To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

Oof. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to admit they were an addict. You’re just advertising your lack of self control.

There's no shame in that. Much better than being a twat 😉

There’s lots of shame in being an addict. It’s not something anyone desires to be and nobody would ever think better of you for it. Quite the contrary.

In 2019 there was an outbreak of respiratory illnesses amongst people who used E-cigarettes. This phenomenon was labeled 'EVALI' which stands for "Electronic cigarette (E-cigarette), or , Product Use-Associated Lung Injury" and is a life-threatening illness of the lungs associated with E-cigarette use. It is believed to be caused by certain chemicals in E-cigarette cartridges, such as vitamin E acetate, but the exact pathophysiological mechanism is yet to be elucidated. Since 2019, the CDC has recorded over 2800 cases in the United States with over 60 deaths. Though many people recover from EVALI, the long-term implications on pulmonary health are unknown. The purpose of this retrospective study was to demonstrate the pulmonary function test (PFT) findings in a group of patients who recovered from a diagnosis of EVALI. We reviewed the cases of 23 adult patients who presented to two major academic hospitals of the Northwell Health System with confirmed EVALI and followed up in our outpatient clinics with PFTs. Most patients had significantly reduced diffusion capacity (DLCO) demonstrating loss of functioning alveolar units. Given that average follow-up was over a month after discharge, this leads us to believe that EVALI can lead to persistent lung damage. However, further follow-up would be necessary to identify the full impact of E-cigarette use on the pulmonary function.

From a 2022 research journal. But yeah, doesn't need banning 🙄

This happened in America. Not here
The chemicals that cause this are banned from UK vapes.

It's the dropping of the cigarette butts that gets me! Who do the selfish scumbags think is going to pick it up for them?!

Vapers with disposable vapes litter too (not all of them obviously). If I take a walk through our city centre, I'm guaranteed to see loads lying all over the pavements.
The environmental impact of all these disposable batteries being chucked is horrendous.

No theres not lots of shame being an addict.

I would judge you far more for being a nasty twat than anyone else being addicted to substances or alcohol. You sound deeply unpleasant and very judgemental. Not popular traits in people. I doubt people think of you highly for your childish sneery judgemental personality.

I’d just like to know where smokers are supposed to smoke.
In public, apparently not at all.
In their own home, apparently gross and disgusting and some people swear it can travel through brick walls! Sorry but that’s absolute bullshit!
In their garden, well no because then it aims itself straight through peoples windows or affects their enjoyment of their garden.
So where?

Threads like this make me feel like being a less considerate smoker because they show me that many people will never be happy unless smoking is 100% banned everywhere.

If I’m in a pub garden that allows smoking, I will smoke. I’ve paid my money to be there, same as the non smokers, they have the option to move indoors, I don’t. If someone’s eating at a table near me then yes, I do either wait or move away. I’m not a total dick. But if they’re just drinking then it’s on them if they don’t like it. The fake loud coughing doesn’t work on me.

Same.

CornishGem1975 · 08/05/2023 19:38

I view someone vaping like I do an overweight person running, I presume they are trying to make themselves more healthier, by stopping smoking.

But that's not the case @Whammyyammy A lot of vapers never smoked in the first place.

HauntedPencil · 08/05/2023 19:40

Vaping dosent bother me as an ex smoker. If I'm honest I try and suck in a bit of smoke - but you're right it is less well policed I've seen one in a soft play cafe (asked to stop though).

Moonshine5 · 08/05/2023 19:43

I like living in a free country, even if it means I'm inconvenienced by various things, vapes etc. A small price to pay.

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 19:47

Jonei · 08/05/2023 19:34

Same.

Ex smoker, I last smoked 13 years ago and I couldn’t agree more.

What is it with MN ? If someone doesn't like something they all want banned for everyone else . You can't ban everything you don't personally like 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s not about disliking something though is it? Smoking harms everyone, inhaling secondhand smoke is dangerous and it does cause health problems. It should be banned, it’s a dreadful and extremely harmful habit.

The difference is that smoking and vaping harms those and everyone else around them.

And as we know, these addicts lack any form of willpower and self control so need it banning for their own good because they’re unable to stop on their own.

fugly1 · 08/05/2023 20:06

Yes!!! As an ex smoker it's absolutely disgusting and I can't believe I used to smell like that!!!Blush

wildinthecountry · 08/05/2023 20:06

It's not just smoking and vaping though is it ? MN would ban everything 😁

Jonei · 08/05/2023 20:06

Well it's not going to be banned.

I'm going to continue with it.

And you can weep in your cornflakes.

Oh yes. There's always a bunch of self appointed limited thinkers who think the world should be run exactly to suit them.

It will never be banned, so you can moan as much as you want.

There was a particularly heated thread recently where posters wanted dogs banned from all spaces just in case someone had an allergy but from this thread dogs are ok but vapers will send all the mumsnetters to a&e with asthma attacks.

@SunnySaturdayMorning are you this disgusting to people with any illness? Addicts aren't addicted because of self control, it's a disease and a horrific one at that.
Do you know about the opioid epidemic? People given highly addictive drugs and falsely told they were not addictive then abandoned with no support to save face of the people who lied. Are they advertising a lack of self control, scum to be scoffed at by sanctimonious dickheads?

@SunnySaturdayMorning Anyone can be an addict, you know.

For instance, some people are addicted to being sanctimonious twats. I just pity those people, because it's clear they have no self-control.

Tidsleytiddy · 09/05/2023 10:03

SunnySaturdayMorning · 08/05/2023 15:46

It is, thanks.

Why do you think you have the right to do your seedy little addiction when it has been banned? Or do you really lack that much self control that you just can’t wait? How embarrassing.

Not as embarrassing as over reacting to vapour because of your sheer ignorance. Do the research. Read up. Get your priorities right. Your establishment is obviously one that encourages the slobbering dogs. Crack on

Nope. Don’t accept dogs either.
