Believing in ghosts

StupidFaces · 24/04/2023 08:34

I used to, now I think it’s ridiculous. People have been trying to prove the existence of ghosts for over 150 years and yet not one scrap of credible evidence to suggest they exist. I wish they did, I’d love it to be real but it just doesn’t make sense for them to exist does it?

Surely if ghosts were real, abattoirs would be haunted to fuck by the ghosts of dead cows? How come nobody ever sees a ghost dressed in trackies and Nike trainers? Why are they only ever dressed in Victorian/medieval clothes etc?

Do people think ghosts of fish haunt the ocean?

For those that do believe … what do you think about the above scenarios?

For those that done believe … would you be happy to spend a night alone in a supposedly haunted castle?

Shortly after mum died very unexpectedly, I was at my home alone feeling sad and wondering to myself if she would 'contact ' me. A woman's voice said loudly behind me (I actually jumped) " no, she never leaves home ". It wasn't mum's voice. I would love to be able to go back to the old house where she was born and always referred to as home even though she had not lived there for many years, to see if I could feel her presence.

ADogTwoCatsAndAFlan · 25/04/2023 10:53

I'd absolutely love to believe in ghosts. I would love for some dead family members to come back and visit me. So if ghosts exist, why haven't I been visited by my Grandparents, who know I would give anything to see them again? Do they just not love me enough to bother coming back to me? Am I being snubbed by my dead grandparents? 😂

I've lived in some very old houses, no ghosts there either. Our current house gave me pause, after we moved in here I started having very distressing dreams. It's not a particularly old house but has a very dodgy history. I started having very vivid dreams where I was spinning around and around on our bed, trying to call DH to help me but unable to. I was a bit spooked. Then I started having seizures, and what comes before them is always a weird spinning feeling. Like I'm standing still and the world around me is spinning around at a very rapid speed. So I'm pretty sure those dreams were me having milder seizures in my sleep. Nothing paranormal.

littlemissalwaystired · 25/04/2023 11:01

I'm not sure I believe, but equally on night shifts where I work I find it the spookiest thing ever and absolutely hate it! But that could be because people always tell stories about it😂

Of course it’s a load of bullshit and I heavily question the mental health of anyone who “believes”.

Wow! Just wow!

I used to be on the fence over ghosts

Until years ago

I used to have a friend-she was amazing-the mum I wished I had rather than the one I got
Anyway,we knew she was dying of lung cancer-we'd be lucky to get another year out of her
I was sat in a cafe with another friend, about 18 months later when she walked in said hello and that she had to go as she'd lost her bus pass in a shop
She left-and was dead within the next 48 hours
That's should have been the last time I saw her-until the day of her funeral
I was talking on the phone and stood up to get a diet coke out of the fridge
I shut the door and there was my friend-in the outfit I'd seen her in
She was as solid as anyone else
She smiled and faded away
I love to think she came back to say goodbye

Years before that my dd was about 9 and in bed asleep
I was just going up myself when I heard her screaming
She was sobbing that she'd seen a mister in her doorway,he smiled at her and vanished
I calmed her down and got her to describe him
She described him and i realised shed seen my darling grandad (he brought me up and died when I was 14)
Right down to the fact he had silver hair (he would take having grey hair-it was always silver) ,grey eyes, nice teeth that he popped out (that was his party trick when I was little) his feet where misty (he always suffered with his feet) and she said he seemed nice-just gave her a shock
She'd never seen a photo and I'd never described him to her
I like to think he was checking on her

About 18 months ago I was stood in my kitchen just daydreaming when I saw a white staffy dog (the dog had odd brindle markings on its back)
It ran from one side of my garden (hedge) to the other (fence) and disappeared
I went out to have a look for it-nope it had gone
A week later my son rings me-hed seen a dog online in a rescue and was on his way to get him
A few weeks later,he travels to see us-bringing his new dog
Yep,the same dog that ran across my garden

The odd thing about that one is the dog was alive (still is)
My mate said it was the dogs energy-showing me he would soon be part of my family

I'm still on the fence to a degree-I don't have evidence that my eyes where not playing tricks on me and someone could have told dd about her great grandad (everyone claimed they hadn't and she is adamant she saw what she saw)

Who knows?

Im not remotely woo but ive seen and said hi to a ghost before realising it wasn't a person, and taken an accidental photo of one. Im a complete sceptic but know what I saw so im quite conflicted about it all.
Brain says nonsense, gut says something is out there.

