To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

I’m a natch beaut, the only I thing I do from your list is eyebrows every 3 months.

LysHastighed · 04/05/2023 20:26

A minority of my friends have their nails done but no other woman I know well enough to discuss this with does any of the other things on your list. The majority of my friends don’t even wear makeup (I don’t either).

I wear makeup most day. I was under the impression most women do this these days. 😂🙈 I guess I have always been like this so it not unusual for me. Botox was only recently added as I'm 36.

It also depends what you define as caring about your appearance. I care about my appearance in that I want to look clean, neat and healthy. But I don't care about looking 'beautiful' - I would probably want to do all those things you mentioned if I cared about looking 'beautiful'.

As it stands I do none of those things but I always look perfectly respectable 🤷

HateLongCovid · 04/05/2023 20:31

I think this is a journalist trying for an easy article Confused

Batalax · 04/05/2023 20:31

I have my hair highlighted and I slap on a bit of moisturiser when I remember. That’s it.

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 04/05/2023 20:31

I get my nails done, lashes done and eyebrows done because I’m the complete opposite of high maintenance and am just completely lazy - they mean I can just roll out of bed and whack my (expensively dyed) hair in a messy bun and still walk out the door looking put together. 2 hours every 3 weeks to ensure I save 30minutes every morning.

I wouldn’t do fillers though, or Botox.

Panteranoir · 04/05/2023 20:31

Umm no I don't pump a toxin into my face or have my lips filled. I also don't fake tan. I prefer my nails to be fairly short with no polish.

Doesn't mean I don't care about my appearance, it just means I would prefer to look natural.

Men aren't expected to expend time and money on stuff like this, why is their so much pressure on women to do it? You genuinely think if women aren't doing this kind of stuff they don't care about their appearance? I find that odd and depressing.

Maybe women's bodies are just fine as they are.

ladygindiva · 04/05/2023 20:31

Just to add I'm blessed with plump lips and perfect eyebrows that need no maintenance.

WonderBetty · 04/05/2023 20:31

I pluck my peri induced chin hairs. Does that count?

Spidey66 · 04/05/2023 20:31

I’ve had a couple of facials from your list. I enjoy them, but it’s not something I do regularly.

Of your list i know people who will occasionally have their nails done, and maybe a fake tan prior to summer and/or a holiday.

Ive only one woman to have lip fillers. She looked ridiculous.

Tarantella6 · 04/05/2023 20:31

Botox and lip filler is the point where you tipped into high maintenance imo.

I have my eyebrows threaded fortnightly, I don't bother with the rest but I don't think fake tan and nails are particularly unusual. They are a 'I've made an effort' look though, and that's not directly linked to how much someone cares.

VeggieSalsa · 04/05/2023 20:31

I’ve recently had a pay rise and consciously increased my maintenance levels.

I now get my nails done once a month, eyebrow wax and tint quarterly and hair cut and coloured every 6 months. I probably do a bit more than most of the other women I work with. I’m mid 30s and colleagues are a similar age.

I’d definitely say your routine is more than most and high maintenance.

paulmccartneysbagel · 04/05/2023 20:31

I've never done any of those things and don't plan to. But it is entirely your choice if you want to!

Glencococo · 04/05/2023 20:32

I occasionally get my nails done if it’s a special event or holiday. I also have Botox every six months, that’s about it for treatments. Like pp I wouldn’t say that means I don’t care about my appearance, I wear makeup most days and do my hair. But I focus on exercise and a good diet and I wear nice clothes that fit properly.

AngryPurpleSleepingBag · 04/05/2023 20:32

Nope not any of those neither do my friends

Tarantullah · 04/05/2023 20:32

PiffleIsTakingThePiss · 04/05/2023 20:30

Pure goad. Hardly anybody does all that shit to themselves unless you're Katie Price or some other dreadful plastic person who has zero idea who they really are. YABVVVVVU.

You'd be surprised to be honest, plenty of people have it! Fillers and botox can be subtle enough it's not overly evident and pretty natural looking. I expect people sitting on mumsnet (including me) aren't the target market though. People like KP go overboard so it's super obvious but most people don't.

Batalax · 04/05/2023 20:32

Oh and I do my own eyebrows.

midgemadgemodge · 04/05/2023 20:32

I know someone who gets their nails and facials several times a year

I have botox every 3 months, I don't fake tan too much effort and it always goes streaky. Nails no because I'm not allowed fake nails at work. Eyebrows occasionally I find getting them threaded more painful than needles in my face.

Brefugee · 04/05/2023 20:32

also that's actually nothing to do with self care.
Self-care would be you doing something like meditation and accepting you for yourself and how you look naturally, Maybe some green tea and a good cleansing routine.

Bayleaf25 · 04/05/2023 20:33

YABU

Pseudonamed · 04/05/2023 20:33

Nails every three weeks, botox twice a year, sometimes three times a year. Half head highlights 3/4 times a year as no greys and hitting 50. I apply a light tan once a week and get my lashes and brows tinted and waxed every three months.
Out of my group of friends only one other does the above, the other three barely wear makeup. I like how I look so I will not apologise for spending the money I work hard for on this stuff.

AlltheFs · 04/05/2023 20:33

No. I don’t and none of my friends do either. That sort of false look isn’t part of our set.

If you like it that’s absolutely fine, but it’s certainly not that commonplace.

RealLife101 · 04/05/2023 20:33

I don’t do filler and Botox.
Never have facials.
Have learned to do my own nails really well since the lockdown, so no more manicures, but I do my nails weekly at home.
Dye my hair at home and only get it cut at a salon 3 x a year.
Pluck my eyebrows myself and wax my ‘tache Grin.

I fake tan once a week, too, though. Just makes me feel like I look healthier.

I get a fortnightly pedicure in the summer.

I do lots of ‘self care’ stuff but it’s more along the lines of yoga, early nights, the gym, drinking water and eating healthily, taking vitamins etc. I look after my skin really well and I wear make up and style my hair everyday.

I don’t like feeling like a slave to salons and appointments, and I’m not a fan of tweakments (you can always tell!).

ColdHandsHotHead · 04/05/2023 20:33

No, and the judgement in your phrase 'if they care about their appearance' is offensive.
