If you could live anywhere in Scotland...?

Inspired by the similar thread for England, if you could live anywhere in Scotland where would you live? We are currently in the north of England but I'm originally from Scotland and would love to move back when we retire. Absolutely love the West coast and spent a lot of holidays there. But where should we be considering? Don't mind being a bit remote as long as we are a drive away from a city.

We are in South Lanarkshire, near Biggar. 45 mins from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Biggar is a great wee town and Lanark is under-rated as well. The only thing missing are decent trains links to Edinburgh.

And so close to one of my favourite places, Tinto Hill which thankfully isn't too far from me.

There are so many lovely places just a short drive to bigger cities. One of my favourite cities is Inverness, I also love Skye and most of the west coast. Settling for good, I'd personally avoid places that attract too many tourists though, but that would just be my personal preference.

Orkney or Shetland.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 25/05/2023 13:14

Right where I am, overlooking the river in Broughty Ferry

Nairnshire or Moray.

If you find the right spot, you can get views of both the Cairngorms and the Moray Firth. The beaches are glorious. There's plenty of rural space whilst still being close to towns and cities.

And you don't get the rain or midgies of the west.

Currently in East Lothian - six minute train to the centre of Edinburgh, beach on the doorstep and a ten minute drive to the countryside. It’s idyllic.

I would also live in the borders or Perthshire

bendy75 · 25/05/2023 13:20

Strontian or Ullapool or anywhere close to either would do me, beautiful parts of the world.

Adventureplease · 25/05/2023 13:21

I grew up in North Berwick. It’s a really lovely town with a lot to offer and a train to Edinburgh. It is not cheap though.

BonnieGlasses · 25/05/2023 13:21

On the Aberdeenshire or Angus coast.

We're in Perth and Kinross, and it's absolutely perfect for us, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else. I often dream of moving over west, maybe to the islands, but I think it'd be too isolated. We're rural here but in easy reach of everything.

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/05/2023 13:25

Those saying Orkney or Shetland - not in the winter you wouldn’t!

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/05/2023 13:26

I love the far north west, Gairloch/Ullapool/Torridon but only for 6 months of the year!

Cece92 · 25/05/2023 13:30

I stay in a village In West Lothian which is smack bang in the middle of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Ideal for that and I do like staying in a village but I'd move back to Livingston which is more of a town in a heartbeat. After moaning going from village to a town I moved back to my home village and now want to move back to the town 😂

NetballHoop · 25/05/2023 13:32

I'd like a Summer house in Durness but I would selfishly like to ban all tourists (they can come in the winter if they like).

I'd walk the coast and maybe learn to surf. Then once the spaceport near Tongue is built, I'll watch lift offs galore.

Kam610 · 25/05/2023 13:33

I live in Aberdeenshire but I love the Inverness area and also Aviemore.

KeepSmiling89 · 25/05/2023 13:40

I live in Forfar - one of the towns that make up Angus. I'm just a 20 minute drive from Dundee and an hour's drive from Aberdeen.
Angus is lovely and rural (lots of lovely countryside and views of the hills - beautiful in the summer) but plenty to do in the towns that make it up (Forfar, Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie and Montrose).

You can also hop on the train at Arbroath or Montrose to get to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen).
I lived in Montrose for 2 years as well and loved it there too (sometimes think about moving back there) - lovely seaside views.

Dalgety Bay. Small modern town with 3 lovely independent restaurants, bars nearby, 5 beaches, close to everything you need (and I mean everything - swimming, all major restaurants, ten pin bowling, lawn bowling, swimming, cinema) and only 25 minutes on the train in to the heart of Edinburgh. I am currently looking out of my window at the Forth Rail Bridge, and the very sparkly sea. I can see the Cruise ships moored up in Edinburgh, some days. It's very sunny and warm here today. We have a very small community feel, with Gala days, arranged walks, gin tasting events at the sailing club, lots of events at the bowls club. Very close to the main motorways, if you need to travel up North or down South.

Calmdown14 · 25/05/2023 13:43

@KeepSmiling89 Angus is much underrated - and houses are still pretty affordable too.

Love Lunan bay

Fandabedodgy · 25/05/2023 13:45

I'd love a house on the coast of the Forth with huge windows overlooking the river.

KeepSmiling89 · 25/05/2023 13:46

@MrsAnonstrikesagain I used to work in Dalgety Bay for 4 years! Lovely town - fab links to Dunfermline as well!

This thread is making me want to visit Scotland more than ever. I've been to Airdrie for a night for a wedding and that's it.

In the Tudor? Airdrie classic 🤣

I’d either want Isle of Skye or somewhere on the north coast near Achmelvich/clashnessie etc for all the beautiful beaches

Oh Wow! We love it here. Been here 10 years now. Yes, Dunfermline has everything you need. And only a stones throw up the road. I like being by the sea!

Berneray on the Outer Hebrides.
