Believing in ghosts

StupidFaces · 24/04/2023 08:34

I used to, now I think it’s ridiculous. People have been trying to prove the existence of ghosts for over 150 years and yet not one scrap of credible evidence to suggest they exist. I wish they did, I’d love it to be real but it just doesn’t make sense for them to exist does it?

Surely if ghosts were real, abattoirs would be haunted to fuck by the ghosts of dead cows? How come nobody ever sees a ghost dressed in trackies and Nike trainers? Why are they only ever dressed in Victorian/medieval clothes etc?

Do people think ghosts of fish haunt the ocean?

For those that do believe … what do you think about the above scenarios?

For those that done believe … would you be happy to spend a night alone in a supposedly haunted castle?

@MedievalMadness you made me laugh!

Another recommendation for the Uncanny podcast, whether you believe or not. For anyone else that’s listened: I don’t understand why even the so called sceptics never seem to consider the possibility that the ‘witnesses’ are lying or delusional rather than all this convoluted: ‘well it could be explained by insert vanishingly unlikely scenario which would result in massive big ghost fest’.

I find it all fascinating

I do believe, but I don't think we're meant to know everything there is to know about the afterlife. If we knew it all as fact, it would affect the way we live our lives here on Earth. Things that matter, wouldn't matter and vice versa. During our physical lives we retain zero or minimal knowledge of what lies beyond this life and that's the way it has to be."

Yes, that's pretty much my take on it all too. That we are spiritual beings who are experiencing a temporary physical existence. I look out at the world, and imagine my whole, physical body disappearing, but "I" would still be there, because "I" am not my body, "I" am a soul (for want of a better word), housed temporarily in a physical body.

I haven't ever seen any apparitions but have had odd things happen. Once I had finished taking a shower (alone in bathroom, door bolted). I drew the shower curtain across and went to step out of the bath, when a pair of tweezers just dropped down from the air above me, right in front of my face. They were previously on the window sill. A few days later the same thing happened again, with an empty toilet roll tube this time, that was in the waste bin. Lots of other strange stuff, that's just two examples. We really don't understand everything that's "out there", and never will.

Well I think it's odd there's been no poltergeists since after the 1979s when technology advanced enough to spot a fraud a mile off. Funny that eh?

You need to follow Lainey and Ben on Instagram 😆

StupidFaces · 24/04/2023 19:34

Oh well, I’m staying in a haunted castle in October so really hoping i experience something to make me question my beliefs!

Ima. V sceptical person and didn't believe until I saw something.
I'm not a sensationalist and have told v few people.

Dramamarma · 24/04/2023 19:37

My house is 240 years old. When we moved in I was ready and waiting for some spooky action. So many people must have died in this house! But in fact there is the opposite- a few visitors have commented on the peacefulness and warmth of my house. And I don’t think my hosting skills are all that! 😆

I don’t know what to believe. I think there is so much we don’t know, it’s impossible to say for certain.

ConkerBonkers · 24/04/2023 19:38

I've had quite a lot of strange experiences and am pretty convinced that time is not linear, and that there is room for an alternate dimension from where spirit energy occasionally crosses into our own.

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 24/04/2023 19:39

I think there are two questions.

First, is it possible to see people who are not really there... do you believe people who say they saw a ghost.

Second, what causes this. Is it dead people or some other explanation?

I believe in the first point. That people genuinely see people, or images or people, that are not there. But I have zero explanation for it. I don't believe it's dead people returning as that doesn't make sense to me.

dishyrishi · 24/04/2023 19:40

I grew up in a family of spiritualist mediums. I don't know what I believe.

My gran always told us you will only see if you believe. I'm too damn scared to want to see, so therefore I didn't believe, but...

When my mother died strange things happened that could be construed as signs. Both physical and visual, but not an actual apparition (think touch, smell and flickering lights), I actually had to say out loud "please don't show yourself to me, I'm not open to this" and I've seen and felt nothing since.

MedievalMadness · 24/04/2023 18:40

I’ve never seen or sensed anything, but I know very down to earth people who have - and have been severely shaken out of their former scepticism. Not to mention a relative’s dog, who refused absolutely to put a paw over the threshold of a certain part of their ‘new’ old house.

