If you could live anywhere in Scotland...?

Inspired by the similar thread for England, if you could live anywhere in Scotland where would you live? We are currently in the north of England but I'm originally from Scotland and would love to move back when we retire. Absolutely love the West coast and spent a lot of holidays there. But where should we be considering? Don't mind being a bit remote as long as we are a drive away from a city.

I live in Broughty Ferry, it's a brilliant place to live, Dundee is a pretty cool city, and the links to other cities are great! I'm also in the cairngorms national park on an hour, which suits our outdoorsy life. I'm orginally from the West Coast though.

Eventually we will probably settle somewhere like Ballater in the East Highlands, Fort William or Aviemore area.

Hey neighbour!😂

@GneissGuysFinishLast 😁 I saw very little of Airdrie. A guest house, a church, a house, and a village hall kind of place. Good memories of he piper at the wedding!

I'd recommend avoiding any move to the islands; Calmac ferry services are on their last legs and having a devastating effect on island life, economy, social infrastructure.

That’s exactly what would put me off. The ferry situation is awful, really hope that improves for you.

Dalgety Bay. Small modern town with 3 lovely independent restaurants, bars nearby, 5 beaches, close to everything you need (and I mean everything - swimming, all major restaurants, ten pin bowling, lawn bowling, swimming, cinema) and only 25 minutes on the train in to the heart of Edinburgh. I am currently looking out of my window at the Forth Rail Bridge, and the very sparkly sea. I can see the Cruise ships moored up in Edinburgh, some days. It's very sunny and warm here today. We have a very small community feel, with Gala days, arranged walks, gin tasting events at the sailing club, lots of events at the bowls club. Very close to the main motorways, if you need to travel up North or down South.

Hi Neighbour!

Stirling

it's my happy place

Me too.

My most favourite place not just in the UK, but the world. I miss it so much 💛

ssd · 25/05/2023 19:02

Crail, or Cellardyke, by the sea

This thread is making me want to visit Scotland more than ever. I've been to Airdrie for a night for a wedding and that's it.

Oh jesus. Honestly it gets better Grin

Sounds like you completed airdrie to be honest. Except the Wetherspoons obviously.

I mean … it depends what you value I guess 😂 if you want an immersive experience of central Scottish culture, then it’s probably quite a good shout.

In the Tudor? Airdrie classic 🤣

I’d either want Isle of Skye or somewhere on the north coast near Achmelvich/clashnessie etc for all the beautiful beaches

Or the workman’s/moyhall workman’s club😂

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 25/05/2023 19:12

Sorry that’s should have said Airdrieworkman’s/moyhall workman’s club.

Mull.
Def Mull..

Why?

I ask because I was going to post 'Mull', too.

countvoncount · 25/05/2023 19:21

Callander, in a little pink hoose

Beaverbridge · 25/05/2023 19:22

West end Glasgow, or Dumfries and Galloway. Beautiful down there.

DramaticBananas · 25/05/2023 19:25

South side of Glasgow. In one of those beautiful sandstone tenements or villas. Near to amazing parks and open spaces and museums and within a short bus ride to the city centre. The only downside is that the City fathers in times past decided to put the M8 motorway through the heart of it! So long as you're out of earshot of it, it does it for me.

Dunnoburt · 25/05/2023 19:30

Isle of Mull. GORGEOUS

professionalnomad · 25/05/2023 19:32

I'm from Fife and I love the area
We love Newport-On-Tay and are constantly on the lookout for a property in the area. Love being able to cycle to Dundee and being near my mum (Cupar) but fara enough she can't pop in when she feels like :)

Hiddendoor · 25/05/2023 20:03

I love Cromarty and North Berwick. I want to be able to walk to the sea for a swim!

City wise I'd go back to Edinburgh, Stockbridge or Morningside. If I'm in the city I want to feel it so sign me up for tenement living (in a naice place though)

Owl23 · 25/05/2023 20:11

Borders (east) beautiful countryside, not too far from Edinburgh and nearish East Coast line for access north or south.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/05/2023 20:13

For facilities I would live either on the outskirts of Glasgow or Edinburgh, but for views it would be Mull. I'm English and married to a Scot who is from the former and has family on Mull too. We've been to Mull in the depths of winter and it's so quiet.

The Black Isle. (not an island). Beautiful scenery, great climate, lovely little villages (Fortrose, Cromarty.Beauly) ; the coast; great schools, easy access to Inverness (The Highland capital). Great arts scene, coastal rowing, wildlife. easy access to skiing, mountains

The Black Isle is beautiful, I’d love to live there.

St Andrews.., or The East Neuk ❤️

You beat me to that. Totally agree

RoseLee04 · 25/05/2023 20:30

I grew up in London but have Scottish roots. Since student and working years I have lived in At Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Also visited my grandmother for years in the Borders which have an other worldly quality but too agricultural/rural for my personal taste. For me the easiest comparison is between Glasgow and Edinburgh as the 2 major cultural cities. I wouldn't wish to live in Edinburgh as found it quite a cold and stuffy place (people tend to be quite aloof and less friendly to outsiders). Glasgow is a very unique place, full of surprising finds and paradoxes, and I was quite happy living in the West End bubble. But that's the thing about Glasgow, I could only ever see myself comfortably existing in that bubble. As many have pointed out, there are so many nice surrounding areas or in between places if you don't wish to live in the city. I don't think I would want to permanently live in Scotland again as for me it lacked cultural and professional diversity and choice. But I can see it appeals to people who love a more tranquil 'quality of life'.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 25/05/2023 20:31

I live in the west of Scotland, but if I could move, I'd live in North Berwick, as I love the NE coast.

DieSchottin93 · 25/05/2023 20:32

I've visited Kelso a few times and really liked it, they have almost everything - except a train station 😂
