2023 14:47

@Buddythecat1 why oh why?! Highlands to West Lothian? What’s the draw?

bellylaughter · 25/05/2023 14:51

Dumfries and Galloway.

We are in South Lanarkshire, near Biggar. 45 mins from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Biggar is a great wee town and Lanark is under-rated as well. The only thing missing are decent trains links to Edinburgh.

Hello neighbour!

Fort Augustus

GingerPigz · 25/05/2023 15:10

This thread is making me want to visit Scotland more than ever. I've been to Airdrie for a night for a wedding and that's it.

Airdrie gives you a fairly authentic view of real Scotland 😂

albapunk · 25/05/2023 15:29

I live in Broughty Ferry, it's a brilliant place to live, Dundee is a pretty cool city, and the links to other cities are great! I'm also in the cairngorms national park on an hour, which suits our outdoorsy life. I'm orginally from the West Coast though.

Eventually we will probably settle somewhere like Ballater in the East Highlands, Fort William or Aviemore area.

LaMariposa · 25/05/2023 15:35

I’d love to live near Lunan Bay. Grandparents and uncle are in Arbroath, Aunt in Dumfries and Galloway. We are settled down south though, so I’ll have to make do with fantasy Rightmove browsing and regular holidays.

Groovee · 25/05/2023 15:41

I’d live in Coldingham in an instant. It’s my happy place.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 25/05/2023 15:52

@Buddythecat1 I live in West Lothian, but ideally would live in Islay or Jura

Verv · 25/05/2023 16:02

Im from Edinburgh but love the Cairngorms. I think they're my favourite place on earth. Snow and log cabins in winter, gorgeous silver birch lined roads in summer with crystal clear streams. Bliss.
Id move to ballater or braemar in a second.

Elle200 · 25/05/2023 16:05

In a word, Moray.

Come and see for yourself.

Love Islay!

Tarkan · 25/05/2023 16:14

I'm in Arbroath and love it here. I can see both the abbey and the sea from my street. Dundee and Aberdeen are easy for day trips and Edinburgh and Glasgow aren't too far for going to shows/gigs etc (although unless it's a matinee performance we tend to have to stay over). We're on the east coast mainline so even going down to somewhere like York or London isn't too bad (last time I went to London we did it as a sort of day trip using the sleeper train down and back so we didn't have to stay overnight in London).

I'm originally from Glasgow, moved here in childhood, and I do miss some of the stuff from the city like museums etc, but every time I go down and see the price of wine in the pubs etc I'm glad I don't live there now. 🤣

I live in my perfect spot in Scotland. I live in St Andrews and would not want to be anywhere else.

I’m envious. Loved St Andrews when I visited during a very cold winter. Drove from Edinburgh and the journey was just beautiful.

2bazookas · 25/05/2023 16:30

The Black Isle. (not an island). Beautiful scenery, great climate, lovely little villages (Fortrose, Cromarty.Beauly) ; the coast; great schools, easy access to Inverness (The Highland capital). Great arts scene, coastal rowing, wildlife. easy access to skiing, mountains

whitebreadjamsandwich · 25/05/2023 16:34

Royal Deeside, or Moray/Nairn for the beautiful beaches

2bazookas · 25/05/2023 16:37

TheSproutOfWrath · 25/05/2023 13:48

Berneray on the Outer Hebrides.

I'd recommend avoiding any move to the islands; Calmac ferry services are on their last legs and having a devastating effect on island life, economy, social infrastructure.

XelaM · 25/05/2023 14:37

Those of you who live by Scottish beaches- is it ever not too cold to swim?

Locals swim all year round, including Christmas day.
