To think if you don't like my dogs barking at you get the hell off my drive

I'll start this by saying I am tired and miserable so am in no mood to be reasonable today AT ALL.

I have many dogs. Large dogs. There are dog flaps so they can run in and out as they wish onto the property. I am rural and one of the purposes of the dogs is to alert me to people around, so I aren't bothered by them barking if someone comes to the gate.

The gateway to my drive is set back about 15ft so that I can park the car without having to open the gates and drive in. Its clearly my driveway and separate from the road.

There is this one cyclist who every single time after cycling up the hill stops and pulls into the drive and has a rest. Now he could stop on the other side of the road where there is a public track, or he could cycle for like another 30ft and stop at the entrance to the forest but no he chills in the drive. Every. Single. Time.

The dogs bark at him. He shouts at them to be quite. They obviously ignore him. I used to shout them back in but the last few weeks I haven't bothered because well I'm grumpy.

Today my mum has arrived to visit and the cyclist is yet again in the drive. He's had a bit of a go at her. She's come in mithering at me so I've gone out and told him very rudely that if he doesn't like them barking at him to stop standing on the fucking drive. It got into a bit of a heated discussion before I stormed off. He's going to report me apparently as they are intimidating and its illegal to have a camera and no signs and blah blah blah.

So whilst I might BU to have gone out and created more drama instead of ignoring him AIBU to think if you don't want to be barked at get the fuck off my land?

He’s on your drive so he’s trespassing.
It is not illegal to have a camera on your property as long as it is facing your property which includes the cartilage of your drive.
You do not have to put up signs about cameras as they are on your property facing your property.
If he goes onto your drive again tell him he is trespassing.
You are only allowed on someone’s property if you are visiting, delivering to etc that property or you have a right of way or easement.

No idea who he intends to report you to as he’s the one at fault.

No he's actually on the drive. Not even on the edge but like halfway in the unfenced zone. There is zero way he thinks its public. He does it even if the car is there. He just perchs himself against the car for his drink stop.

Tbh I don't (or didn't) particularly mind him. Its a bit annoying but its a bugger of a hill and whilst I don't understand why he can't cycle a bit further I just eyeroll.

Mum was quite shaken up but it doesn't take much. She got out the car and he started swearing at her and telling her she was breaking the law as dogs can't be intimidating and she better not open the gate because if they touch him he'll sue and just general idiocy. Then she came in all flustered and started on me. So I stomped out and here we are. Shrug.

So he was abusive to your mum? Hasn't got a leg to stand on, has he?

@SorePaw some of the dog squad :)

Oh blimey. They're lovely. I adore German Shepherds

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/05/2023 11:02

What a prick.Id get a CCTV sign and Dogs running free sign if you can be arsed

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/05/2023 11:02

Gorgeous dogs btw

HipHipCimorene · 01/05/2023 11:02

If you have recordings from your cameras phone the police and send the recordings.

mixedrecycling · 01/05/2023 11:03

Gorgeous dogs! DDog is a lot smaller and a bit of a scaredy-cat of a dog, and we are in a city. Still barks when someone comes into the front garden! Quite rightly, it's her job to alert us and she takes it seriously (I wouldn't rely on her to attack anyone threatening, though, but alerting is something she can do, and does!)

TheNine · 01/05/2023 11:05

I loathe being barked at by dogs and jumped onto the thread to give a YABU, but seeing this is happening ON YOUR OWN DRIVE of course it’s a massive YANBU! What a total and utter bellend, he deserves a bite let alone a bark! What did he say to your mum, as she entered your property as an invited visitor?

Comedycook · 01/05/2023 11:06

This is difficult.

Cyclists and dog owners? Can't decide which I dislike the most....

Annoyingwurringnoise · 01/05/2023 11:06

They can’t be that intimidating if he continues to stop there. Knob end.

MumofTwins234 · 01/05/2023 11:06

Your dogs are gorgeous.

