So today someone has released a new video outlining the chef/campaigner Jack Monroe's many many lies AND it was announced today that one of her previous donors has been successful in getting her summoned to court to address an unpaid CCJ. As someone who has been irritated by her obvious lies for years I can't deny I'm so happy word is getting out!

I think she clearly has MH issues, and i agree that living so much of her life on Twitter etc isn't good for her.

My personal opinion is that what started off well, kind of lost its way, and if you really only have one schtick, it is hard to stay relevant and on top of it. I remember JM having a bit of a tantrum about Jamie Oliver muscling in on her territory, and thinking: he really does know about cooking, food, nutrition and textures though.

What she, as do so many other "social media stars" needs is someone in her life to tell her when to stop. I feel badly for her with so many people piling on. But her tendency to want to fight each and every one of them isn't good for her.

OTOH: people who feel cheated by her, especially those who have sent money, have the right to be angry about it all. People just having a pop because they can should take a good hard look at themselves.

Verv · 19/05/2023 12:41

She's a grifter. Always has been.

usernother · 19/05/2023 12:45

She could stop it all by holding her hands up, and agreeing to refund everyone. Then coming off SM, getting paid regular employment, and sorting herself out. She's told far too many lies now for anyone to trust her again. It's really that simple.

HatchetJob · 19/05/2023 12:47

How was she not cancelled for the Grenfell stuff I don’t know. She was a call handler for the fire service for a few years. She certainly wasn’t any kind of expert. I think her dad was fairly high up though. I have a friend who is a call handler for the police, for decades, she does not think she knows anything about policing though!

It’s definitely some kind of central character syndrome, desperate to be the important figure. Even just if it means it’s a pack of lies.

OneTC · 19/05/2023 12:47

IClaudine · 19/05/2023 12:12

I think it is a bit much to compare her to Farage and Yaxley-Lennon! They are both dangerous men. Jack is very small fry in comparison, most people don't have a clue who she is.

The messages aren't the same but the grift is identical

Crikeyalmighty · 19/05/2023 12:59

I'm afraid I'm with @OneTC whilst the messages and reach are very different- the idea of grifting via donations from naive , non media savvy people who are very often struggling themselves is the same.

If Jack genuinely was in this position and fulfilled all the pledges- then I wouldn't have an issue- but she/he isn't

Greysofa · 19/05/2023 12:59

Nope, i’m enjoying it too. Hoping it’s the start of people being able to genuinely question the motives of these grifters without being called a ‘troll’. No doubt some trolling for exist, but being asked to justify where donations have gone is not trolling. Im
hoping PTWM is next on the list

CurlewKate · 19/05/2023 13:48

I think it's heartbreaking. She has done some absolutely fantastic campaigning-there are so few people speaking out for people in food poverty. And I have to assume all this
stems from her obviously fragile mental health. I know that's not an excuse, but I can't be triumphant about it.

Can you pinpoint exactly what she has done for food poverty?

I completely disagree: scammers and liars deserve to be called out by others. I haven't personally sent JM any money, I wouldn't dream of it, but it doesn't mean I won't speak out against a despicable cheat

Ameanstreakamilewide · 19/05/2023 13:59

It's all been completely avoidable, so it's her own fault.
All the stupid lies that she expects people to believe are just insulting and wouldn't fool a 10 year old.

She doesn't have a penny to bless herself with, so she has to buy soap, boil it for hours to turn it into shower gel. 🙄
Normal people would just use the soap.

She said she's drinking a bottle of whiskey a day, along with 40 Tramadol tablets.
Normal people would be dead. But not our plucky heroine. 🙄

She admitted (in the recent Guardian interview) that she spunked other people's (Patreon donated) money on expensive shite that she doesn't want.

But she's feted like she's the second coming.

All of her chickens have come home to roost and I'm enjoying the schadenfreude.

