To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Jesus fucking H Christ is my fave.

No, you used it as an intensifying swear-word. There have been a lot of English-speakers who would have been quite religiously offended by that, believing it to be a religious reference, and the reason it's an effective, taboo swear-word is that those people found it offensive.

Ok, fair point. Thanks for pointing it out. I won't use it in future! Or I'll certainly try not to!

Don’t ever go to Ireland, OP.

Many Christians there, and taking the Lord’s name in vain is part of the vocab.

Well done on having a wee vent about this, but I don’t think you’re going to change many hearts and/or minds….

carriedout · 25/04/2023 20:33

Sorry, YABU.

You can't impose your own belief system on other people.

HeadbandOverMyEyes · 25/04/2023 20:33

CheerIeader · 25/04/2023 20:25

At Catholic school in the early nineties, we were told it was a contraction of By Our Lady, meaning Mary.
Not sure that's actually true.

Oh yes, I forgot, that's the other purported etymology.

As I said, I think it's not considered by experts to actually originate in religious terminology, but the true origin almost doesn't matter when it comes to offending religious sensibilities, when for many many years, both the people using it and the people hearing it have believed it to refer to either a) Jesus'/God's blood or b) the Virgin Mary.

And yet OP actually spent the thought and time needed to actually type it out Shock even though someone could've felt very upset about damage to their presumably quite fragile religious beliefs.

Meh. When Christianity is no longer forced upon us in schools I might be inclined to modify my language.

Is it blasphemeing to quote the bible?

'Jesus wept' is John 11 35

Can I say it now?

I guess it’s the intention behind it! I have to admit to having Christian guilt (and some very deep fear) due to an abusive childhood where everything was very mixed up.

CurlewKate · 25/04/2023 20:33

Well, I am an atheist but as I am frequently told I live in a Christian country, I use the swear words/ blasphemies that come from my heritage. I wouldn't dream of using ones from anyone else's heritage. Incidentally, I stopped my children using blasphemous language until they were old enough to decide for themselves whether they wanted to. Not sure the relevance of tcc go at last point!

My old boss from over 30 years ago would always say “Oh Christ!” (Italian American Catholic too) and it’s stuck with me all these years. Sorry OP it’s not meant to be offensive, it’s just a bad habit for me!

I understand this. And thanks for taking the time to explain.

I think it's pretty much the same for a lot of people. It becomes habit!

I thought that the whole intention of the "do not take the Lord's name in vain" was actually, "don't get worked up about petty shit on His behalf, because He certainly doesn't, it's your actual morals that count"?

So maybe worry more about following proper tenets of the faith, rather than the petty shit?

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

I love this.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/04/2023 20:35

I totally agree, OP. Everyone seems to say it and it always makes me cringe. Worst is when kids say it. It's just so disrespectful to people who do believe, and why would you want to disrespect people? Re the fact that Christians say things like Oh my lord, I asked an old lady at church why she said this and she said she was asking for his blessing/ invoking him, so it's not the same as blaspheming. What I really don't understand is why people say OMG etc when they are not religious. I really, really don't understand why they would want to keep mentioning the name of a God or prophet who means nothing to them. My friends who say these names all the time aren't religious. If I asked them to stop I'm sure they would (around me) but I don't want to ask them. But maybe one day I'll ask them why they say it. I suspect they have no idea.

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

In what way is Islam protected? Muslims are so disenfranchised that BoJo who made racist jokes about Muslims became PM.

Muslims suffer much more attacks in the UK than Christians, Jews, Hindus.

YABVU

I'm not policing anyone's language. I'm asking if people could think about others feelings (much as they would with every other part of life).

If people started saying “allah on a bike” or similar, would that be ok with the Islamic community?

anyone know?

genuine question btw. I have no issues with calling out Jesus or God 😂 although i do realise many Christian’s think it’s wrong to do so.

what are the rules in Islam? I would think it’s a big no?

if not, why don’t we talk about allah and Buddha in the same way we Jesus Christ?

Divorcedalongtime · 25/04/2023 20:36

Oh yesss! Growing up in my house blasphemy was worse than cursing, which was also bad.

I don’t think it’s ever been popularised on the tv.

SargentSagittarius · 25/04/2023 20:37

It’s no more or less complicated than, to them, it’s simply an expression to convey shock / surprise, etc.

Soapnutty · 25/04/2023 20:37

I am a Christian and dislike Jesus Christ as an expletive but realise it’s my issue so I don’t use it yet understand it’s meaningless for non Christians so up to them!

bobby81 · 25/04/2023 20:38

I agree OP, it always makes me cringe.
