To think if you don't like my dogs barking at you get the hell off my drive

I'll start this by saying I am tired and miserable so am in no mood to be reasonable today AT ALL.

I have many dogs. Large dogs. There are dog flaps so they can run in and out as they wish onto the property. I am rural and one of the purposes of the dogs is to alert me to people around, so I aren't bothered by them barking if someone comes to the gate.

The gateway to my drive is set back about 15ft so that I can park the car without having to open the gates and drive in. Its clearly my driveway and separate from the road.

There is this one cyclist who every single time after cycling up the hill stops and pulls into the drive and has a rest. Now he could stop on the other side of the road where there is a public track, or he could cycle for like another 30ft and stop at the entrance to the forest but no he chills in the drive. Every. Single. Time.

The dogs bark at him. He shouts at them to be quite. They obviously ignore him. I used to shout them back in but the last few weeks I haven't bothered because well I'm grumpy.

Today my mum has arrived to visit and the cyclist is yet again in the drive. He's had a bit of a go at her. She's come in mithering at me so I've gone out and told him very rudely that if he doesn't like them barking at him to stop standing on the fucking drive. It got into a bit of a heated discussion before I stormed off. He's going to report me apparently as they are intimidating and its illegal to have a camera and no signs and blah blah blah.

So whilst I might BU to have gone out and created more drama instead of ignoring him AIBU to think if you don't want to be barked at get the fuck off my land?

I agree with you completely. It's very common knowledge in practice for people in rural areas to have dogs on their land. And they will act as dogs do. As long as they pose no threat to anyone and are safely contained by a fence so they can't run loose into the main road then there is no problem.

Is he actually stopping ON your drive and not just on the road near it? As he shouldn't be using your private property as a rest area.

I'm presuming after today he won't do that again!

electriclight · 01/05/2023 09:39

YANBU. I wouldn't mind him pausing on the drive for a breather after a big hill. But ridiculous to then complain about your dogs doing their job and alerting you to his presence.

I am not sure on the law regarding camera use but I don't think you need signs to have cameras covering your own land in the uk. People with Ring doorbells don't have signs at their gates.

He's an idiot. Once he calms down from the confrontation he'll realise he doesn't have a leg to stand on. He's just embarrassed that he now knows you could see him on your drive every time he used it.

jeaux90 · 01/05/2023 09:39

Not wrong OP. The cyclist sounds like an entitled asshat

Wilkolampshade · 01/05/2023 09:40

Nah, he's just a cunt. Ignore.

Ocularpatdown · 01/05/2023 09:40

Cheeky fucker cyclist. I'd make sure all dogs where out there barking at him every time he stops at your drive. Hopefully he takes the hint.

Eggseggseverywhere · 01/05/2023 09:41

I work rural. They have ddogs.. A rambler actually reached his arm over a high fence to try and sort of shush shush one of the ddogs! I asked if he was right handed... and possibly not a good idea if he was... He stood looking puzzled. I just went in and left him to it.
Idiots I tell you.

Clymene · 01/05/2023 09:41

Worra knob. Your dogs are fine.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/05/2023 09:41

If he knows there are dogs there, why does he keep stopping? He's either a bit dumb or deliberately trying to get a reaction

Grumpi · 01/05/2023 09:41

100% totally agree!

the cheeky fucker. I would have done exactly the same OP, you’re not wrong.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 01/05/2023 09:43

Does he always stop around the same time of day? I'd be very tempted to block the driveway with massive dog statues and a sign that says "Fuck off my private property shouty cycling man" And perhaps a motion activated sprinkler or two.

littleripper · 01/05/2023 09:43

He's an entitled twat that won't be reporting you anywhere. I got a lecture about my sheep being out on my private lane and apparently in a cyclists way yesterday. What teh fuck is the matter with them?

BruceAndNosh · 01/05/2023 09:43

What sort of "had a go at your mum" was it?
I wouldn't have a problem with him stopping there as long as HE didn't have a problem with the barking

BeetleBailey · 01/05/2023 09:46

I cycle

He's being a twat

Theluggage15 · 01/05/2023 09:48

If the police took any interest, which I doubt, it would be to tell him to stop standing on your property. Noisy dogs are a good deterrent to thieves.

mintbiscuit · 01/05/2023 09:49

Sorry OP, but chuckling at the image of your mum ‘mithering’!

But you are totally right. He is a dick.

Treacletoots · 01/05/2023 09:53

Second the water sprinkler

SlipSlidinAway · 01/05/2023 09:53

He's parking on your drive and complaining about your dogs alerting you to his presence?! What a dick.

We live rurally and our dogs bark at anyone coming to the gate - or having the temerity to walk past! I've no intention of trying to stop them - I want people to know they're there.

Honestly I wouldn't stand outside anyone's house and not expect resident dogs to bark at me!

LuluCurl · 01/05/2023 09:53

Continue to ignore him and let the dogs bark. He’s an idiot.

Anyone visiting my house would have told him to fuck off.

LisaD1 · 01/05/2023 09:55

Can you park your car where he stops for a few days and maybe he will get the hint? Cheeky fucker.

we have dogs who bark when people come to the door, I had someone trying to sell me some shit and asked me to shut them up so I could listen to him 😂

TulipCat · 01/05/2023 09:59

He sounds like an arse. If I stopped on someone's driveway and their dogs barked then I wouldn't stop there again. Does he think it's public land? He needs correcting if so.

Ha. Our dogs are great for getting rid of randoms at the door. They bark so loud that anyone trying to sell anything gives up.

gelatogina · 01/05/2023 10:00

He is a total CF!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2023 10:01

YANBU. Wtf is his problem if your dogs are behind a gate on your property barking at him safely on the other side of the gate but also on your property?

On cameras - I've not read this in full, but afaik they're fine so long as they only cover your property, not neighbours or public areas.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/05/2023 10:02

Honestly, don’t you know? He’s a male cyclist. He owns the road!

YANBU.

Hope your mom is ok

SorePaw · 01/05/2023 10:07

He's an idiot, it's YOUR driveway, if he doesn't like YOUR dogs barking, he needs to stay off YOUR driveway.

have you tried exposing that like he's a 3 year old.

Good Luck to him 'reporting' I've no idea who he thinks is going to support his view!

any chance of a photo of your lovely dogs? I LOVE big woofy dogs!!
