How can anybody who has studied any history whatsoever vote for this?

Are living in some kind of shit, TV movie about the fall of the UK?

The Lib Dems, the National Health Action Party and the Greens (in the European Parliament elections).

I take it that women's rights to single sex spaces has only recently become a red line to you then? What's the National Health Action Party stance?

MargotBamborough · 17/05/2023 20:06

IClaudine · 17/05/2023 20:01

Ideas/ideals are powerful. They can become policy. Brexit started as an idea in the heads of a few politicians. Look at us now.

All the same, I'm more worried about self ID which I actually think will happen within the next three years, and which I don't think can really be reversed once it has happened.

Other, more distant possibilities which are still only ideals and not actual policies of the next party of government are less of an immediate threat.

For what it's worth, I do think policies like self ID and rolling back abortion rights go hand in hand. It won't be the same people who try to do these things, of course. But as we have seen from the US, politicians (and feminists) are very bad at protecting the rights of a group of people they refuse to even name, or acknowledge exists.

I have a book all about how laws are made on the Uk on a shelf, would you like me to send it to you?

Margot is worried about gender ideology becoming law, but we're not allowed to worry about other forms of ideology becoming law. Have I got that right?

Unfortunately they are no longer standing.

But the candidate I voted for is strong on women's rights.

The point I'm making is that I'm more worried about things I think are actually likely to become law. I would have thought that was obvious.

I can't see a realistic route to banning abortion in the UK, for example.

So not like the NatCs and Tories who are strong on removing women's rights.

Just because you can't see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Your contributions on this thread are testament to that.🤣

TheHandmaiden · 17/05/2023 20:10

I don't like self ID either! However, even assuming the Labour Party get in, and they want it, they would have a much harder time of it in making any change if the current government made the changes now. I would like to see it!

So, to be clear.

You think it is likely that the five MPs who attended this conference plan to ban abortion in the UK, and can garner enough support to get the necessary votes in parliament to transform the UK from having the most liberal abortion rights in Europe, to having the most restrictive ones.

And that this will get through the House of Lords and make it onto the statute books.

Can you clarify whether you think this will happen before the general election, or after Labour, who aren't even in power yet, are out of power? If the former, presumably Labour would just overturn it, right?

Why are you ignoring the other Tory MPs who attended the NatC event and the Tory Peers?

Which 5 MPs are we focussing on?

Are you going to explain how you think this hypothetical abortion ban will make it on to the statute books or not?

Feel free to consult that book of yours.

Do you want the book, you'll then learn how laws are made in the UK.

Maybe not banning abortion out right but they can make it harder to access it or make it harder to get hold of things like the morning after pill, contraception, sex education etc.

It can happen even if you don't like/want to see it.

No, I don't want the book. I'm a qualified solicitor and I know how laws are made in the UK, thanks.

Also, please stop sending me private messages asking me where I want you to send the book, because that is really weird behaviour.

This is all very hypothetical though, isn't it? There's absolutely nothing to suggest that any of these things is likely to happen, which is why I am more worried about things that are likely to happen because the party which will almost certainly form the next government has said they will do them.

I'm not asking you how laws are made.

I'm asking you to explain the process by which you think this particular law will get made, knowing all the hurdles anyone introducing it will need to overcome. Such as the fact that no one wants it.
