I'm not really understanding the ire over the OP asking. When we know better, we do better, and if something has given us pause and made us question ourselves, then surely asking for others' perspectives is admirable?

ourflagmeansdeath · 25/04/2023 18:05

Why would that be offensive?? POC children have white dolls all the time.

Thats what I was worried about 😔

you both need to learn what cultural appropriation is.

I think the question you should be asking is does my child want a brown doll.

I never got over my mother getting me a Sindy instead of a Barbie because Sindy had dark hair like me. I didn’t want to play with a doll that looked like me. I love blonde hair.

StrawberryWater · 25/04/2023 18:08

I had one when I was a kid, my son has a few including a couple of dolls in traditional Muslim outfits which were gifted to him in EYFS (he goes to a predominantly Asian school).

Princessfuckingpeach · 25/04/2023 18:12

Did any of you have the argos doll Whitney from the 90s? She had beautiful afro hair and came with hair accessories such as beads and had a brightly coloured dress.

I loved her out of all my dolls, I grew up in a predominantly white area and Whitney and I were given some pretty rude comments.
So we hexed them all and wished terrible plagues on the whole narrow minded shitehole.

Strawberrydelight78 · 25/04/2023 18:17

Nothing wrong with it my white dd preferred ethnic dolls.

Wrongsideofpennines · 25/04/2023 18:17

My child has a black doll. She is her favourite and is usually first choice when asked what toy she wants to bring with her. The hair is definitely afro style too, if you can tell on moulded plastic!

A black mum at a toddler group spotted her with it and told me how pleased she was that a white girl had a black doll. She was pleased it was even an option as it wasn't when she was a child.

A white child owning a black doll is really not what cultural appropriation is...

Exactly.

wibblewobbleball · 25/04/2023 18:19

@ShannonMcFarland that's partly because black children with Downs are less likely to survive past one year old.

MerryMarigold · 25/04/2023 18:20

My sister had a black BOY doll in the early 80s. He even peed out of his penis!

MathsNervous · 25/04/2023 18:21

Needmorelego · 25/04/2023 17:07

@ShannonMcFarland what a strange comment. Down Syndrome isn't skin colour exclusive !

Must admit that comment caught me out. Down Syndrome doesn't discriminate over skin colour last time I checked 🤷

Cosycover · 25/04/2023 18:25

I had a golly when I was little. He was given to me by my West Indian uncle.

Never crossed anyones mind they were racist toys

We had real racism to worry about. Like being woken at first light and having the police smash down the front door and drag uncle or another or all of the male relatives out of the house because there had been a breakin and of course it had to be our family
Or on the very odd occasion we went out, not being allowed into a venue because of our accents or uncle’s skin colour

Of course it's fine my GC have different skin colour dolls.
They've just got the barbie doll in a wheelchair. This was after they'd asked why some people are in wheelchairs, and I explained the many reasons.

cocobongo1 · 25/04/2023 18:27

Strange to ask, it's a positive thing if anything.

Skybluepinky · 25/04/2023 18:28

Strange that u need to ask!
of course it’s ok.

NewNovember · 25/04/2023 18:28

Wenfy · 25/04/2023 16:56

White people buying black dolls is often why they’re more expensive and in shorter supply for black children. But that’s not your problem. You should definitely buy one.

It's actually the opposite less demand means higher cost.
