I make my partner sandwiches to take to the office most weekdays.

I do this in the evening then put them in the fridge for him to take in the morning.

If he decides to work from home instead, he still eats the sandwiches, despite lots of other options instead - eggs on toast, salad, quiche etc we have in the house.

This annoys me as it seems so lazy and I have sandwiches to make again for the next day. He could save the ones I made for the following day.

I’d love to know if this would annoy others too. It drives me mad.

The assumption on here that everyone buys supermarket sandwiches is weird. I don’t think I’ve had one for about 17 years, since I was at uni.

badgermushrooms · 16/05/2023 12:28

DH makes sandwiches for me when I have to go into the office, not because we're doing some sort of reverse 1950s thing but because he is in charge of food (as I am in charge of everything else things like remembering to pay things, DIY, taking the recycling out). His sandwiches are excellent and if there was one in the fridge while I was WFH I would be eating it that day rather than letting it go all sad and stale for the next day. Your sandwiches must also be nice if he's choosing them over fancier options.

Its quite an eye opener really, I'm surprised how many people actually buy them, I honesty thought it was just students or whatever that would buy them cause the cba to make one. I didn't realise they were so popular!

BarbaraofSeville · 16/05/2023 12:40

Well I don't like ready made sandwiches either, they're very much a lunch of last resort to me, but googling suggests that 4 billion a year are sold in the UK, or more than one a week for every single person in the country.

So that must mean that quite a lot of people are buying them every day, despite this thread suggesting that no-one ever eats them.

I think he should insist on you making his sandwiches the same morning of the day he’s going to have them.

While dressed nicely, in full make-up, hair swept up in a tidy bun, swaying to appropriate music on Radio 2, smiling a happy smile.

This is so me. Also, although I realise that this is not everyone's cup of tea, you can multi-task and simultaneously dictate a day's work emails and then use the rest of the day to prepare supper and change one's clothes into something a little less casual.

Hankunamatata · 16/05/2023 12:50

I'd be more annoyed if he didn't eat them after I'd made them. I'd find it grim to leave them for 2 days

mezlou84 · 16/05/2023 13:57

If you've made them of course he's going to eat them. Have you told him you don't want him to eat them unless he goes to the office? I would eat them too if my hubby had gone to trouble of making them its only good manners that ypu eat something someone has gone to the trouble of making. Personally I would only want to eat fresh sandwiches anyway not ones that have been in fridge a couple of days as it can make bread a bit soggy and not taste as nice at all. You're seriously nit picking and doesn't make someone lazy at all, however if it was him not doing anything in house to help at then yes he's being lazy, but eating sandwiches you made then no its being polite.

Stop making packed lunches for a grown man and divide the chores some other, less mad, way.

Weird attitude. There's no one right way to divide the work.

I make my dh's lunches sometimes. I make more dinners too. But he does ALL of the laundry and cleans the bathrooms.

I don't see what's mad about it.

TemariPhoenix · 16/05/2023 14:53

I make my husband lunch because I organise the food in the house. I’d do my but if he made something himself and ended up using stuff I had set aside for dinner. But I don’t do any laundry, and he does all the paperwork for the bills, different people split their housework loads differently.

And after cleaning kitchen following dinner, put on peignoir with fresh nightgown underneath for evening with husband.

This is like peak Mumsnet pettiness 🤣 I’m amazed how most of you even stay married if I’m honest

diamondpony80 · 16/05/2023 15:59

I wouldn’t eat sandwiches made the night before never mind to say two days old. But why are YOU making his sandwiches? Can’t he make them for himself?

missjonesy · 16/05/2023 16:05

I make my partners lunch 99% of the time.
It doesn’t matter that he’s a grown up. It’s ok for someone to make lunch. Doesn’t add much for me to quickly whip up some sandwiches when I’m in and out of the fridge making tea or putting some leftovers in a pot. Saves him a job!
But to answer the question. I think it is a bit unreasonable to think he wouldn’t just eat the sandwiches. 1. They are made, it’s easy why wouldn't you? 2. If they are made the night before, they are getting on a bit. Starting to sweat, go soggy (depending what is in it) or go stale. 3. He might think you expect him to eat them. Have you ever talked to him about it?