Should note that I was with someone else at the time and we both said hi, before saying "wtf" a few seconds later. So I wasn't seeing things.

Apparently you only become a ghost if you have unfinished business. Not sure what unfinished business a fish or cow would have.
I've also heard that animals don't have souls which is why we don't get ghost animals because the ghost is the soul.

I don't really believe. I'd like to. I've stayed in haunted hotels and worked in some very haunted buildings, even been on my own in them for hours late at night/wee hours of the morning. Only ever had one unexplained experience.

Do tell !

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 24/04/2023 18:49

Would you know if you saw a ghost in modern day clothing though? They wouldn't exactly stand out would they?

yes, especially if they disappear, or if it's someone you knew.

I think science will probably have an explanation in future.

EmmaEmerald · 25/04/2023 21:20

I'd also love to hear @SliceOfCakeCupOfTea experience. I was just thinking yesterday we haven't had a thread like that for ages.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/04/2023 21:42

So I was working very late/early setting up for a wedding in an old hotel in the NE. It was probably about 1am-ish and the floor I was on was only for functions and accessed by keycard (so basically hotel guests couldn't wander in my accident or mess up my setup). The only staff on at that time was the 2 night porters (2 incredibly lazy older blokes) and the duty manager (another bloke who was well known for being glued to the computer).

The night staff basically had to do hourly floor walks and the rest of the time they'd be sat in the back office unless called away by a guest or emergency both of which were very rare at that time on a Thursday night. One of the fellas had been by for his hourly floor walk about 20 mins beforehand and popped in to see if I was happy locking up my floor so they didn't have to come back up.

I had the rooms all set, everything was ready so I locked up the main function room then checked the other rooms to make sure I had turned lights/Aircon off and closed the curtains. All done. As I was walking down the corridor I heard a knock like someone knocking on a door. I assumed it was someone who was trying to get on the function floor but there wasn't anyone there. Heard a noise behind on of the locked function room doors and somehow the curtains were open.

I remember checking they were closed. I knew they had been. They were massive red velvet things with gold trim. Very heavy and I absolutely hate touching velvet so it wasn't like I would have opened them in autopilot mode or something. No idea how the hell they were open but they were properly open.

I pulled the door closed and locked it, ran down to the back office and made one of the blokes come back up with me as I was properly freaked out. He insisted I must have forgot to close them or opened them again or something, even possibly a guest had snuck through. Anyways, we went back to the room and the curtains were fucking closed again.

Obviously they all took the piss out of me (light heartedly!) But I know those curtains had been opened and closed by someone other than me, and no one other than me was there.

Everything else that's ever happened has been explained away but next time I did that venue I insisted on bringing my assistant with me.

EmmaEmerald · 25/04/2023 22:03

Slice not sure if this is better or worse but could someone have been up there playing a trick?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/04/2023 22:17

EmmaEmerald · 25/04/2023 22:03

Slice not sure if this is better or worse but could someone have been up there playing a trick?

I can't see how! The three blokes wouldn't be, definitely not the type nor were any of them nimble enough to race up and down the stairs and not be seen/heard, plus I would have heard them coming through the doors to the floor.
Guests couldn't get through the door.

FrenchBoule · 25/04/2023 22:38

I’ve never seen a ghost had a few experiences that my rational mind can’t explain.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 25/04/2023 22:41

Perhaps some people are just in tune to the woo and some aren’t. I’d love to hear from my late parents but perhaps I’m just not spiritually inclined. Mind you, having to admit that ghosts actually exist would terrify me so probably best not.

Beanfield2023 · 26/04/2023 08:59

PollyAmour · 24/04/2023 19:12

I once nursed an elderly lady who was receiving end of life care and she told me Joe, her husband, was waiting for her. She could see him in the room.
Probably morphine induced delusions but she died very peacefully.

My grandad said the same , he was on morphine he said someone was waiting for him in the corner of the room . I like to think this helped him to die peacefully. My aunt when she was dying kept looking at a corner in her room and smiling.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/04/2023 09:04

I want to believe. I've seen strange things, but I don't know if that's simply my brain putting a 'weird' spin on normal things just because it knows I want to believe.

I DO believe that there are things we haven't discovered yet and maybe can never know - about time, about physics, about the human brain. Flashes of 'intuition' or telepathy could never be researched because they are so scattered and random, and maybe ghost (or whatever energy provokes images that we see as ghosts) are also random.

