To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

I like "Christ on a bike!"

Excited101 · 25/04/2023 20:26

If I had it my way, I’d have absolutely nothing to do with any form of religion but here we are with religious schooling and local churches 🤷‍♀️ I say it, I type it, it doesn’t mean anything. How you choose to interpret it is not up to me.

woodhill · 25/04/2023 20:27

@whumpthereitis

Don't think that would go down well somehow

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/04/2023 20:27

I feel like people say "Jesus" MORE in countries that are actually religious. We definitely say it more in Ireland than here in the UK.

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 20:27

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:25

But people don't. Thats my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.

I believe (could be wrong) that Oh my God was made popular by the sitcom Friends. As per your post, you would never have them saying Oh my Mohammed would you!

HeadbandOverMyEyes · 25/04/2023 20:27

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:22

I'm not sure I said it was?

No, you used it as an intensifying swear-word. There have been a lot of English-speakers who would have been quite religiously offended by that, believing it to be a religious reference, and the reason it's an effective, taboo swear-word is that those people found it offensive.

I was raised Catholic and my current church is CoE, and in my experience nobody blasphemes more than Christians! You can't go two minutes without my very Catholic grandma going "Jesus, Mary and Joseph" or "blessed mother Mary" etc!

I'm CofE too. And yes, I've noticed that alot of my Catholic pals throw Jesus' name around too. Which I don't understand either!

I agree. If certain other important religious names were used, there would be uproar. Christianity is bottom of the pile sadly.

Hardly! It is forced upon us in schools. There is barely any escape!

mrlistersgelfbride · 25/04/2023 20:28

Christ on a bicycle is my go to. Usually said whilst driving, so at least most of the time I say it I'm alone.

SunshineGeorgie · 25/04/2023 20:28

I like 'sky fairy'

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 20:28

I actually can't believe that you (a person who are religious and actually think it's offensive to say it), 'take the Lord's name in vain' yourself, yet you start a thread to lecture those who don't consider it offensive for doing exactly the same thing as you!

MissedTheBoatAgainAndAgain · 25/04/2023 20:28

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 20:23

Right? I'm guilty of that sometimes when I'm actually 'speaking' and it just pops out. I feel bad when I say it though.

Well this is a very hypocritical thread then.

This! People in glasshouses and all that OP! Surely written or spoken should be just as bad if you feel that way?

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 20:28

FrownedUpon · 25/04/2023 20:25

By ‘certain others’ you mean Islam?

again, go for it. No one is stopping you. Christianity was the dominant cultural force in the UK, therefore the sociolect will reflect that. There’s no great conspiracy.

itsmylife7 · 25/04/2023 20:28

Jesus Mary mother of God......was my Granny's saying and she was a staunch Irish Catholic...... this was said when us GC were being naughty .

baffledcoconut · 25/04/2023 20:29

I’m afraid I couldn’t care less about religion and will carry on as I was. Christ on a bike is a favourite round here.

TowerRaven7 · 25/04/2023 20:29

My old boss from over 30 years ago would always say “Oh Christ!” (Italian American Catholic too) and it’s stuck with me all these years. Sorry OP it’s not meant to be offensive, it’s just a bad habit for me!

Allblackeverythingalways · 25/04/2023 20:29

I don't generally pay attention to people that try to police my language.

Because swears or blasphemies are only such if we say they are, ie we give them power and meaning.

So it would make no sense to use religious swears in non-religious places.

Sweet baby jebus is my current go to.

Mine is ‘I swear to Lucifer…’ when I’m getting annoyed. E.g ‘I swear to Lucifer I’ll swing for him!’

JuneOsborne · 25/04/2023 20:30

My nan used to say that blasphemy is a victimless crime.

CountlesScreamingArgonauts · 25/04/2023 20:31

Is it blasphemeing to quote the bible?

'Jesus wept' is John 11 35

Can I say it now?

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 20:31

woodhill · 25/04/2023 20:27

@whumpthereitis

Why not? I literally just did it. No one is actually stopping you, that you would prefer to believe they are doesn’t mean it is in fact true.

That’s quite funny ☺️
