Believing in ghosts

StupidFaces · 24/04/2023 08:34

I used to, now I think it’s ridiculous. People have been trying to prove the existence of ghosts for over 150 years and yet not one scrap of credible evidence to suggest they exist. I wish they did, I’d love it to be real but it just doesn’t make sense for them to exist does it?

Surely if ghosts were real, abattoirs would be haunted to fuck by the ghosts of dead cows? How come nobody ever sees a ghost dressed in trackies and Nike trainers? Why are they only ever dressed in Victorian/medieval clothes etc?

Do people think ghosts of fish haunt the ocean?

For those that do believe … what do you think about the above scenarios?

For those that done believe … would you be happy to spend a night alone in a supposedly haunted castle?

Well I think it's odd there's been no poltergeists since after the 1979s when technology advanced enough to spot a fraud a mile off. Funny that eh?

stardustpixy · 24/04/2023 18:28

Pets don't have souls? Says who? The vanity of man knows no bounds ..

bebanjo · 24/04/2023 18:36

If ghosts are real it begs many more questions, is it the soul that becomes the ghost? What is a soul, how did it evolve, do primates have them, when did they evolve? Why do we not see ghosts of ‘cave men’?
if they evolved and only humans have them, Why?
what energy sustains a ghost, why are they not seen in great numbers by the thousands of tourists that visit, Auschwitz, Rome, battle Filds, Manhattan ect.
if it’s not ‘the soul’ , what is it, how does it know that the body had unfinished business?

MedievalMadness · 24/04/2023 18:40

I’ve never seen or sensed anything, but I know very down to earth people who have - and have been severely shaken out of their former scepticism. Not to mention a relative’s dog, who refused absolutely to put a paw over the threshold of a certain part of their ‘new’ old house.

My friends guide dog absolutely refused to step paw into our Marks & Sparks. Literally had to be pushed through the door. Just think he didn’t like it or remembered it was really boring for him.

holaholiday · 24/04/2023 18:42

theres a fab podcast on Radio 4 called "Uncanny" ...now on series 2.... highly recommend it and see if it challenges your belief system (..or lack of!) not to be listened to late at night!

MaryJean87 · 24/04/2023 18:48

I do believe, but I don't think we're meant to know everything there is to know about the afterlife. If we knew it all as fact, it would affect the way we live our lives here on Earth. Things that matter, wouldn't matter and vice versa. During our physical lives we retain zero or minimal knowledge of what lies beyond this life and that's the way it has to be.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 24/04/2023 18:49

Would you know if you saw a ghost in modern day clothing though? They wouldn't exactly stand out would they?

dudsville · 24/04/2023 18:51

There's a very scary short story by Annie Proulx about the dead cows coming back to haunt.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/04/2023 18:52

If ghosts are souls, why are they even wearing clothes, and if they can go through walls how come they don’t fall though the floor. That said I do believe there’s something unexplained going on, time slips, or glitches in the matrix or something.

Whatalife88 · 24/04/2023 18:52

As someone who has seen a ghost and has had things said to me about a deceased relative that was literally impossible to know, I can assure you they exist and are not just time lapses.

HashBrownandBeans · 24/04/2023 18:53

I have seen and heard loads of weird things in my life and my mum used to laugh at me and say it was ridiculous…until she saw a woman in her office at work at 6am in the morning smiling through the door glass of a locked room, right at her. My mum actually smiled back before her brain kicked in and she realised what she was seeing. There was only my mum and security in the building. She was a believer then!

MaryHoldTheCandleSteadyWhileIShaveTheChickensLeg · 24/04/2023 18:53

I work in an ancient manor house that's almost 800 years old.

There's no such thing as ghosts, but oh boy do people like to think so.

And they're always the sort who think they're 'special' in some way. Standing there shaking and shivering like a muppet, while the 'spirits appear to them' 🙄🙄

Theconceptoftime · 24/04/2023 19:03

I don't belive in ghosts but I have seen one. I'm not sure how that works actually. I saw one there for a really long time, not moving, as clear as day, then it just disappeared.

I guess it is what people would call a ghost. I don't know what it was. The only way we ever might know is if when we die we find out but there may be nothing or there may be something and we still might be oblivious.

Plantgeumstoday · 24/04/2023 19:03

I never used to believe in ghosts until I ( and my colleague) saw one while on shift at the hospital.
It was an old man who walked into a female ward then disappeared through the wall.

BeetleBailey · 24/04/2023 19:04

I'm open minded. Never seen anything but I know a guy who told me a story about an incident he had

The thing that got me is that I've known him quite a few years via work. He's a serious person and not one to ever joke

We were talking about me having recently watched the Enfield Poltergeist as he was from London himself and he then told me of a young girl that appeared in his apartment more than once with a burnt face

His partner had seen her too. The apartments were built over an old train line which he had investigated after the incident and found people had died in a crash a long time ago

He believed in what he was telling me

Capitulatingpanda · 24/04/2023 19:06

I want to believe but have never seen even a hint of anything paranormal and think a lot of sightings of ghosts are likely nothing of the sort.
I have been listening to the Uncanny podcast recently and I do like the way he gets a believer and someone to debunk everything on each episode. They make for entertaining listening and occasionally I find bits believable.

Unicorn34 · 24/04/2023 19:10

I believe in spirits, energies, apparitions etc because I have seen, heard, felt them but I wouldn't expect anyone else to believe me as they didn't have the same experience. Could I respectfully ask that if everyone who believes in God has seen him/her? I wouldn't question their beliefs either. Let's just live and let live x

FlemishHorse · 24/04/2023 19:11

“Them as went to Heaven wouldn’t want to come back. And them as went to t’other place wouldn’t be allowed to come back. So don’t fret about ghosts.”

My granny.

PollyAmour · 24/04/2023 19:12

I once nursed an elderly lady who was receiving end of life care and she told me Joe, her husband, was waiting for her. She could see him in the room.
Probably morphine induced delusions but she died very peacefully.

Hawkins003 · 24/04/2023 19:15

I guess it depends on the type of beings and if it's an energy being etc, Plus I'm presuming the various departments would shut down any ghosts ect otherwise can you imagine how society would be, it would end up like the ghost busters films or similar.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 24/04/2023 19:16

Of course it’s a load of bullshit and I heavily question the mental health of anyone who “believes”.

CaroleSinger · 24/04/2023 19:17

So when the ghost died did their clothes die with them? They never seem to be naked?

christmascalypso · 24/04/2023 19:17

I think what people who see 'ghosts' are seeing visual hallucinations. Your eyes can play many tricks on you. Read 'hallucinations' by Oliver Sacks .

PollyAmour · 24/04/2023 19:23

Charles Bonnet Syndrome is interesting, and possibly the reason why some people see ghosts.

mamabear715 · 24/04/2023 19:25

I've answered these questions a million times. So I'll just add a quote.
For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible.