My friends guide dog absolutely refused to step paw into our Marks & Sparks. Literally had to be pushed through the door. Just think he didn’t like it or remembered it was really boring for him.

My son hated M&S too. I think it was because he found it too hot.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 24/04/2023 20:08

I don’t think you believe until it happens to you.

Apart from what I assume is dh interfering with electrical etc and touching me I’ve got a black cat ghost that turned up around 2009. It’s moved house with me three times.

Dh saw it once & was freaked out “But, I saw a cat. It was running about” I told him that should’ve tipped him off it’s not our girl she only runs if I’m carrying her food.

legalseagull · 24/04/2023 20:36

I wonder what outfit I would pick to wear for eternity and haunt?

Fabulous, or jeans and a tshirt?!

😂 tricky one! One would want to look stunning, but should comfort trump fabulousness?!

You're not staying in a haunted castle.

You're staying in a castle that's making money out of claiming it's haunted.

Massive difference.

Well yeah, it’s a great way to bring in the tourists

I’m actually going as I’m a history geek

@ShatParp I hardly ever wash my jeans, so they're probably ingrained in my spirit by now

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/04/2023 21:48

My mother had paranormal experiences, as did my great grandmother. But I have an open mind. I’ve had sleep paralysis twice and it seemed so real

Anyway, another recommendation for Uncanny as the first three episodes of the latest series scared the s* out of me.

Tillyteacup · 24/04/2023 21:48

I believe in energy. Our hamster died a few months ago and for about a week afterwards we would all hear his water bottle going like he was drinking and hear his wheel and him biting the bars. Yes you could say that we were expecting the noises so we heard them but both my mum and my sons friend heard it too. My sons friend didn’t know we had ever had a hamster. Do i think we had a little ghost hamster lol? Absolutely not!! I think there was a bit of energy left over (like when you turn something electric off and the light remains for a few seconds). It gradually became less and less then went completely. It felt almost natural. None of us were frightened .

JudgeRinderonTinder · 24/04/2023 21:55

When you think about it properly, it is ridiculous. I used to believe as well, or not so much believe, but be a bit more open minded to it. Not so much now. I always think it’s curious how it’s always old buildings and Victorian clothes, untimely tragic deaths, and never just Peter from down the road who died last year of natural causes.

We all have decent phones now that take photos and videos very readily, yet not once has a ghost ever been convincingly captured. I guess I just learned the art of critical thought more as I got older 🤣

HecticHedgehog · 24/04/2023 21:59

I've never seen a ghost but have felt one. I stayed at a friends house once and the dread I felt in bed was unreal, I was terrified. I could sense it looking at me from near the window but couldn't see it. Never mentioned it to my friend until after she moved out and she'd never mentioned anything to me, but she felt it too. I've never felt anything like it before or since.

HecticHedgehog · 24/04/2023 21:59

I find it odd someone wouldn't believe in ghosts but would believe time slips happen though as there's no evidence of that either.

TheShade · 24/04/2023 22:01

I’ve had a couple of experiences that are spooky/can’t explain but I still don’t believe in ‘ghosts’, not really. I love hearing about people’s own ghost stories though.

CorsicaDreaming · 24/04/2023 22:03

MidlandCatGirl · 24/04/2023 17:26

I’m going to come across as a total odd bod but I’ve seen a fair number of ghosts and apart from a monk (who was also seen in the same house in the same place but by a different relative), they’ve all been in fairly modern - ie 1940’s onwards - clothing.

I just think some of us are shut off to seeing other things whereas some of us are more open.

Can you tell us a bit more about what you've seen? @MidlandCatGirl

TheShade · 24/04/2023 22:04

(Because I feel like it’s more about our brains/beliefs/culture/primal instincts sensing danger in the dark etc and I find it so interesting.) I wouldn’t stay alone in a ‘haunted house’ because I couldn’t trick my brain to not be scared even though I don’t rationally believe in ‘ghosts’.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/04/2023 22:13

I don’t know if I really believe or not but I do think that there’s a lot we don’t know about the human brain and it’s ability to project and see patterns and familiar shapes.

I think ghost stories probably originate from a time when people knew less about brain power and were more easily led by religion and myth and legend.
