My husband was ultra sensitive about the same issue when my daughter was given a My Generation doll that was based on darker skin tone. My daughter wanted her because she had a nice outfit and cool puppy.
My husband really thought it was wrong to appropriate a doll that was based on someone else's heritage. My daughter loved her doll .
I'm all for dolls of all sorts of representations being owned by anyone, it's silly to pigeon hole what sort of dolls you're allowed to have (unless they're purposefully offensive like a specific 'G' doll).
