So today someone has released a new video outlining the chef/campaigner Jack Monroe's many many lies AND it was announced today that one of her previous donors has been successful in getting her summoned to court to address an unpaid CCJ. As someone who has been irritated by her obvious lies for years I can't deny I'm so happy word is getting out!

I've never understood why no one ever called her out about the things she's said about her dad. He was a firefighter , I know several including family members, and they have always been fairly well paid. Also until fairly recently they worked 4 days on 4 days off and most had a second job!

My friend retired in his early 50s from the brigade and his pension is more than enough to love on despite his never bothering to go for promotion

Still a headline speaker at a lit festival I used to have some respect for, sigh.

If she'd kept it to recipes and helping manage extremely low budgets, on a temporary basis, then fine. Unfortunately the personal issues, and hardship tales have taken over. She should have been a hopeful, inspirational tale of how to overcome poverty, but instead now appears to be subsidised and supported by her followers.

HatchetJob · 17/05/2023 18:05

I don’t think she’s actually that interested in the cooking. I think it was a means to be famous. I am a capable cook and nothing I’ve made has worked properly. She could have branched out earlier into something more general but it’s too late now.

venerabletilly · 18/05/2023 10:57

You might be right @HatchetJob I made a loaf cake, from her first book.

I don't know if she was genuine back then, but at the time I remember reading the 'hunger hurts' foreword in her book and feeling sad that she went through that. When I last looked I was more cynical and wondered how removing all of the lightbulbs really helped.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 18/05/2023 11:30

The "cooking" was her "thing" until "call me they" was her thing, which was her thing until autism was her thing.
Is she old enough for menopause to be her thing yet? It will be.

HatchetJob · 18/05/2023 11:46

@venerabletilly did you read Hunger Hurts 2?
10 years of working to suggest she was still living in poverty (whilst renting a huge house in a very expensive area) that was the point I knew it was all fake.

JulieHoney · 18/05/2023 12:03

I don't really think "cooking" was her thing, it just ended up spinning that way.

"Eating cheaply" was her thing. She had some pretty good ideas about that initially. But then that was dragged out into several cookbooks, which were quite frankly rubbish. The first one had a lot of easy cheap meals, but they weren't exactly things you'd choose to eat if you weren't trying to do it spending as little as possible. They went downhill from there.

I think she craves the attention. I think that's her addiction as much as anything else. And like any addiction, it harms her.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/05/2023 12:08

What she has done is no doubt bordering on criminal but I don't find anything to be happy about in her downfall. Things are not right with her for sure and I think it's a bit cunty to be enjoying this. I'd say the same about Katie Price and other people who unravel in public.

Thing is, Jack Monroe doesn't "unravel" She attacks, threatens to sue, lies her way out of explaining every lie she's been shown to tell etc etc. She's a scammer.
Whatever you think about other famous people who have clearly had problems leading to public unravelling (Katie Price, Daniela Westbrook, etc etc) they weren't living a lie and scamming other people by inventing their own narrative to take people in.
JM has done that, time and again.

HatchetJob · 18/05/2023 12:55

I think the ‘unravelling’ is part of the play. She frequently seems to be having breakdowns and then a few days later ‘living her best life’. She’s not stupid how to work this. It’s distracted people from her behaviour for years

trebarwith1 · 18/05/2023 13:36

She tried to help people, she has poor mental health.

I can think of far more people who deserve your vitriol than her.

Cowparslee · 18/05/2023 13:42

where's the video?

I feel a bit sorry for her, she doesn't seem very well to me

Nicknacky · 18/05/2023 13:47

So you are ok with her pleading poverty and lying to people who then gave her their money?

One women on disability benefits gave her £10 and she was happy to take it. That’s appalling.

HatchetJob · 18/05/2023 13:54

Has she actually helped poor people. I mean done stuff, not attached herself to others work and say her name isn’t on it as she was ‘working behind the scenes’. Tweeting ‘aren’t the tories terrible’ doesn’t actually help poor people.

Her mental health issues strangely manifest themselves when she is under criticism.

You've believed the con like thousands others.

queenMab99 · 18/05/2023 13:55

Does anyone really believe in the integrity of 'influencers' ?
Anything on Facebook or Instagram is either totally made up or misrepresented, I just take the occasional useful hint or recipe, and disregard the rest.

ClarissaExplainsSome · 18/05/2023 13:59

Unfortunately some people did believe her, and transferred her money. She's living off other people's generosity and I'm yet to see any indication she's "helped" anyone other than herself.

gattocattivo · 18/05/2023 14:10

100% this. Privileged grammar school girl banging on about poverty while fleecing people for money. Can't understand how anyone falls for her lies.

PollyDarton1 · 18/05/2023 14:12

Even if her mental health was in the pits (and I don't necessarily think it's as bad as she claims because it's often a get out clause for her when under criticism), mental health doesn't excuse you from the kind of manipulative behaviour JM has engaged in for years.

She's perfectly gleeful when she has something or someone to exploit - whether justified or not (Lee Anderson, Katie Hopkins) and quite willing to put her voice behind derogatory tweets, not to mention accusations. It's just when other people rightly call out her bullshit it's somehow deplorable and she reverts to victim status.

I am sure many of us have mental health struggles and don't engage in harmful, frankly contradictory coping mechanisms such as social media. JM has the power to shut this all out and focus on what she claims to really want, but time and time chooses the provocative, reactionary option.

HermioneWeasley · 18/05/2023 14:17

Was going to say very similar @PollyDarton1

it she has poor mental health, it isn’t a shield from legitimate criticism

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 18/05/2023 14:34

If you have poor mental health and know you can be emotionally fragile, isn’t SM, and particularly Twitter, the worst place to “live”?
I know her view is that she refuses to be bullied, but if you choose to and want make confrontational and controversial statements in an open arena, you’re inevitably going to get those who want to take you down as much as those who stroke your ego. That’s what happens on an open forum. Not everyone is going to tell you what a wonderful human being you are.

To use a cooking analogy, if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Dangeliss · 18/05/2023 14:49

It was the "make an egg ring out of an old tuna can" that got me...

She's utterly bizarre. Lots of irregularities and lack or reporting re: where the money she collects actually goes.

She's the perfect Guardian-reader's poor person - cute, educated, middle-class-coded, but just happens to be short on a bit of cash somehow.

24KaratCucumber · 18/05/2023 14:50

There's little to no evidence she has ever done anything at all worth while that has helped anyone beyond herself.

Over a decade shes claimed to be an activist.
No one can point to anything she's accomplished in that time, all they can point to is claims she's made that are easily disproven.

Meanwhile she takes in between 1500 and 20000 a month of other peoples cash for doing this important activism...

She's a fraud. A liar. A Shyster. A modern day panhandler and she's living a lazy upper middle class lifestyle on the good will and charity of people who are highly unlikely to have an income of over TEN THOUSAND POUNDS a month.

beguilingeyes · 18/05/2023 14:51

I went to a women's event that included her a few years ago and found her obnoxious there. I haven't liked her since then

kethuphouse · 18/05/2023 15:25

She’s a massive attention seeker and also clearly unstable. This combined with social media is a dangerous recipe .
