Would DH be unreasonable to wear a short suit to a wedding?

We have a few weddings coming up this July and August. Given the very hot weather last year and that DH runs warm, he’s considering wearing a short suit if the weather is hot. We’re young, and the weddings we’ve been invited to are relaxed and casual, rather than a traditional occasion. We’re not part of the wedding party, and as DH is tall he tends to be at the back of photos. Here are some examples for styles he’s looking at. I know some of these are styled casually, but DH will be in a shirt and smart shoes. I know it’s bit left field but would be interested to see what the view is as DH is considered about sweltering in a traditional suit but also doesn’t want to go totally rogue.

I've only ever seen them at beach weddings / weddings abroad tbh.

With a nice pair of loafers (fancy Todd's or similar?) it might look alright. Can't think of anything worse than wearing a full suit to a summer wedding, at least women can get away with shorter / flowy dresses!

UmbilicusSuperficialis · 13/05/2023 18:04

I think it looks shit, but that’s my personal opinion, and I think it would be acceptable at the weddings you describe! I don’t think shorts make that much difference to feeling hot. It’s the top half that matters more.

moleeye · 13/05/2023 18:05

Good grief no!

I'm getting married in August and would be really annoyed if a guest turned up in shorts

Unless it's on a beach (and even then I would be a bit 🤨)

HollyBookBlue · 13/05/2023 18:05

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I didn't know those existed! Amazing

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 13/05/2023 18:05

God no! If have been a bit miffed if someone had turned up to my wedding in shorts.

Castlerock44 · 13/05/2023 18:07

Shorts can look nice on men but a shorts suit seems like a contraction itms. Just a bit too contrived?

Allschoolsareartschools · 13/05/2023 18:08

I'm not sure, the whole issue of smart shoes with shorts is a bit weird. Surely no socks?!
Hmmm, might get attention for all the wrong reasons & he'll look a proper knob if there's a change in the weather!!

*contradiction

I’m on the fence.

It’s subversive and will certainly attract attention, your DH would probably have to put up with some good natured ribbing. It definitely stretches the bounds of what is acceptable in terms of male wedding attire.

However, they do look smart and well turned out, and are not objectionable as far as I’m concerned. Far more swish than a short sleeved shirt and crumpled linen trouser combo suggested up-thread. I echo PPs saying it is very unfair men have no real options when it comes to formal wear for hot weather. Worth remembering that all photos when you are seated for the ceremony, speeches, and wedding breakfast no-one would know!

Think it comes down to how confident your DH is, and what your friends will make of it.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 13/05/2023 18:10

My son wore a short suit to a wedding, when he was 3 😁

Starseeking · 13/05/2023 18:10

I think those suits look quite nice, though can see I'm in the minority!

Skybluepinky · 13/05/2023 18:13

No not unless that’s wot they have asked u to wear.

Flowerblooms · 13/05/2023 18:14

No idea why but men in that kind of outfit makes me think of the blokes from Towie (I don’t even watch it, just from the adverts I have seen)😂🤷🏼‍♀️

MrsToothyBitch · 13/05/2023 18:14

Just buy a normal linen suit! Shorts suits look ridiculous.

Bathroomlove · 13/05/2023 18:15

@toastofthetown casual weddings & if he looks that good in one, then
totally fine!! Enjoy yourselves!!

What does a humanist wedding generally consist of?

Anything the couple wants really. Generally they follow the same general script but they are much more personal than civil weddings, and with much less restrictions ie they don’t have to be under a structure, you can write your own vows, you don’t have to say all the boring jargon that is a legal requirement with a civil wedding.

Banditdog · 13/05/2023 18:16

Don’t be so ridiculous. I’d be annoyed, maybe not at the time, but upon reflection, if somebody turned up to my wedding in shorts. How disrespectful. Oh and I am not religious and don’t know what that as got to do with it.

CheersForThatEh · 13/05/2023 18:16

I dont like it. Would you wear shorts to a wedding?

Would he wear it to the office in front of colleagues? If not (because he might feel embarrassed) then it's not suitable for a wedding.

Tempone · 13/05/2023 18:16

Don't know why people have such a strong reaction to what others wear!
If he likes and is comfortable then go for it!

Parker231 · 13/05/2023 18:16

Looks good to me - no need to be overly formal at a wedding. It’s a celebration not a job interview.

Bathroomlove · 13/05/2023 18:16

You think the guy in those photos looks ridiculous? I think he looks good.

MasterBeth · 13/05/2023 18:17

He'll look like a dick.

Also, he won't be significantly cooler. The area between his knees and his ankles won;t overheat him.

Mangogogogo · 13/05/2023 18:18

were getting married soon and I genuinely do not care what people wear! I can’t believe people would be annoyed?! I just want my friends there and comfortable. as long as they’re not naked I really don’t care. We’re quite casual anyway though I guess?

i would, clearly, have zero problems with your husband wearing this. In fact I’m gunna look out for him incase you’re one of our guests 😂

Why would you feel that way?
IMO the guy in the photos looks good. It's not like he's turn up in beach shorts & a rash shirt.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 13/05/2023 18:18

In honesty though it really depends on whether he can pull it off. If he's usually the trendy type he probably could. My DH's mates would take the piss so hard if he wore something like that.
