To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey...

This is my favorite saying, I must say it 10 times a day.

@Sortyourlifeout sorry but it’s not my role in life to avoid offending others. You choose to take offence. I’ll crack on.

Am I allowed Jeez?
What about OMG?

Actually, I don't care. I'll say what I like, regardless of whether it offends followers of the weird culty religion I'm glad to have escaped.

Jeez has never been short for Jesus… has it?

BubziOwl · 25/04/2023 20:57

We live in a historically Christian country, most of our culture is steeped in Christianity if you look close enough. It makes sense that people in this country use phrases associated with Christianity.

ItsCalledAConversation · 25/04/2023 20:56

As a Christian, for all the things you could be worried about, focusing on this really is fiddling while Rome burns.

Weelll, it’s mumsnet and lots of people are making posts about ‘first world problems’ it doesn’t mean they aren’t also deeply worried about other realities.

BMW6 · 25/04/2023 21:00

Well the historical person who we reference as "Jesus" wouldn't recognise that as relating in any way to his name, so why would any offence be taken?

You may as well say Bob.

labamba007 · 25/04/2023 21:01

I'm assuming the reason people don't say 'oh my Muhammad' is because the UK's dominant religion is Christianity? Not some conspiracy to single out Christians.

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 20:28

I actually can't believe that you (a person who are religious and actually think it's offensive to say it), 'take the Lord's name in vain' yourself, yet you start a thread to lecture those who don't consider it offensive for doing exactly the same thing as you!

This! OP you're not helping with the perception that religion often involves large dollops of hypocrisy I'm afraid 😬

You are someone who does believe and you use the phrase 'oh my god' thoughtlessly sometimes, by your own admission.

Yet you've started a thread criticising people who don't even believe for using a phrase about a figure from your religion.

The hypocrisy is real with this one I'm afraid!

Of course it is.

How do you know people believe in Jesus? I might make an assumption about a colleague and think they’re a Christian but I could well be wrong. I could equally make the same assumption about a colleague of another religion. Of course I try not to blaspheme at work because it’s rude and inappropriate.

To be honest, I'm one that says these phrases a lot... I'm not preaching at all, just trying to put it in 'their' perspective.

I guess the rule of thumb (I bet that phrase will be removed from society shortly given its origins!!!), is don't use religiously-originating words in negative-connotation ways... or at least, if it is brought to your attention, don't say "tough, it's my right".

Apologies for using the ugly child comparison, it's just a good parallel. To you, your child is your world, and you wouldn't want 'ugly' used to describe them, just as they wouldn't want negative connotations (Jesus Christ! when stubbing your toe for example) around them...

Liveandsmile · 25/04/2023 21:02

You’ll find people really rude on here about Christianity, they wouldn’t be about any other religion. Strange when we are a Christian country .. and no it’s not about the church or any of that stuff. The religion is the bible, God, Jesus. Not about those that had any role in corruption in the church or any of those morally bankrupt that do heinous acts under the cover of Christianity.

Kiwisarenotjustfruit · 25/04/2023 21:02

What about all the euphemisms for blasphemes? How do you feel about those?
Oh My Goodness

BellePeppa · 25/04/2023 21:03

Can they say Heyzeus instead? I like saying it. It was a big no no when I was growing up Catholic but now I’m an athiest I enjoy the rebellion.

PurpleBugz · 25/04/2023 21:04

I think it's easy to slip and say it and I also think it's very ignorant to intentionally say something you know someone finds offensive just because you don't agree with their beliefs and want to cause offence. Disagreeing can be done civilly.

Op it used to bother me too. But people mostly do it without thinking or meaning offence. Asking people to consider how offensive it is to you gets the reaction you see here. I find it helpful to remind myself god can take it and it's not for me to judge others anyway. Concentrate on not doing it yourself because as you have found when you hear it alot you find it slips out yourself. It's your challenge for yourself not a challenge to change others. It's not like spreading the word - people know they just don't care- turn the other cheek

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:25

But people don't. Thats my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.

That you notice OP.

Quite narrow minded and pot , kettle black springs to mind, you can’t be annoyed when you’ve just admitted that you do this also.

In Turkey it’s quite common for Turkish folk to say Allah Allah when they’ve been shocked/frightened or even being annoyed at someone.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 25/04/2023 21:04

Exclaiming Mohammed doesn’t have the same ring to it as a good Jeeeeesus though!

JaneJeffer · 25/04/2023 21:04

What do people mean when they say I am a Christian? Do you belong to a particular church or are you a hedge Christian?

Yes, it's short for Jesus.

Whether you like it or not

PickoftheMix · 25/04/2023 21:05

I agree people should be kind to each other, but someone doesn't burst into flames when they feel offended by something! We live in a world where there are so many different beliefs/cultures/people, everyone will be offended by something.

I'm a mix of pagan/wiccan. If I was offended by everything people said, especially Christians, I'd constantly have cats bum mouth!

Mouldyfoodhelp · 25/04/2023 21:05

I personally don't see an issue of it as I don't hold too much faith in religion, as to why other gods and the like aren't used I'd imagine its lack of familiarity. Most people that you're likely to have come into contact with, will have heard Jesus Christ etc as its been the dominant religion around so it would seem unnatural to force say Allah or Mohammad into a phrase you've said for 20,30,40 years
