Diane Abbott

To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

Even a university education cannot guarantee against stupidity.

I don’t think she said anything wrong. Jewish people, Irish people and travellers aren’t races, so how can they experience racism?

Dunno, ask Hitler? The nazis could somehow tell, even with the secular ones.

But it was hitler that tried to push the incorrect theory of a ‘Jewish race’. I thought we had moved away and rejected that.

I don’t think she said anything wrong. Jewish people, Irish people and travellers aren’t races, so how can they experience racism? I’m unsure of her ‘private’ views on Jewish people and antisemitism, but in my view the article isn’t incorrect.

What Keir should concentrate on is releasing the full unedited Forde Report that said Corbyn and others were not guilty of antisemitism and most of it was concocted by the media.

It also is disrespectful to Palestinians who are facing persecution daily. Children taken from homes for throwing stones or wanting to cross an occupied area to go to school.

What about the racism they face, when they leave and come to the UK?

IDueLiocorni · 23/04/2023 13:38

@Summerhillsquare

Exactly, what she said is accurate.

No it isn’t. Crack the spine of a history book for once in your life, you might actually learn something.

Turning to today though, many people are unaware of the Home Office’s official hate crime statistics (published last year) which show that despite making up a tiny fraction of the UK population, Jews were the victims of nearly a quarter of all hate crimes.

In the US, antisemitic incidents hit record levels in 2022, continuing a five-year upswing in antisemitism amid mounting fears the behavior of influential public figures like Donald Trump and Kanye West are normalizing hate. There are a lot of shocking statistics from the FBI on this.

I’m sorry I don’t know the equivalent figures for the traveller / Romani community, if anyone does have these I’d be interested to see them.

Diane Abbott's claim that Jewish people cannot suffer 'racism' is outrageous in itself, but made all the more extraordinary given all that has unfolded in the Labour Party over the past few years. She and her allies on the far-left of the Party could never accept how bad antisemitism had become because they do not even acknowledge that it is a form of racism. She was an uncompromising supporter of Corbyn, a man who as leader of a social Democratic Party party couldn’t accept the world definition of antisemitism because he breaches it. I’m delighted he’s been thrown out of the party.

And as for her, kick her out and keep her out. Her views mean she’s not fit for office.

By the by, this is a fantastic website for those wanting to learn more about historic and modern day antisemitism, and Jewish history in general - https://www.rootsmetals.com/ Well researched, balanced and fair minded.

As I said up thread, Gypsies were murdered by the Nazis on the grounds of their race. So tell me why you don't feel that is racist?

FrostyFifi · 23/04/2023 13:38

Oh and the Roma are a race - they're pretty obviously darker skinned in Eastern Europe. And yes they experience a hell of a lot of systemic racism and have generally far poorer standards of living.

OMG. You should be ashamed of your ignorance.

Judaism is a religion and being Jewish is an ethnicity/a race.

Irish people, that is those native to Ireland are also an ethnic group.

Gypsies, or rather Roma is also an ethic group.

I find it strange that it's been blamed on 'a draft' being sent by accident.

If you didn't really believe these things, you'd never even write them as a draft, surely? Hmm

You’re all confusing what a race is. It isn’t ‘anyone persecuted by Hitler’. Hitler also persecuted homosexuals and the disabled. Doesn’t mean they’re races.

Jewish people do belong to specific ethnic groups (Sephardic, Ashkenazic and Mizrahi).

Elderflower14 · 23/04/2023 13:40

I went to the Jewish Museum in Vienna in 2020... I was shocked and saddened that they needed a security guard on the door..😔 😔 😔 😔

JeweyJew · 23/04/2023 13:40

I've experienced first hand antisemitic attacks many times, including physical attacks on several occasions. As has almost anyone I know (albeit not always physical).

It's par for the course in Stamford Hill. Ironically it's usually by non-whites.

That said, I really don't see the terrible hatred and antisemitism in Abbot's words. What I can see is a letter indicative of her general incompetence and intelligence.

It makes it look even worse in my opinion. ‘This is what I wrote initially because it’s my true opinion but you weren’t meant to SEE it’.

She should just stand by what she wrote it’s clear that’s what she really thinks.

@Whataretheodds

Of course, but there were also some Jews who were able to hide in plain sight - adopting new names, histories. Sometimes dying their hair blonde etc. I think Abbots clumsily made point was simply that some ethnic minorities physically “stand out” more than others and thus literally always need to be on guard, whereas other groups will face racism/prejudice but it’s not a “constant” threat. You will often here Jewish people in public life in modern Britain say “actually, I’m Jewish/I have Jewish ancestry”. You never hear black or Asian people say that. Because it’s virtually never necessary.

So we can disregard any racism suffered by people as long as they look white? What about people who have dual heritage?

Keir Starmer has yet again shown how a party leader should act in these situations, something Boris and now Rishi seem incapable of.

Agreed and let's remember before anti-Semitism is smeared against the current Labour Party his wife and children are Jewish and proud of it.

And he persecuted Catholics, Slavs and trade unionists to name a few other groups.

Twelve million people died in concentration - not six million.

Minierme · 23/04/2023 12:17

Yeah… it’s pretty stupid thing to say when millions of Jews were killed because of being Jewish. Seeing it only as a faith and therefore not something that you can be racially discriminated because of, is a common confusion though.

As an ethnic Jew who belongs to another religion I often wonder what to put in diversity/ethnicity boxes. I flip flop between white British which feels like my ethnicity is being erased or white other which doesn’t feel quite right either. I’d love to Jewish as an ethnicity acknowledged more.

I agree.

All prejudice is horrible, but no-one has attempted to systematically and brutally eradicate all black people from all nations the way Hitler attempted to eradicate Jewish people.

HawthornLantern · 23/04/2023 13:44

I was just coming on to say that Diane Abbott’s constituency includes Stamford Hill which is one of the largest Hasidic jewish communities in the UK. I’m glad to see Bergmum beat me to it. I lived there for about 10 years, although I’m not Jewish myself. It was a great place to be, I have wholly happy memories, and I looked it up last year as I still have friends there and found that antisemitic hate crimes have been surging. In 2023 alone kids have been grabbed by the throat and tossed off buses. A couple of years ago, a pregnant woman was attacked (pillowcase over her head and punched repeatedly). An elderly Rabbi (from memory one who had survived the Holocaust as a child) was “beaten bloody” walking past a library. This, this is Abbott’s constituency. How dare she have written that letter.

Hang on. So if the Nazi-propagated view that there is such a thing as a ‘Jewish race’ is incorrect, that means Jewish aren’t a race. So how can they experience racism? Or do you believe Jewish people are a race?

Maiyakat · 23/04/2023 13:45

This isn't a clumsily worded reply in an interview, this is a letter she wrote by choice. I just don't understand what she was trying to achieve. Why do we need a hierarchy of prejudice, can't we just condemn it all?

LondonMummer · 23/04/2023 13:45

"You’re all confusing what a race is. It isn’t ‘anyone persecuted by Hitler’. Hitler also persecuted homosexuals and the disabled. Doesn’t mean they’re races."

Thanks for educating me on my own racial origins. You're entirely wrong but I'm enjoying you displaying your repeated ignorance
