Petty AIBU but… sandwiches!

I make my partner sandwiches to take to the office most weekdays.

I do this in the evening then put them in the fridge for him to take in the morning.

If he decides to work from home instead, he still eats the sandwiches, despite lots of other options instead - eggs on toast, salad, quiche etc we have in the house.

This annoys me as it seems so lazy and I have sandwiches to make again for the next day. He could save the ones I made for the following day.

I’d love to know if this would annoy others too. It drives me mad.

Not weird. If he’s home he has access to our Freud he, toaster, cooker etc
and can make whatever. The reason
for taking sandwiches into the office is that those things aren’t at the office.

I would have thought that was obvious. Maybe not!

It is obvious that he has access to fridge toaster cooker when he is at home yes. It isn’t obvious why you have to make his lunch if he is going to the office but he makes his own lunch whilst he is at home. And if you have an agreement such as he does all your washing and you make all his lunches, well then you should be making his lunch no matter. So you are still being unreasonable.

Personally I cannot imagine taking responsibly for making my husbands lunches, some of the joint chores yes we may have an understanding on, such as he vacuums and I dust, but tasks that are just for ourselves such as making our work lunch, is purely on each of us individually.

Ugh the fact that people's first issue is that you make him sandwiches. So predictable on here. I make my husbands lunch every day, it's my love language and I LOVE doing it for him. He makes me breakfast In bed and a cup of tea every morning. These are nice things to do for people guys. It's not slavery ffs

The glaring difference here of course being that the OP said she hates making his lunch.

He is correct in eating the fresh sandwiches you made for him, before they become too stale.

It would be wasteful to use more ingredients and time and energy when you have thoughtfully planned what is the most sensible lunch that day.

I would be annoyed that the family food resources were being wasted if my husband did not eat a perfectly good lunch while it was fresh.

You say you have divided up tasks and that you make cut lunches - well he is hardly taking advantage of you.

It would also be fair that, on some days, you request him to make all the lunches or that you are unable/too busy to make the lunches etc.

ememem84 · 16/05/2023 06:54

DH and I always make lunches for each other. Whether we’re at work or wfh.

if I’m making lunches for the kids I do ours too. Easy.

it’s nice to know I have a lunch made and ready when I’m wfh. Saves time so I can do other things on my break.

Zone2NorthLondon · 16/05/2023 07:03

Ah,another MN affectation & quirk that sandwiches must be made same day or it’s stale claggy digestion disaster. All that handwringing about a sandwich overnight in a fridge. What a fuss
I make my work sandwiches, salads etc night before and pop in fridge,I fortunately have survived this. I have not heaved . I have not had a stale lunch
in fact I recommend a basil ,olive and mozzarella with glug chilli oil made the night before it’s delicious

TheBerry · 16/05/2023 07:06

YABU.

Nobody wants to eat 2-day-old sandwiches (tbh even sandwiches left overnight in the fridge and then in a lunchbox til noon aren’t the best).

If this is your “job” (part of how you’ve divvied up household tasks) and he’s pulling his weight in other areas then I don’t see why it’s that annoying. It’s not like vacuuming the whole house - it’s a sandwich, takes fewer than 5 mins to make.

I’d be more annoyed if I made the sandwiches then he didn’t bother eating them.

Pls find something else that’s actually annoying to be annoyed about. I’m sure there’s something.

porridgeisbae · 16/05/2023 07:17

Isn't it more expensive if he eats the quiche etc than the sandwich, anyway?

But yep let him make his own stuff x

Elfblossom · 16/05/2023 07:18

Am I the only one who thinks that somewhere in a parallel universe or this one, there's a MensNet thread ...

AIBU - To ask my partner to stop making my sandwiches for work.

Long story short - She made my butties for work one day early on in our living together. She said it made her happy, was no trouble & she liked to look after me because I do things for her too, like defrosting her car on a cold morning, getting it MOT'd or new tyres when needed, mowing the lawn, putting the bins out etc, she says it's just fair task division.

Anyway, it was lovely to have fresh sandwiches for work, made with love.