So yes. I am on the fence with believing in the images of dead people still walking, but believe there could be something in as yet undiscovered physics to account for the things people see.

HeartShapedSea · 26/04/2023 11:03

Not had time to read all the thread yet but I've experienced a few things.
Most recent my Mum and I were visiting my Dad in hospital, we were walking back towards a lift on the first floor near ITU and both saw a man walk into the lift. We were side on so saw him go in but couldn't directly see into the lift. We hung back (didn't want to catch anything and pass to my dad as he was very unwell).
We waited a while but the doors didnt close so we walked further up to the lift and checked and it was empty.
Weird

mamabear715 · 26/04/2023 11:59

Of COURSE animals have souls!!!
My dogs have been back, & even my horse.

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 26/04/2023 12:53

Yes I agree, animals do have souls! I do believe but have only had one experience myself which involved a cat getting onto my bed and curling up behind the crook of my knees to go to sleep, I was staying with a friend, switched the light on - no cat and the door was locked.

However my sister and her husband have lived in a very active house for over 30 years. They have an old lady who walks across the lounge up the stairs, seen by a few people including visitors, and a man with his dog who has been seen by both her and her adult daughter in the cellar which is converted to a bedroom. both visitations seem to be repetitive in nature, their house is over 200 years old, so Ive always wondered about stone tape theory?

KarmaStar · 26/04/2023 12:55

A "ghost" is purely an energy,a memory of previous events, such as the sound of soldiers matching around battlefields or the nurse seen at 0400hrs walking along the corridor and through a wall of an old hospital.
a " spirit" is a person or animal who has returned to visit. It takes a lot of energy for them to become visable to us.
you don't have to believe ,it's your choice.if you are certain that you are born then die like a flower, that's fine.e
some believe in the circle of life,i.e.leaving spirit world, coming here, learning what you need to before returning to review your life.
why on earth you think slaughtered innocent animals would want to hang around an abattoir watching others screaming in fear and agony is beyond me.They go back to the spirit world to be healed and to be free.s
nobody can disprove it either.
read up on energy it's fascinating,I don't mean in a red bull kind of way,but the fact that every single living thing is made of energy.

ReadtheReviews · 26/04/2023 13:11

Ordinarily, I would say nonsense. But my mum and my grandad both heard and then saw someone at the same time. They are/were the most straight laced non-woo people imaginable so I believe them.
It was a full figure 'frieze' effect of my great grandmother, (his MiL) a few days after she died, passing a doorway. The sound was a floorboard creak.
Inclined to believe more in sort of folds of space/time than ghosts haunting us iyswim.

GreatBigBoots · 26/04/2023 13:18

I am very interested in hearing/reading about paranormal experiences - I find it truly fascinating and at some level would quite like to believe. But I don't. I do believe that people (and animals) can experience very strong feelings about places that have seemingly no rational explanation and that sometimes we seem to see, hear or know that we can't explain. I suspect that there are scientific explanations for these experiences that we just don't understand yet. I also think that on some occasions our brains tell us that we see, hear or feel things to make sense of tiny, real changes in things like light, temperature, magnetic energy etc that we can't consciously identify. I don't think these are ghosts, but I do think that people genuinely believe that they have experienced something that can only be explained as a ghost.

I had a family member a few generations older than me who 100% believed in ghosts and was convinced that she had seen quite a few. She did not like the fact that I tried to find scientific explanations for her experiences and promised that she would come back as a ghost to prove to me that they/she existed. She passed away almost 20 years ago and I have not seen her yet...

GraysPapaya · 24/04/2023 22:20

I can’t help but think, if they were real why has no one ever caught one on camera? I want to be open minded but I think most things can be explained

Loads have been caught on camera though. There are so many pictures, videos and cctv ones that are incredible. Obviously there are fakes but plenty that have no explanation.

Im so glad I had someone with me who saw the same as me so it couldn’t be put down to hallucinations.

OopsAnotherOne · 26/04/2023 13:37

I don't personally currently believe in ghosts because I have no seen any evidence which convinces me of their existence. I am open minded though, if I ever see something which conclusively proves their existence to me, I will believe they exist. But as of now, I have not found anything which proves to me that they are certainly real (and trust me, I've been looking!). I'd love for them to be real though, so I'm not saying I'll never believe in them, but for me to believe in their existence I have to first be shown genuine evidence of this.
