Asking someone twice a week to-
Get up at 5.45AM
Walk for 40 minutes and then a 20 minute bus journey to workplace.
Work for 9 hours on feet all day but have an hours lunch.
40 minutes walk home and 20 minute bus journey back.

Person has autoimmune diseases also but they are well controlled. Aibu to say this isn't too much?

Wouldn’t be looking forward to those days of the week, that’s for sure.

thelongroad · 26/04/2023 17:16

I'd not be doing that and I have no issues as such.
The working day is ok although I personally think 9 hours on your feet is too much. No way would I be walking 40 mins and then getting a bus. Nope.

Do you have chronic illnesses?

Yes I’ve got chronic pancreatitis and on multiple pain meds per day (and had multiple surgeries)

RattlewhenIwalk · 26/04/2023 17:21

That'd be hard going even for two if you have an auto immune condition. I have and my 8.5 days WFH are hard enough.

You're being a bit hard on him. Could he not get something closer to home spread out over more days?

8.5 hour days

If he says it's too much, it's too much.

It's not your decision to make.

FlyingCherries · 26/04/2023 18:17

It’ll probably push him into flare ups. It’s too much and he knows it, so v unsympathetic of you to push it. Unless you’re in dire financial straits to the point where you’re too stressed to think properly?

Walkbyall · 26/04/2023 18:20

The work day is not the issue. The employee’s choices are.. job and commute.

Stravaig · 26/04/2023 18:23

From what I know of RA, it's a slow and painful start to the day, so 5:45am up, 40 minute walk, and 20 minute bus is already a problem, even before the 8 hours on feet workday plus repeat travel. The level of medication required to make the day possible would be extremely aggressive on the body.

With any chronic illness, even when well-managed, the time outside home comfort zone is relevant. You describe a minimum of 11 hours for your DH, more with work or transport delays. That's also a problem.

With UC, surely it would be a nightmare to manage a 40 minute walk, 20 minute bus ride, waiting around at bus stops during a flare up - which a stressful 11 hour day would be likely to trigger.

I'm a long Covid person, and I'd be done for the day after the hour journey to work. Turning around and getting home again would be a challenge! I agree with pp who've said if DH is reluctant he's likely massively downplaying how unmanageable this would be.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/04/2023 18:29

That would be too much for me and I haven't got an autoimmune disorder.

40 min walk twice a day is nothing - 4 year old children can do that. (It's a sign how worryingly sedentary our society has become that so many people think it's a lot of walking). 9 hours on your feet is tiring though. But still fine for a healthy adult. It's the diseases that are the issue.

40 minute walking (x2) is fine but where it adds 80 minutes onto a commute and a 9 hour working day is the issue.

WhatNoRaisins · 26/04/2023 18:57

I'd be happy to do a 40 minutes walk. I'd be happy to get a bus. I wouldn't be happy to do both. Too much hassle, I'd look for something else.

thelongroad · 28/04/2023 20:32

@SnackSizeRaisin I wouldn't have the time for 40mins of walking plus a 20 min bus ride on top of working 9 hours. Plus, depending on where you're walking and what the weather's like, it might just be bloody miserable.