No, of course he can't. It's a woman's job. And cancel the cheque while you're buttering that bread!
I'm almost certain that if someone came on here saying that her dh made his own sandwiches, but never did any for her at the same time, there would be a lot of posters calling him selfish.

GrannyMack · 16/05/2023 19:18

So, you make him lunch. He eats the lunch. As far as I'm concerned, regardless of where he eats it I think he's doing the right thing. If you don't want to make the sandwiches then tell him that but don't be unreasonable by objecting to him eating what you've made!

Boxofsockss · 16/05/2023 19:23

Why would you expect him to eat them the next day? Tbh I wouldn’t eat them. And if it’s that’s noting just ask him to make his own?

Doingmybest12 · 16/05/2023 19:27

I don't see how eating his premade sandwich is more lazy eating it at home or at work. It is the same thing.

GiltEdges · 16/05/2023 19:46

Not weird. If he’s home he has access to our Freud he, toaster, cooker etc
and can make whatever.

But what would be the point in him "making whatever" when you've already made his lunch and it's sitting right there in the fridge...? Confused

If you don't like making the sandwiches full stop, then stop doing it. Problem solved.

porridgeisbae · 16/05/2023 19:55

Whats wrong with making sandwiches for a couple days ahead..? . its the same loaf of bread, the same tub of butter, the same pack of ham. Nothing is older just cause it got assembled yesterday !

It gets soggy.

I imagine the supermarket ones (although they still get a bit mushier) have something about them to help them keep their texture more. Or maybe it's just the vaccum packing.

Not an affectation, I just don’t like sandwiches that have been refrigerated overnight. Not sure why my taste preference makes other people so cross, it doesn’t affect them at all 🤷🏻‍♀️. You do like them, and that’s also fine, doesn’t affect me.

I’m not cross at all I’m bemused at the vigorous responses regard sandwich Made in advance (1 or 2 days) . Bemused at such strong reaction to sandwich made previously and eaten next day.

By all means have the food you prefer,I’m not going to compel anyone to eat 1 or 2 date sandwich . I simply had no idea an overnight sandwich was considered such a culinary aberration

Fwiw, I have made pasta pesto on a Sunday popped in fridge ate it Monday & Tuesday at work with no ill effect

This appears to be one of those mn quirks that I have never encountered in real life or heard anyone have a strong opinion on an overnight sandwich or 1-2 day old sandwich

Oh don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I would suffer ill effects from eating 2 day old, refrigerated lunch. I just don’t like it, so I don’t do it. Nothing deeper than that. It might be a ‘MN quirk’, but I’m also a real life human outside of MN so I guess it must therefore be a ‘real life quirk’ too?

MysteryBelle · 16/05/2023 20:28

I like my sandwiches freshly made. It takes two minutes to make a sandwich. Five minutes if you’re going in slow motion and prepping tomatoes and lettuce from harvesting, washing, and cutting.

Lots of things keep well in the fridge or freezer but sandwiches are not one of them. The mayo, mustard, banana peppers, cheese, the bread, tomato, lettuce, it all gets soggy, damp, and grotesque.

Come on, all of you manic 2 day old sandwich makers know this.

I’m not suggesting you’re owt else than a sentient being
I've never encountered strong opinions (any opinion) regard sandwich life
Worked with a colleague who made and froze a few week worth of sandwiches

OhmygodDont · 16/05/2023 20:31

I know your not coming back op.

yeah a few days old sandwiches would be no good. Although some of the img why are you making his lunch here is funny.

I often send dh in with a full of beef stroganoff, curry, chilli or lasagna for his lunch 😅 but I’m a batch cooker so it’s a case of just grabbing something out the freezer and adding the rice/pasta. He knows I’m in a mood with him when he sees no tub out the freezer 😂
