Yes, ofc. Why do you even need to ask?

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/04/2023 16:43

Yes. That's ok.

Kay286 · 25/04/2023 16:43

Not even sure why this is a question

Mortimercat · 25/04/2023 16:43

Why are you even asking? 🙄

gentlemum · 25/04/2023 16:43

Totally ok Smile what's the reason you're wondering that it's not?

GreenWheat · 25/04/2023 16:43

Why wouldn't it be? You can also buy your daughter male toys, ones with blue hair or with any other physical trait she herself does not have.

I had one in the Stone Age when I was a child. She was my favourite.

YABU to ask TBH. That's why I voted YABU.
Your medal's in the post... 🙄

We did as she picked it out in the store but then I gave it away. Didn't want to be accused of cultural appropriation.

Capaldifan94 · 25/04/2023 16:46

My v old fashioned DM suggested it might be seen as offensive. God only knows why. She hasn't elaborated.

It never occurred to me that it might be a problem. I'm glad it doesn't seem to be! :)

Is this a joke? How is it cultural appropriation to give your child a range of dolls that are representative of all the people they will meet in life? Barbie's tagline is playing with dolls teaches children to develop empathy. Why don't you want your children to have empathy towards POC?

Seen as offensive by whom? Not anyone whose opinion you value, surely?

moonspiral · 25/04/2023 16:47

Why are you buying it? Who is saying you are unreasonable? As long as you aren't buying it and going LOOK HOW DIFFERENT THIS DOLL IS TO YOUR WHITE ONES and making the doll all about its race then what's the issue?

Yerroblemom1923 · 25/04/2023 16:48

@Whatsthefrequencykenny I think perhaps this is what the OP is concerned about. Is it cultural appropriation?

HighlandDays · 25/04/2023 16:48

My child has a teddy bear and looks nothing like him.

Me too! She was called Mandy and I absolutely loved her.

I think it depends where you live and who is around you.

moonspiral · 25/04/2023 16:49

I'm assuming this is a standard barbie doll or the like yeah?

TheGoogleMum · 25/04/2023 16:49

I think that's fine but I'm white. My daughter plays with black dolls at pre school, I sometimes wonder if I should buy her one for home (she has a couple of white ones)

My white daughter has dolls of various ethnicities, including Moana and Tiana. If you won't allow your daughter too have a non-white doll surely you are teaching her that white is the default and "normal" and there is something wrong with darker skin?

To be fair to the OP, I recently purchased a gorgeous brown baby doll for my niece. Afterwards I did worry about unknowingly upsetting anyone, however online the opinions are all positive! Here's an example of a blog discussing - there are many similar online:

During your search for dolls for your child, you have probably come across black dolls sitting on shelves in stores or have seen some online. You’ve

As long as it is a standard barbie/baby doll the same as the white versions but simply with a different skin colour, of course it is absolutely fine.
An intentionally racist doll like a GW, of course not.