SweetSakura · 19/05/2023 14:03

She's harmed most of the causes she purports to champion
-arthritic and disabled yet can walk miles with a rucksack of shopping on her back

  • so poor she "boils soap" yet buys multiple expensive sideboards
  • trans /non binary yet posts pouty cleavage shots all over Instagram

But I could ignore all that if she wasn't scamming people for money for fake legal battles /by misleading them about her situation

yeah, thinking about it, you're right. We should call out liars and cheats.

Aye.

I'm down so low in the gutter saying this that I'm going to need a crane to get me out but I'm glad she's not managed to sue Anderson. Both belong in the sewers but, in fairness, I don't think he asks people to fund his "campaigns" then spaffs the money on furniture and (if she's to be believed) whisky.

She actually deserves more than a CCJ. She deserves to be locked up for fraud.

She has done for years, exactly what he accused her of doing. Feeding (literally) off the goodwill of people, most of whom were actually poor (unlike her) and taking their money.

Anyone has the right to jump on a bandwagon. Joe Wickes did it in lockdown and did very nicely out of it. Delia, Jamie and Allegra thingy have all published cookbooks on economising and using cheaper foodstuffs. None of them have asked their fans to send a tenner so they can sue their detractors for spurious reasons and then neither sued them or given the money back.

I'd like to see her tax returns.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 19/05/2023 14:11

Jamie Oliver and Tom Kerridge could both probably sue her for libel.

LuvSmallDogs · 19/05/2023 14:12

I read her old blog when my sister (who can be fairly "adventurous" in the kitchen) recommended it to me.

I thought it was total bloody bullshit from the joy that came across in her writing describing shitty poverty things that you have to do.

I remember she waxed lyrical about agitating dirty clothes with a potato masher in the bathtub, and "maybe never getting a washing machine again anyway".

Bitch, I've been there, when I was in temporary accommodation we all had allotted days and times in the laundry room that weren't enough for families - and you don't want stuff with wee/poo from accidents/leaky nappies to wait - so we were all handwashing too. We didn't fucking like it though.

She's sick in the head. The acceptable face of poverty, because she's well off and has made that money exploiting actual poor people.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 19/05/2023 14:23

Well said, @LuvSmallDogs

Couldn’t give a fuck about someone I don’t know.
I just love being able to gloat over the failures and miseries of the people I know well.
One of life’s little joys.
😉😁😁😁

ladycarlotta · 19/05/2023 14:56

I knew her, a little, before she became Jack Monroe. This was at the time she was trying out selling her own photography etc. I really only knew her in passing but there were some things about her later narrative that I found surprising - although at the time I just vaguely thought that there are things about their lives people don't tell you, and obviously she'd been embarrassed to have been that skint with a baby.
I do think she's a bit of a fabulator/self-aggrandiser. She's one of those people who are 100% earnest about whatever it is they happen to be doing until the wheels fall off/they get overwhelmed/something else takes their interest, and I think living that way in the public eye is really unhealthy. She's erratic, disorganised and all-or-nothingy and I have some sympathy for that but it is doing quite a lot of genuine harm. I don't think she's necessarily a bad person but she has too many people around her who'll praise whatever hobby horse she's currently on rather than nudging her towards a reality check.

whynotwhatknot · 19/05/2023 14:57

its th asking for money every 5minutes that done it really-someone aske where their money had gone and she blocked them

Please provide some links to this. I've seen loads of people on twitter asking for any evidence of anything Jack has ever accomplished in the 10 years of campaigning and no one ever provides any actual evidence.
Her time lines have no photos of her helping at Foodbanks. She rarely, if ever, links or promotes causes etc.
She does nothing unless it's an opportunity to promote herself and earn herself money.

The media have a lot to answer for in terms of giving her such a platform. Particularly the Guardian which still continues to give her column inches even, incredibly, in the wake of the fantastical beg that was Hunger Hurts 2 and even more incredibly even after she admitted to spending money donated to her on astonishing amounts of expensive furniture.

LuvSmallDogs · 19/05/2023 16:14

@SweetSakura , I'd imagine that whoever at the Guardian deals with Jack wouldn't know what to make of a "real Jack", the kind of person likely to be trapped in poverty for a long time. And that's not me knocking those people at all.
