Would you say this is standard for work day ?

TinaTeaspoons · 26/04/2023 12:20

Asking someone twice a week to-
Get up at 5.45AM
Walk for 40 minutes and then a 20 minute bus journey to workplace.
Work for 9 hours on feet all day but have an hours lunch.
40 minutes walk home and 20 minute bus journey back.

Person has autoimmune diseases also but they are well controlled. Aibu to say this isn't too much?

Movinghouseatlast · 26/04/2023 12:39

I wouldn't want to do that personally, depends how much I needed the money though.

Comefromaway · 26/04/2023 12:41

I think that is too much for someone with an auto immune disease, even if well controlled.

Hellocatshome · 26/04/2023 12:43

If its for a job that could lead onto something else then maybe he could give it a go and see how it goes rather than dismiss it straight away. If its for a minimum wage dead end job then presumably he can get something closer, unless you live in the middle of nowhere and every job is going to entail the same sort of commute.

Youheshetheysaid · 26/04/2023 12:43

What is the auto immune disease though?

losingmymarblesagain · 26/04/2023 12:43

I have what would probably be considered well controlled chronic illness and I couldn't do that. He'd know better than you.

Taptap2 · 26/04/2023 12:44

How old is your DH? I could have done it when under 40, touch and go 40-50 but definitely not over 50 my autom immune disease would flare up. Currently working from the sofa as in the middle of a flare. A lot of auto immune diseases lead to painful feet.

niknakniknak · 26/04/2023 12:45

DH has an autoimmune disease (type 1 diabetes), he would do that yes, but not if it was full time. He does have well controlled diabetes though and no other health issues.
Second the idea of a folding bike, Bromptons are the best but pricey.

WinterofOurDiscountTentz · 26/04/2023 12:45

TinaTeaspoons · 26/04/2023 12:31

It's DH. Said it would be too much for him but I think it would be ok as just 2 days that he would need to do this.

It would be too much for me, for sure. I don't think you get to tell him that he needs to do it if he thinks he's unable to. That's a really long day and a lot of physical activity.

SpringleDingle · 26/04/2023 12:46

It would be too much for me. I have ME which means I get tired easily. I’d say it depends on the impact of his autoimmune. If he finds he is very tired then this will likely be too much. I’d take a taxi to skip the 40 min walk and get up for 6am.

goingtotown · 26/04/2023 12:47

OP Could he cycle to work? A 20 minute bus journey here is 3.5 miles.

Daffodilwoman · 26/04/2023 12:47

This is similar to what dh does. He works 9 hour shifts and doesn’t sit down- at all except on his lunch break. They work stood up. If he didn’t have the car then the walk and travel would be him too. I walk 1.5 miles to work and I’m in my 50s. I do that so dh can have the car as we cannot afford 2 cars even though we both work.
Dh works full time too so I’d say unless your dh is over 65 then it’s fine.

WandaWonder · 26/04/2023 12:48

So someone is asked to do a job they they are employed to do

I don't get the issue?

Phoebo · 26/04/2023 12:48

I don't think we can make an informed comment unless we also have an auto immune disease and exactly the same problems health wise surely?

worktired · 26/04/2023 12:49

It's very individual. I have an autoimmune condition and a day like that would floor me.

Youheshetheysaid · 26/04/2023 12:50

Op you have posted dozens and dozens of times about your DH’s very serious conditions and say he has chronic fatigue, contact diarrhoea, sensitive to the heat and DH is on medication, heavy stuff. It means he can now walk (he couldn't before without severe pain ) but he still struggles at times especially now the colder weather has began to show.

So 40 mins walks there and back does sound just a touch ambitious

Nordicrain · 26/04/2023 12:50

But surely the employer isn't asking this person to do this? It's what they have to do to get to work? If it's not suitable for them (which I imagine it owuldn't be for many in the same shoes) it is up to the employee to either (1) request flexible working is possible in the role (2) move closer/ get a car or (3) find another job.

TedMullins · 26/04/2023 12:50

YABU. I couldn’t hack this and I wouldn’t do it. I have a chronic illness and it would wipe me out for the next couple of days.

Youheshetheysaid · 26/04/2023 12:51

The op on another thread

DH has rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis and being tested for osteoarthritis as well.

It's OP telling her husband to do it.

I'd assume DH has more of an idea as to whether he can cope with it than you do? Or are you thinking he is work shy? Does he manage similar levels of activity out of work?

JeepersCreeperrs · 26/04/2023 12:54

What’s the disease?

if it’s coeliac disease it’s irrelevant. If it’s MS, or RA or the like then YABU.

I wouldn’t want to walk 40 minutes to then be on my feet all day and then have the walk back again tbh.

Then definitely unreasonable. RA depending on how well managed it is is extremely painful and exhausting. Physical activity is hard work.

TinyRebellion · 26/04/2023 12:55

Christ. I have a chronic illness which is supposedly well managed and I work 3 days in a busy job on my feet all day. I get to sit down for 30 mins at lunch. Wipes me out for the next couple of days. There is just no way, with the best will in the world, that I could do what you are proposing your DH does.

In that case yes OP, you are being wildly unreasonable. He needs to look for a different job.

TinaTeaspoons · 26/04/2023 13:02

I don't post constantly about my DH and his conditions.

Yes, RA and UC but he gets around a lot easier now. He also doesn't need the toilet constantly unless of course he is flaring up. Also under 40.
In terms of activity outside of work, he gets tired easily but paces himself.
I do think these 2 days are do able but obviously I can't make him do it.
