If you could live anywhere in Scotland...?

Inspired by the similar thread for England, if you could live anywhere in Scotland where would you live? We are currently in the north of England but I'm originally from Scotland and would love to move back when we retire. Absolutely love the West coast and spent a lot of holidays there. But where should we be considering? Don't mind being a bit remote as long as we are a drive away from a city.

Ardrossan or Brodick.

Ardrossan is not a place I expected to see on here! Having said that, it's a good number of years since I lived there, so hopefully it has improved a lot since then.

I don't know if I have one answer to this. I probably wouldn't live in the Western or Northern islands (been there, done that) or Aberdeen. I think I would be fairly happy in most other places. Maybe not Ardrossan though... 😂

I am in west Aberdeenshire and have very easy access to hills and mountains, and about an hour to sandy beaches. It’s a pleasant place to be, especially as we don’t get the midges of the West coast, and although the winters can be brutal, days like today (21c in the garden) are lovely.

That said, I would happily retire to Stockbridge in Edinburgh, just for the cafe culture. As long as I can escape now and then.

I’m in Fife although not born here but would move to East Lothian/Borders area in a heartbeat. Somewhere between Dunbar and Eyemouth area. My parents were from there and my lovely DF is buried there. The minute I go down there I get an overwhelming feeling of peace and like I’m home. Hopefully some day

NW highlands, Coigach or Assynt.

Yep I'm trying to persuade DH we could extend it a bit to suit our needs... Not getting anywhere with him 😭

Deeside. Absolutely beautiful. And the Queen thought so too!

SimonsCow · 25/05/2023 14:17

Dunblane. Lovely little place. Beautiful and super close to Stirling by car/train and Glasgow is only 20 mins away on a (very frequent) train route. Perfect.

East Neuk of Fife.
Moray coast.

Perthshire where I do actually live! ❤️

I’m where I want to be. East Lothian, right on the beach. However the town I live in is one of the most expensive towns to live in in the whole of the Uk. Half hour train ride to Edinburgh. We have it all, great shops, small town feel, great restaurants, stunning beaches. Only thing is it’s a tourist town, and the Infrastructure cannot really cope with it being one.

Hello North Berwick person 😂

We’re also East Lothian and love it, but in the future we’re hoping to move to one of the isles or at least a more remote location.
Perhaps Plockton, Skye, Uist, Bernaray Lewis or Harris.

Galloway, Cornwall without the tourists - lovely towns, quaint beachfront villages, huge expanses of beach with no-one on them. Apparently they're recruiting for NHS staff in the area so I know what work to go in to if we do decide to move.

I live in my perfect spot in Scotland. I live in St Andrews and would not want to be anywhere else.

I came here to say exactly this, hi neighbour!

Wittyname10 · 25/05/2023 14:32

We are - Thankerton!

My wife goes up regularly, I've only managed it the once since moving here in 2020! Must go more!

Whisper23 · 25/05/2023 14:33

Where I am now, off the beaten track part of Skye, overlooking a sea loch. Paradise for me.

And so close to one of my favourite places, Tinto Hill which thankfully isn't too far from me.

There are so many lovely places just a short drive to bigger cities. One of my favourite cities is Inverness, I also love Skye and most of the west coast. Settling for good, I'd personally avoid places that attract too many tourists though, but that would just be my personal preference.

XelaM · 25/05/2023 14:37

Those of you who live by Scottish beaches- is it ever not too cold to swim?

NameChangedAdInfinitum · 25/05/2023 14:38

You should go more @Wittyname10 if you like that kind of thing. I love it, just not during the busy times!

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 25/05/2023 14:38

Stockbridge in Edinburgh or beach front in North Berwick - north west is fabulous (somewhere like Gairloch or Torriden) but I really like being around lots of people

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 25/05/2023 14:39

@XelaM I’m not far from a city beach in Edinburgh and people swim here (in swimsuits, not we suits) all year round but it’s too cold for me!

Not really. But there are some great Wild Swimming groups. You get used to the chilly waters 😂