Now though, we've been together a while and ... well, I don't think they're made with quite as much love these days!

I mentioned once that the cheese and pickle that day had reeeeally hit the spot and she's made the same cheese & pickle now for 118 days!

Since covid, I've spent some days working from home and so don't really need sandwiches made but, there they are, in the fridge ready, as she makes them the night before (i only know on the day if im not needed in the office) and so, even if I fancy a bacon roll or soup or anything .. I know I've GOT to eat the soggy cheese and pickle or she'll be upset that she made me lunch and I didn't eat it, then she'll start asking if I even still love her any more and then she'll ask if I'm having an affair and getting my lunch elsewhere ... SO, Would I BU to ask her ... not to make me sandwiches any more at all and in the fairness of task division, maybe she can mow the lawn instead?

😉😆

In fairness I wouldn't fancy 2 day old sandwiches either.

Although why doesn't he make his own? That bit would annoy me more.

This

NeedToChangeName · 15/05/2023 18:22

@ZeroFuchsGiven Oh I missed that part. I thought you were just saying you doubted that any sandwich could be frozen

Re supermarket sandwiches, I doubt they are frozen. Haven't heard of it before, and most of contain ingredients that can't be frozen eg mayo, lettuce, tomato etc

Apologies, I got usernames mixed up, it was not you who said that :)

saraclara · 16/05/2023 08:04

There's so much ridiculousness on this thread

I made my family's work/school sandwiches. It's easier and quicker to have one person make them all, then everyone make their own.
My husband however made every evening meal, while I relaxed.

Not liking two day old sandwiches isn't an affectation. It's a preference. To me there's all the difference in the world between fresh bread and refrigerated bread. If I need a pre-made sandwich I'll go to Pret or Gregg's where they're made that day, and any surplus at the end of the day is given away.

OP chose to make his sandwich. Her husband does other tasks. He ate the sandwich she made for him, which was reasonable, and she now gets that.
The end.

Not an affectation, I just don’t like sandwiches that have been refrigerated overnight. Not sure why my taste preference makes other people so cross, it doesn’t affect them at all 🤷🏻‍♀️. You do like them, and that’s also fine, doesn’t affect me.

marriedtoageordie · 16/05/2023 09:26

You are either happy making sandwiches for him (as you have said later on because you share jobs) or you are not.

If he was at work and ate then you would be in the same position as if he eats them at home.

You are entitled to like what you like, I can't see where anyone has been cross with you?

Well it depends on the sandwich. I always find packs of ham or other sliced meat quite expensive for what you get. So something like a ham sandwich isn't really a cheap option.

The quiche could have been home made, or bought reduced so not expensive, not that this was the OPs point anyway. She doesn't like making his sandwiches but seems to have not realised that she doesn't have to do it, wherever he's working on any particular day.

GreatGardenstuff · 16/05/2023 10:00

I’d probably be cross if he ate the other stuff before the sandwiches! Unless it was something which was about to go out of date. 2 day old sandwiches are not an appealing option, and I’d be happy he ate them when they were fresh.

SchoolTripDrama · 16/05/2023 10:19

Some of you are going to be realllllly shocked when you realise that most pre-packaged sandwiches are at least a day to 2 days old!

Hardly, because it's been mentioned dozens of times on this thread already. And we've said that we know that and that's why we don't buy them.

If you're going to try to post a gotcha, it's always best to read the thread first.

magratvonlipwig · 16/05/2023 11:48

Blimey.. all you " fresh this second " sandwich people.....Whats wrong with making sandwiches for a couple days ahead..? . its the same loaf of bread, the same tub of butter, the same pack of ham. Nothing is older just cause it got assembled yesterday !

Nagumo2128 · 16/05/2023 12:03

why does he not make his own sandwiches for his own lunch? And you made them for him to eat the next day why are you getting annoyed that he eats them? does it matter where he eats them?

Nagumo2128 · 16/05/2023 12:05

Shocked? Nope hence why I don't buy the vile things, they taste days old, I wouldn't waste my money.

I'm guessing everyone who is horrified by 2 day old sandwiches never picks up any from a supermarket .

No, I don’t.
