To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

But your respect involves policing others language. I think women are done with that. Islam is maybe because when people do they get attacked, eg the magazine in Paris.

I believe (could be wrong) that Oh my God was made popular by the sitcom Friends. As per your post, you would never have them saying Oh my Mohammed would you!

You are wrong. People were saying 'Oh my God' long, long before the 1990s 😄

CaptainCorriganIsFlying · 25/04/2023 20:38

For the love of Christ up on the crucifix enjoying the view, you need to realise you don’t get to censor people, OP.

I can take it! ☺️

Don’t ever go to Ireland, OP.

Many Christians there, and taking the Lord’s name in vain is part of the vocab.

Well done on having a wee vent about this, but I don’t think you’re going to change many hearts and/or minds….

I suspect you are right. But if it's got people thinking about what is offensive to people then I'm not sorry that I started this thread.

I've been to Ireland. And I have some Irish Catholic friends who blaspheme alot. I find it very interesting given what we are taught in the Bible 🤪

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 25/04/2023 20:39

My elderly Jewish boss used say “my godfathers” rather than blaspheme.

I’m so used to saying OMG or whatever it is and won’t change any time soon.

orangegato · 25/04/2023 20:39

Offence is taken, not given.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/04/2023 20:40

I prefer Jesus Christ with Fucking thrown in the middle. People's religious persuasions don't concern me.

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 25/04/2023 20:40

It tends to be "Jesus Titty Fucking Christ" a la Team America in our house 😂 sorry!

Allblackeverythingalways · 25/04/2023 20:40

Jesus fucking christ is my current go to. I only change my language around children.
Not overly sensitive adults with imaginary friends.

Certain ppl hate the word ‘cunt’ but I see it used on mumsnet on a regular basis. Imo it is far worse than any such phrases as ‘Jesus’ or ‘Christ’ or a combo of both.

Softsoftsleep · 25/04/2023 20:41

I'm a Christian and I hate it too. I tend to just let it go over my head as much as I can. I've noticed that lots of people here take great glee in saying it when they know some people find it offensive, however. Whatever.

I'm with you OP.

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 20:41

Do Jewish people blaspheme by saying Oh my moschiash? (Spelling?).

Seas164 · 25/04/2023 20:41

I'm guilty of that sometimes when I'm actually 'speaking' and it just pops out. I feel bad when I say it though.

I hate it when it just pops out. If you tell yourself that everyone that's typed it on Mumsnet also feels similarly contrite as soon as they press POST does that make you feel a bit better?

I personally love a good old swear, anything goes, especially while driving. When my DD was very very small, and not incredibly verbal I did an emergency stop, and she looked up from her board book and shouted from the car seat in the back a perfectly formed JESUSSS CHRIIIIIISTTTT

and I can't imagine where she got it from.

If people started saying “allah on a bike” or similar, would that be ok with the Islamic community?

anyone know?

genuine question btw. I have no issues with calling out Jesus or God 😂 although i do realise many Christian’s think it’s wrong to do so.

what are the rules in Islam? I would think it’s a big no?

if not, why don’t we talk about allah and Buddha in the same way we Jesus Christ?

Muslims would NEVER say ‘Jesus on a bike’. Jesus is revered as a prophet, just like Mohammed.

DownNative · 25/04/2023 20:43

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/04/2023 20:27

I feel like people say "Jesus" MORE in countries that are actually religious. We definitely say it more in Ireland than here in the UK.

And how would you measure that?! 😵‍💫

I'd say it's very similar across the UK and Republic of Ireland....it's so common.

Jesus literally one of the prophets in Islam though, the same as Abraham, Moses and Mohamed

So, whilst Jesus is more commonly referred to as the Messiah in islam, he does exist in islamic texts for all the people trying to make a point that Islam is somehow more protected than Christianity.

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:25

But people don't. Thats my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.

... But they do. In countries where Islam is the dominant religion I've heard all sorts of shouts of things like "yah Allah!" which is the equivalent of "Oh Jesus" or "oh my god".

Christianity is the dominant cultural religion here so of course our language is based around Christianity.

Jesus, you'd think you'd actually educate yourself about stuff like this before mouthing off about it.

British people don't say those words because there is no cultural history to use them.

There is with Jesus christ/omg etc.

They have no special meaning other than an exclamation to most.

If Allah was the cultural exclamation I'd say that too.

SwedishEdith · 25/04/2023 20:44

I love it. So satisfying. If you were brought up to believe it was really wrong to say it, it's so liberating to do so now. It's a sound.

C1N1C · 25/04/2023 20:44

If someone disagreed with your belief that your child is beautiful by saying your child is ugly, you'd throw a fit... but somehow it's OK for you to disagree with their belief by saying their deities name in vain.

Both are each individual's personal truth.

It is a basic rule, not a difficult one... Don't use a 'Jesus' in a negative way around people that believe in him, yet somehow that is your 'right'.

No, it's just manners.

Botw1 · 25/04/2023 20:46

If Christians want people to stop saying Jesus they should stop praying for people and pushing their religion on others

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 25/04/2023 20:46

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:22

Right?
I'm guilty of that sometimes when I'm actually 'speaking' and it just pops out. I feel bad when I say it though.

But to actually type it. Thought (or lack of) has gone into that.

Does it really matter if someone writes or types this?

This reminds me of pathetic people I hear who sometimes say “oh my days” not necessarily because they want to not use “god” but because they think they’re being religious and woke by not saying god! I heard some teenage girls laughing and not using “omg” and then one turned and said to the others “actually your sister does say “oh my god”” and then they burst into laughter because they realised how ridiculous they were being.

Imagine Christian bread Jane in leafy suburbs in Essex with "juicy" on trackies exclaiming "yah Allah"😂. So it's fair to Jesus
