Dominic Raab is a solicitor too.

I'm pretty sure Dominic Raab also understands how laws are made, even if he didn't understand the significance of the Port of Dover.

This is all very hypothetical though, isn't it? There's absolutely nothing to suggest that any of these things is likely to happen, which is why I am more worried about things that are likely to happen because the party which will almost certainly form the next government has said they will do them.

I thought you were most concerned about the people who have power. Right now it's the Tory party in government, with the power. No one knows who will come next.

It's a Mumsnet first for me.

Do you think the Tories (a) plan to introduce a new bill banning abortion within this parliament, (b) can get a majority of votes across Parliament in favour of that, (c) can get it through the House of Lords and secure Royal Assent before the end of 2024, which is the latest date the general election can be held, and (d) don't care about winning the election?

And if you seriously think the answer to those four questions is yes, do you think Labour will not just abolish that law as soon as they get into power?

I think the Tories banning abortion would just about guarantee the biggest Labour majority there has ever been, don't you?

cakeorwine · 17/05/2023 20:35

If someone had said a few years ago that the police would preemptively arrest people who hadn't protested but were going to attend a peaceful protest and they were arrested because they had things that the police thought could be used for locking on, and they would be held for 16 hours, I think people would be surprised.

But that's the law that's been passed.

It's amazing how a country can change.

I think it will be interesting after the next election and what happens to the Conservative party if they lose.

And what direction they go, and who leads them.

Well if what you fear comes to pass, you're welcome to say "I told you so".

What I fear will almost certainly come to pass because it is an actual Labour policy, and they will either win a majority or form a coalition with other parties who also have the same policy.

DuncinToffee · 17/05/2023 20:37

And who would have thought breaking international law was fine

More than that, that the police might arrest someone because they happened to stand near someone who might protest at a later date...

Meanwhile the same people who introducted that marvellous bit of legislation also voted in favour of allowing being to harass those attending abortion clinics.

Interesting in what sense? Academically? They won't be in power.

Self ID. Aka legislating women out of legal existence.

Interesting to see what happens to the Tory party

Sunak will go. Who will replace him and what direction will they go?

ToWhitToWhoo · 17/05/2023 20:42

I can't see a realistic route to banning abortion in the UK, for example.

Until very recently, it was largely banned in one part of the UK: Northern Irelland.

I can't see how it will be of any immediate relevance unless Labour are so dire they only last one term.

Or that a party would make voting more difficult for citizens to increase their chance of winning.
Or
That the party in power would lie to the Queen and Parliament.
Or
That putting rapists into women's prisons was acceptable. And schoolgirls should budge up and wait while natal boys use their facilities because of their spesh feelz.
Or
That we should swap failed asylum seekers for people Rwanda don't want.

But that's the Tories for you. Fucking loons, you just never know what they'll do next.🤯

When Priti Patel said socialists want to see Britain forced back into the UK was she making some kind of strange point about the status of Northern Ireland?

Please please please don't tell me you're about to deny that this is Labour policy despite the fact that they have confirmed many times that it is, because the manifesto hasn't been published yet.

If you're concerned about that third one then I have some bad news for you about Labour. They don't think the Tories have gone far enough.

Notonthestairs · 17/05/2023 20:46

Hang on of course it will be interesting to see what the Conservatives do out of power!

According to an earlier poster they'll be back within a decade. How they reframe themselves will have an impact on what the media chooses to publish for one thing.

No point having right wing non dom billionaire media owners & donors and not give them something to get their teeth in to!

Personally I'd like to see the One Nationers take control but I'm not sure how many are left.

It's no longer banned, but you still can't get one. Legal doesn't mean available.
