To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

I was raised Catholic but am now Protestant. There just doesn't seem to be the same reverence for God's name in Catholicism, in.my experience. My dad goes to Mass every week and considers himself a practising Catholic, but responds to everything with 'Jesus Christ!' or 'Christ almighty!'. One day I asked him why he used Jesus's name as a swear word, out of interest, but he didn't have an answer. Lots of people say "My Catholic granny says 'Jesus' all the time, so it must be ok' but for me, I wouldn't substitute the name of anyone I loved for a swear word.

If someone disagreed with your belief that your child is beautiful by saying your child is ugly, you'd throw a fit... but somehow it's OK for you to disagree with their belief by saying their deities name in vain.

Both are each individual's personal truth.

It is a basic rule, not a difficult one... Don't use a 'Jesus' in a negative way around people that believe in him, yet somehow that is your 'right'.

No, it's just manners.

How do you know people believe in Jesus? I might make an assumption about a colleague and think they’re a Christian but I could well be wrong. I could equally make the same assumption about a colleague of another religion. Of course I try not to blaspheme at work because it’s rude and inappropriate.

Mutabiliss · 25/04/2023 20:49

You cannot police people's language to obey a religion most of us don't believe in. I don't suppose most people intend to offend, they're just expressions everyone grows up hearing and are part of the everyday language of the British Isles.

Anyway. If I can't say 'oh my god' because it's too offensive, I'll switch to 'cuntin' 'ell', a phrase much beloved of my very sweary uncle 😂

MasterBeth · 25/04/2023 20:49

Jesus, you should find it in your heart to forgive us.

In any post about religion good old Monty makes a visit!

Greensleeves · 25/04/2023 20:50

That's just what happens when a religion establishes a monopoly over a region's culture/art/music/language/politics, maintains it for hundreds of years through violence and indoctrination, and is then gradually outgrown and marginalised. The language pertaining to Christianity is, whether we like it or not (we don't), embedded in our vernacular. Of course people are going to use it. You have no more right to be offended by that than I do to still be angry that my ancestors were forced to practice a state religion on pain of torture and death.

Does it really matter if someone writes or types this?

This reminds me of pathetic people I hear who sometimes say “oh my days” not necessarily because they want to not use “god” but because they think they’re being religious and woke by not saying god! I heard some teenage girls laughing and not using “omg” and then one turned and said to the others “actually your sister does say “oh my god”” and then they burst into laughter because they realised how ridiculous they were being.

Those girls don’t pathetic at all.

The pathetic people are those who think they’re clever by insulting someone who lived thousands of years ago.

Saniflo · 25/04/2023 20:51

Why do your rights as a Christian trump mine as an atheist? I don't believe in all that bullshit and I am entitled to blaspheme if I want. How entitled to expect everyone to pander to your delusions. Jesus fucking Christ the world's gone crazy.

I prefer that one myself. And bollox is a nicely satisfying one.

MinervaSaidThar · 25/04/2023 20:52

@Saniflo she didn’t say her rights trump yours 🙄. Reading comprehension is poor amongst the atheists.

DownNative · 25/04/2023 20:43

And how would you measure that?! 😵‍💫

I'd say it's very similar across the UK and Republic of Ireland....it's so common.

It’s definitely said more in Ireland.

And in far more creative ways than just the ‘oh my God’, ‘Jesus (H / fucking, etc) Christ’ that you hear in the UK.

SemperIdem · 25/04/2023 20:52

Do people of other faiths say “oh my god”, “Jesus Christ” etc?

I’ve never heard anyone other than Christian or at least culturally Christian backgrounds, use those phrases.

Botw1 · 25/04/2023 20:52

@MinervaSaidThar

Who is being insulted?

Who lived thousands of years ago?

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 25/04/2023 20:53

Most of us were raised in a semi-Christian society, that's why it's normal to us. Like Christmas/easter. It's not the same as going out of your way to use a god from another religion. Yabu

DaisyDieter · 25/04/2023 20:53

Jesus Christ, OP, what in the bloody Jesus do you expect me to say instead?

SargentSagittarius · 25/04/2023 20:54

Saniflo · 25/04/2023 20:51

Calm down, dear.

I’m not about to change my language, but even I can see the OP’s only asking. She’s not demanding. And she didn’t say anything about ‘rights’. Grin

pictoosh · 25/04/2023 20:54

" I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions."

Highly. Offensive.

If you're going to be highly offended by blasphemy, you're on the wrong fucking forum. This place is not for you.

Poopoolittlekitten · 25/04/2023 20:55

Jesus Christ and all his carpenter friends! While I do try NOT to say it in front of someone I know who’s Christian and the type of.who’s o really offended by it I don’t extend that to anon forums and people who I know won’t give a damn for the most part …

YoBeaches · 25/04/2023 20:55

The reason we don't get Mohammed and Allah is because they are not the powers of our cultural religion. You'll find that those religions or cultures don't references Jesus Christ in their language much.

The reason it's used so much is because once upon a time people did actually say things like "Jesus Christ please save us" or "Blessed Mary please pray for us" "Dear God please forgive us" as examples of when an exclamation was needed due to the situation.

Which over the years simply became popularised as "Jesus Christ" or "Oh Mu God" or "bloody hell" or "dear god!" because it's still a relevant exclamation in a Christian society, but modernised with less focus on the element of prayer it's self. partially because religion has become a more private affair and partially because it's take up is waning.

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 20:55

It is a basic rule, not a difficult one... Don't use a 'Jesus' in a negative way around people that believe in him, yet somehow that is your 'right'.

As has been repeatedly pointed out, many, many Christians use 'Jesus' and/or 'God' that way themselves (including the OP), so why shouldn't anyone else?

BananaCocktails · 25/04/2023 20:56

@Putyourdamnshoeson I bet you wouldn’t say Mohammed wept though would you?

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 25/04/2023 20:56

This reminds me of growing up and visiting religious relatives. Not being allowed to speak freely for fear of upsetting anyone while they showed no consideration whatsoever for anyone else.

So no, I won’t police my language to avoid upsetting anyone because of whatever book they choose to believe in.

ItsCalledAConversation · 25/04/2023 20:56

As a Christian, for all the things you could be worried about, focusing on this really is fiddling while Rome burns.