Let him report you to the police for breaking an imaginary law that he has made up. They'll laugh at him.

TheNine · 01/05/2023 11:07

Sorry, just read your update! If he swore at her I don’t think it would be at all unreasonable to report him to the police.

Giggorata · 01/05/2023 11:07

Beautiful dogs.
One of mine is a European Shepherd breed, and like all of the big shepherds, she is a watchdog and a guard dog, very suspicious and protective. That is their job. These days, in rural areas, we need that.
This cyclist is trying it on, the entitled twat. None of what he says is valid and he is trespassing.
He has now added insult to injury by bullying your mother, an older woman.
Fuck him off with impunity.
Actually, I would be tempted to have the dogs free range, or perhaps just one on a chain at the entrance for a short period, until he got the message.

Inthesamesinkingboat · 01/05/2023 11:09

Do you have a community police office if not I’d use the non emergency line and just say that you’d like to report and ongoing issue with one individual who keeps trespassing on your land, has been shouting at your animals family and it has now escalated into them being abusive to you. I’d ask the police if they can keep a record and if the situation escalates if they would be willing to come out.

I wouldn’t expect them to come out I would just want them to start keeping a log. I would then update them if it happens again. (Or if he does something stupid)

SquirrellyTheSquirrel · 01/05/2023 11:10

Remove the dog issue for a moment.

A man came onto your property and verbally abused your mother? I’d be ringing the police.

treespouse · 01/05/2023 11:11

Oh OP. Don't you know, he's a Man In Lycra. And much like other MILs, he's always right Grin

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2023 11:12

The dogs are divine.

The bloke is a knob.

Not really. This isn't about who or what anyone 'likes'.

SmallFerret · 01/05/2023 11:15

It got into a bit of a heated discussion before I stormed off. He's going to report me apparently as they are intimidating and its illegal to have a camera and no signs and blah blah blah.

He probably expected you to kowtow to his aggression, & his tiny mind got blown by your refusal to brook his nonsense so it's unlikely he'll be back.
If he stupid enough to repeat his offence:

"Fuck off mate, my cameras caught you in the act of intimidating my mother, so please report me so that police can identify you & give you a warning.
btw, my gates aren't always securely locked, so it's wise not to wind my pack of dogs up by arsing about on my property. Oh, I see you haven't fucked off yet, are you fucking off now, or shalI call the cops myself?"

LaviniasBigBloomers · 01/05/2023 11:16

To be fair, if he's suddenly realised your mum is going to open the gate and he's been deliberately provoking a pack of dogs (because that's what he's doing standing on their territory, any fool knows that) I can understand why he's taken fright and shouted at your mum. That's all on him though. God sakes, I live in a town and expect my dog to bark when there's someone on my drive (DP is away a lot).

historygeek12 · 01/05/2023 11:17

Gorgeous dogs :) just doing their job

Gwenhwyfar · 01/05/2023 11:19

YABU. What about the postman or anyone else whose job it is to be on your drive?

Namechange666 · 01/05/2023 11:21

Can you make it so he can't stop on your land at all? Would it be too much to fence it off? Obviously I have no idea of your expenses sorry.

FictionalCharacter · 01/05/2023 11:22

So he comes onto your property every time he passes, leans on your car while he has a drink, tries to shush your dogs, shouts at your mother, and he thinks he has reason to call the police on you?
He’s one of those MN husbands/partners isn’t he - the ones who spend all their time and family money on his “hobby” and do nothing with their kids or around the house. And drop their stinky cycling gear on the floor for their wife to pick up and wash.
May his saddle give him blisters in bad places and may his sweat rash cause mighty discomfort to his nethers.

ItsHardknocklife · 01/05/2023 11:24

I have 2 pretty massive labrotties and I live in a city they will still bark if someone comes into the front garden! They are giant softies but protective that's what these dogs are meant to be like! He shouldn't be on your land ans swearing at your mum is totally unacceptable! If that had been me I would of had a lot to say to him.
