To not understand why anyone would not watch the Coronation?

OK, I get that you are an edgy republican, but are you not a little bit nosy?
And if you really don't care, why are you on every Coronation thread telling everyone you don't care? Why would you not just ignore them, as you don't care?
I personally have no time for the Royal family and think they should be abolished completely, but I can't imagine not watching such a big thing for the whole country, in the same way I watched the euro Cup final even though I could not name any of the players as I have no interest in football.
Why wouldn't you?

I’m a nosey person but I don’t give a crap about this. Telly hasn’t been on, we’ve had a really nice morning out at the beach in the rain but it was busy, lots of others clearly avoiding it too 😂
The whole institution is a farce imo and I bet they’ve all had faces like sour lemon smacked arses throughout.
I’m not remotely edgy, I just don’t like the outdated concept of a monarchy and don’t support it.

GeekyThings · 06/05/2023 14:26

I'm not an edgy republican, just a republican. So probably similar to a person who can't stand football not watching the football - it's not really taking a stand, I'm sure no one cares if I watch it or not, it's basically a sheer lack of interest in the proceedings!

This is the only coronation thread I've come on, because it looked like it might be relevant to me as it's asking why I didn't watch it.

I watched a lot of the election coverage because I'm interested in politics; some people who aren't that interested in politics might watch it, I guess, but I wouldn't expect most of them to. This seems pretty much the same situation to me.

bombayw · 06/05/2023 14:28

I'm busy.

I don’t think I’m ‘edgy’ for being a Republican. I’m not watching it because I have zero interest in what will happen, or has happened or any of it. Why would anyone who isn’t into the monarchy watch it??

getafringenotbotox · 06/05/2023 14:28

Because I'm lying by a pool in Benidorm.

Biscuitsneeded · 06/05/2023 14:29

I'm just not interested. I don't like pomp and circumstance anyway, am not a royalist and I feel sorry for the individuals caught up in it. In fact my only emotion with regard to most Royals is pity - pity that they were born into it and had no choice, pity that they are so fucked up and dysfunctional because of what the role requires. The only one I bear any actual ill will is Andrew because what he's done is shameful; the rest are just flawed little humans elevated by accident of birth to a job that I wouldn't want. But I do disapprove of what this is all costing when so many of us are forced to use food banks, and I would respect him more if he had asked for a very toned down affair and given the money to good causes instead.

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 06/05/2023 14:29

It's boring.

MyTruthIsOut · 06/05/2023 14:29

I couldn’t think of anything more boring to watch.

Casilero · 06/05/2023 14:30

I didn't actually realise it was on today to be honest. I thought it was Monday and that was why we'd got the day off.

DarkDarkNight · 06/05/2023 14:30

I saw the title of your thread in active, I’m not ‘on the coronation thread’. The reason I haven’t watched is because it hasn’t piqued my interest. I’m not a football fan but watched some games in the Euro and World Cup because it captured my interest. This just hasn’t.

I’m not a royalist but watched the Queen’s funeral because it felt like the end of an era. The Queen was hugely admired and respected in a way the rest of the family aren’t. I think for a lot of people it’s just a nothing event. I’m glad of the bank holiday that’s all.

JassyRadlett · 06/05/2023 14:32

I don't quite get the 'history in the making' argument. It's rare, and it's quite a spectacle of pageantry, but very few coronations actually change things, or are of significant historical interest.

Those that are the exception are usually because they didn't go terribly well!

JMSA · 06/05/2023 14:32

I tried, I really did. But I'm not into the Royals and it was so boring. I honestly felt sorry for the Royal children Grin

AuntieMarys · 06/05/2023 14:32

"Edgy republican " here. Also history graduate in my 60s, but not interested in it at all. The royal family are a disgrace.

JMSA · 06/05/2023 14:32

dementedpixie · 06/05/2023 13:56

I'm in Scotland so it feels very far removed from me. Have no interest in the monarchy. Basically I just don't care!

Same here.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 06/05/2023 14:34

Are you serious? Grin
What's to be nosy about? That family, one way or the other, is constantly in the news and I'm not interested in them other than obliquely on here.

I don't want a monarchy. I'm not interested in watching any of them be crowned - not unless it's by a well-aimed coconut or similar.

Sissynova · 06/05/2023 14:34

Nothing edgy about it, just literally not the tiniest bit of interest. Didn’t watch it, didn’t read about it in the run up, won’t watch anything about it in the coming days.

Is it really strange that some people aren't interested? I have zero interest in any of these people.

Blueisthecolour1 · 06/05/2023 14:36

I’m an edgy Republican & that’s why I didn’t watch it. I made beans on toast instead. That’s how edgy & wild I am in fact.

Which is the same as saying I’ve no interest in history. Plenty of historical things occur I don’t agree with, but I listen watch and learn. Because it’s not about it I’m interested or not, it’s about watching history in the making.

XBealtaine · 06/05/2023 14:38

Yeh, agree @Katypp I'd find it more unusual to have zero interest. I'm Irish, and in Ireland, so I'm not raising British children, but I followed a live coverage for 45 minutes, saw the horses with their blue manes, the carriage, all of them arriving. I thought Beatrice looked lovely. Camilla's dress is fabulous. Charles looked fairly calm! I'm glad I had a peek, why wouldn't you. I'm not invested in to the longevity or the dissolution (is that the word) of the monarchy but it's an impressive display of pageantry and it's happening regardless of whether I have a quick look or not.

XBealtaine · 06/05/2023 14:39

Don't make me watch football though. There's a limit.

VeggieSalsa · 06/05/2023 14:40

I’m vaguely pro monarchy. I had plans to visit a local market with my friend, and I rarely sit down to watch TV in the day. I’m not protesting or abstaining.

I feel much the same about the coronation as I do Coronation Street - it’s a British institution that I appreciate is culturally important, I just don’t have the time / inclination to partake myself.

Againstmachine · 06/05/2023 14:40

People who say it's History in the making, it's a meaningless phrase everything is history in the making.

It's wild people think people are ignorant because they don't want to watch it.

HashtagShitShop · 06/05/2023 14:42

Not edgy or commenting all over or even slightly interested at all. Have been watching stuff from my sky hard drive that's been collecting for a bit and doing some sorting out of house bits.

Currently on an Agatha Raisin rewatch binge.

But then we're back to the question of whether this is really 'history in the making' or whether people have got a bit caught up in the hype and marketing that surrounds monarchy.

This might turn out to be a moment of historical significance but given the prevailing forces and the factors involved it feels a little unlikely.
