To not understand why anyone would not watch the Coronation?

OK, I get that you are an edgy republican, but are you not a little bit nosy?
And if you really don't care, why are you on every Coronation thread telling everyone you don't care? Why would you not just ignore them, as you don't care?
I personally have no time for the Royal family and think they should be abolished completely, but I can't imagine not watching such a big thing for the whole country, in the same way I watched the euro Cup final even though I could not name any of the players as I have no interest in football.
Why wouldn't you?

You could watch it on your phone or mobile device.

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 19:49

@Florenz ill take a punt…. You’re retired?

Personally I couldn't have, not without cancelling my pre-existing plans. Though even if that had been doable, it would still have been an hourly rate plus weekend enhancement situation. And data!

I could probably project it onto a dog's arse doesn't mean I'm going to.

I probably would watch that.

DanceMonster · 07/05/2023 20:04

How on earth would me not watching a crown being put on someone’s head cause division or conflict?

  1. I didn't know the TV licence was suspended for the day
  2. What would you pay me for my time?
Holidaywwyd · 07/05/2023 20:05

Because I don't have a TV and I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck anyway

Holidaywwyd · 07/05/2023 20:06

In the same way that if I did have a TV I wouldn't watch euro final/world cup final/Wimbledon either as I couldn't give a flying fuck about them either

Oh I can understand people not watching the whole thing but I think everyone should be tuning in for the main coronation ceremony. It should be something that unites us as Britons and it's sad that so many people just want to create division and unrest.

We are not a hive mind though and lots of people don't want a monarchy and also lots of people were not comfortable at the cost at a time many are struggling. It shows that the monarchy are so far removed from the people of their country.

People are not just going to put these opinions to one side on the day. And many don't want to contribute to the viewing numbers. All are valid view points

PinkCherryBlossoms · 07/05/2023 20:10

Its weird how there are always some royalists who can't just enjoy the ceremony and have their day, but also want to try and co-opt everyone else in too. There isn't a parallel cohort of republicans trying to herd the population into football stadiums and make them boo the anthem.

I read it was 20m people watching it at the peak. So more people not watching it. So that means those involved or watching are the ones creating division and unrest?

Wasn't interested. I would have watched the fly past as my son's squadron was supposed to be taking part, but it was pulled due to the bad weather. So I haven't watched any of it.

aintnothinbutagstring · 07/05/2023 20:19

We went shopping - the shopping centre was packed out, car parks full, seems we weren't the only ones who thought watching the coronation was dull as dishwater. I'm not a republican in particular - no strong feelings either way - watched coverage of the Royal weddings - I think King Charles is a rather boring character though, not as likeable as his mother, or his sons.

Rosscameasdoody · 07/05/2023 20:37

There was a placard carried by two of the anti monarchy campaigners yesterday. It read ‘Don’t you think this is all a bit silly ?’. That just about sums up my feelings. The RF haven’t exactly been paragons of virtue have they ?

Leaving aside the historical stuff, let’s look at recent events. From Edward VIII abdication, not to mention him supporting the Nazis and allegedly making a pact with Hitler to bomb Britain into submission and crown him king, to the Queen refusing to allow her sister to marry a divorcee - that turned out well, considering only one of Her Maj’s own children wasn’t subsequently divorced. The Charles and Diana/Camilla saga - I still can’t believe how easily the public have forgiven Charles and Camilla for what they did to Diana. Then we have the disgraced Prince Andrew, and most recently, the whole Harry and Meghan shitshow. All punctuated by the various jubilee celebrations to paper over the cracks.

And now, in the midst of a cost of a disastrous cost of living crisis, taxpayers money is being lavished on the already obscenely wealthy RF, to pay for the coronation of two philandering hypocrites in the hope that the public will eat it up, and that the republican voices will be silenced. So, yes, I think it’s definitely ‘all a bit silly’.

Supermarkets are always rammed whenever any kind of 'event' telly is on. Royal weddings, world cup finals etc. People who aren't into it always think it'll be deserted, and it's not. I have made that mistake before!

Notanothernewname · 07/05/2023 21:21

On another note who chose the acts performing at the concert tonight? I mean Katy Perry, Lionel Ritchie and Take That! Oh and not forgetting those great singers Olly Murs and Nicole Scherzinger

No Queen, no Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey. I could think of many more who would have been great too.

One of the moments I remember from previous concerts is Brian May on Buck Palace roof.

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 07/05/2023 21:24

I’ve not watched or read a thing. I’m just not interested in it. I know it’s historic, culturally significant, etc, but there’ll be another one before long. And I probably won’t watch that.

Frabbits · 07/05/2023 22:24

Florenz · 07/05/2023 15:00

I wouldn't say it was a pivot point but it is still the beginning of a new era in British history, just like the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 was.

Is it fuck. Whichever twat is on the throne is of zero consequence.
