To not understand what Philip Scofield did wrong?

I’m not a fan of Phil or Holly and have never watched This Morning. However, I’ve read about the issues the show has been facing in the news recently and am at a loss to understand why Phil had to step down. What did he actually do wrong?

I know his brother has been imprisoned for a heinous crime but obviously that’s nothing to do with Phil. So I don’t understand why he decided to resign.

Some people may not believe it's true, not sure I do, but I am going by the facts and 16 is as bad as 15 or 14 if you have a moral compass.

I don't know what's true, like you I can only read, what's reported by the papers.
Moral compass or not, the legal age of consent is 16. Its an individual choice whether you cut off a family member because of the age of there partner. I think there is a lot more too it.

If you read the transcripts of the case I think you wouldn't have much doubt that PS knew how old the boy was and the circumstances around the abuse.

I've looked for them previously but all I get is newspaper stories even when I specify court transcripts.
Do you have a link?

I agree with you there. It is an individual choice, and his individual choice means a lot of people don't like him because we consider 16 to be barely the age of consent. I might be wrong, but I would hazard a guess the age of consent is so sexually active 16 years aren't charged with an offence for having sex with other teenagers when they have reached puberty. Doubt the reason was for middle aged men. This is a reason children are in care until 18, and can't (not sure if this has changed) get married without parents permission until 18, as they are vulnerable.

Focusing solely on legislation does not change the fact most people think it's abhorrent. It wasn't a 16 year old and a 22 year old (which a lot would still disagree with), it's a middle aged man taking advantage of a teenager. That goes for both of them. PS just won't get charged because, as you say, the legal age of consent is 16. Lucky him.

Both Phil and Hol are a pair of wrong 'uns.,, for all the reasons stated above but I was massively turned off the pair of them for the blatant bias demonstrated in the general election. They hectored the leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, and then cosied up with Boris Johnson taking selfies. Manipulative, fame hungry, sycophants the pair of them.

Exactly. I could never stand PS or HW, never could understand their appeal or how they got these jobs, but the horrible behaviour to JC, vs fawning over the vile BJ made them irredeemable to me.

It’s perfectly legal to have an affair. To emotionally abuse your partner. To bully people. And yes, to embark on a relationship with a 16YO when you’re in your 60s. But they’re all kind of frowned upon by society.

So don’t be surprised when people do exactly that.

Apparently he’s still gonna be working for ITV - just not on This Morning!

Give it a couple of weeks. Scofe is TV history.

slore · 21/05/2023 02:11

As far as I can tell, rumour is that Philth has a preference for barely legal very young men. One was apparently groomed, probably with the promise of breaking into TV.

Rumour is that Scofield especially and Willoughby are horrible behind the scenes, and they've clearly upset many lowlier ranking celebrities in their reign at the top of ITV, hence all the cryptic tweets from celebs.

It shows how ruthless and fake Holly is that she has just thrown him under the bus now that his presence is too damaging for her. She knew what he was like and didn't mind being friends with him when it benefitted her.

TommyNever · 21/05/2023 02:18

Get a grip please people, Telly Land isn't real life. "Phil & Holly" are celebs playing a role for the cameras.

What they're really like is anyone's guess (and of no real interest) and what the gossip columns say is unlikely to be trustworthy.

Well, clearly it is of real interest to very many people. Like it or not.

It isn't about them playing a role on TV. It's about court transcripts and written reports, neither of which have anything to do with presenting.

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2023 06:16

the boy was 16 so PS was told
should he have gone to the police on his brother?
would you go to the police?
either way i guess he knew it was his downfall

contrary13 · 21/05/2023 06:38

Holly has a 14 year old son, who may well have spent time in the company of Timothy Schofield, given how close she and his brother were. Philip's unease when she wished her son a happy birthday in the last fortnight may have been somewhat telling as there probably has been a "what if it were H that your brother sexually abused - would you have turned a blind eye then?!" conversation between them over the past couple of months.

londonrach · 21/05/2023 06:53

Both holly and Phil come out of this badly..even since the queue to see the queen

Jifmicroliquid · 21/05/2023 06:57

PS originally said he had no idea didn’t he? Then it came out that he did indeed know.

QuintanaRoo · 21/05/2023 07:07

Even if everything PS has done is legal. Even if the runner was 16yo, even if we ignore the fact it sounds like he was groomed while under 16, even if it’s true him brother told him the boy he was involved in was 16yo……it’s all very grubby.

For tv companies it’s all about ratings and the audience will turn off if they don’t like presenters. PS has obviously gone into that area of turning the audience off. And people are allowed to have that opinion. They did it for Ellen because she was accused of being a bitch and a bully and PS has those accusations about him so even without quibbling about whether certain boys were 16yo or not he’s done enough for people not to like him.

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2023 07:16

agree, for the tv show it is about the ratings and a squeaky clean image

Why the Holly hate.. as far as I can tell she hasn't been grooming youngsters or covering for relatives who have since been found guilty of sexual abuse of children..

But that’s the point if the rumours are true she has turned a blind eye.

The show will remain tainted if Holly stays on. It will be hard to separate one from the other as the rumours rightly or wrongly indicate that both were unpleasant off camera. Their co-hosts were decidedly frosty and hinted at this.

I think ITV need to have a big shake up because I stopped watching years back. BBC have a better offering on in the morning, not great, but investigative with a variety of presenters also sometimes unintentionally hilarious. The format is tired, Holly is tainted but they will still think the viewers want to see her with someone else like Alison Hammond. ITV needs to stop being lazy and uninspiring, do the right thing and make a clean sweep if you want viewers back.

a relationship with a teenager doesnt make you a paedophile

Sorry, but when you’re 61, it actually does.

If people perceive you to be a paedophile, then - news flash: you’re a paedophile. 🤷🏻‍♀️
