To think friend was embarrassed by what I wore?

I met up with friends for lunch and drinks. They were dressed casually, one was in a long silk kind skirt with trainers and the other two were in jeans.

I had on a black strap dress with a slit and heels, I saw friends eyes widen when I walked in and it made me worry I was overdressed compared to them.

It’s McDonalds not Mac.

I thought the McDonalds comment was quite funny.

It might help not to take yourself so seriously sometimes?

I wonder if your friends didn’t mention your dress or make any lighthearted remarks for fear of you reacting badly and getting very defensive? 😬

BadNomad · 14/05/2023 02:18

Why would your friend be embarrassed by that? Even if they were surprised to see you so dressed up, it isn't something for them to be embarrassed about.

JorisBonson · 14/05/2023 02:29

Did ye aye

CheekyHobson · 14/05/2023 02:40

Ooh, it’s rare to see such a clear example of projection in the wild.

Luckypom · 14/05/2023 02:47

@bartygk

yeah fun times 👍

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 14/05/2023 03:01

I did this once. Are you still pulling warm fries from your bra?

Oh. Just me then.

ImustLearn2Cook · 14/05/2023 03:31

If it was a cocktail place (do you mean a cocktail party/event or a cocktail bar), how were other people dressed at the venue?

Were you overdressed compared to the majority of people at the venue or just compared to your friends?

Clementinesucks · 14/05/2023 03:31

It sounds like evening wear but really who cares? If you project confidence in what you wear no one will question you.

aus12 · 14/05/2023 03:38

They were probably just surprised you were so dressed up for lunch. I live in London & I’ve never worn heels on a night out let alone to lunch. I don’t know anyone who wears heels anymore tbh

Grateful321 · 14/05/2023 03:40

Lol some of these replies - wow.
Good on ya, OP! Bet you looked lovely x

I have no recollection of writing that. Just woke up on sofa.

It's usually Monster Munch crumbs. We can but dream.

No, don't worry about it at all.

FabFitFifties · 14/05/2023 04:37

They are very immature if they were embarrassed. My friends would say simething like "wow look at you!" and the wearer would own it and say "one of us has got to make an effort!" These things happen all the time. To women.

Tighginn · 14/05/2023 05:12

I have a friend that always overdressing, but she is loud in ever other way too...

I've wondered about this! I'm in the US, and of course it's McDonald's here, but I've seen so many people on MN refer to it as "MacDonald's" I thought maybe that's what it was called there. Like you y'all call TJ Maxx, TK Maxx.

That is very funny.

But back to the OP, @bartygk as someone who has spent my entire life 'overdressed', because I love clothes and if you can't wear the good clothes now, when are you going to wear them? I would say that it's more about your feelings than theirs.

If you want to dress up, dress up (I got Cat Stevens in my head then...), that's actually not a bad call...

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are
And if you want to be high, be high
And if you want to be low, be low
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are

Thank you Yousef.

Anyhoo, if you want to wear a ball-gown to Tesco I'm not judging you, but you have to own it. Be comfortable in your skin, and then no-one can 'embarrass' you or make you feel embarrassed for a very simple choice. You go ahead and adorn yourself as you see fit. There's too much opinion on what women wear really.

Ahh, no it's McDonald's here too.

It's definitely TK Maxx here, are you sure you're not getting confused with T J Hughs which is also a discounter?

ThomasinaLivesHere · 14/05/2023 05:49

It’d be good to get an answer to the question about how the others were dressed in the place. Was everyone else dressed casually?

Effieswig · 14/05/2023 05:53

I doubt they were embarrassed. What would they have to be embarrassed about? They were maybe surprised you turned up so dressed up. But that doesn’t mean they were embarrassed. What you describe doesn’t sound like embarrassment either. Sounds like surprise.

Bogggle · 14/05/2023 05:55

@Hal9001 in America it’s called TJ Maxx for some reason but it’s TK here

Agree 💯

marapournumber4 · 14/05/2023 06:04

TJ Maxx in Australia too.
Don't give it another thought OP
I'm surprised your friends didn't like mine - "Oi , look at you!"

Clarinet1 · 14/05/2023 06:14

Reminds me of the time a friend of mine who is a professional classical singer was told she couldn’t bring her expensive, posh, bulky concert dress onto a plane as hand luggage. She wasn’t going to trust the baggage handlers with it so she nipped into the loos and put the dress on for the flight! I guess you could call that overdressed but it solved the problem!
