Diane Abbott

To say that Diane Abbott is doing her best to help the Labour Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

Hideous antisemitism seemingly not gone away at all and add that to the horrendous misogyny in the Labour Party I wonder at this point why ANYONE would vote for them.

AIBU?

Surely you're not thinking the Conservative party will be better for women?

I’m not sure how you managed to extrapolate that from Flowerly’s post?

Flowerly · 23/04/2023 14:27

I disagree - that's just your black and white thinking.

Fwiw I am an ex Labour party member who is completely politically homeless. I will vote for no one and intend to spoil my ballot (again) with a sticker which says that women are adult human females.

She's also being very selective with regards to segregation because I can as sure as hell remember signs stating no blacks, Irish or travellers allowed

Me too.

Very common in the 50s and 60s

I find it strange that it's been blamed on 'a draft' being sent by accident.

If you didn't really believe these things, you'd never even write them as a draft, surely? Hmm

You'd think!

Op, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the Tories are not racist. Labour has an honourable history of fighting racism, whereas the Tories’ history on this is appalling.

The modern day Conservative party is less racist than Labour. And less sexist. Despite intuitive assertions due to where they feature on the ‘spectrum’.

malapast · 23/04/2023 14:33

Of course the Tory party would never use the most popular woman's site in the country to push anti-Labour narratives or far-right European racist tropes. would they....

Sweden has thrown women and girls under the bus and have been trying to keep the rise in rape/sexual assault quiet. It is the wrong kind of perpetrator you see.

suburbophobe · 14/04/2023 22:13

Sweden has mass killings and rapes.

You really can't throw that out there without giving some evidence i.e. a link or two @TodayInahurry

I read two country's news and have not come across that kind of sensationalist reporting. If true it would be all over the worldwide headlines I reckon.
I also have friends in Sweden.

Admittedly I haven't read this whole thread, but where does OP fall into that trap? Because I certainly can't see anything in her post suggesting Tories aren't racist. For many on the left racism and bigotry is assumed to be the norm from Tories, so it often feels more shocking when it comes from the left who supposedly have a long history of fighting racism (unlike the Tories). I was quite actively involved with Labour for decades but witnessed appalling antisemitism towards some Jewish people in CLP meetings. Unfortunately this "honourable history" of anti-racism you speak of very often doesn't apply to some minority groups in Left 'spaces', groups who don't comfortably fit their un-nuanced anti-globalisation narrative. And there's plenty of evidence of it on this thread too, and that's my takeaway from only from reading a few pages. Whataboutery is not the way to acknowledge and fight racism and discrimination. It just encourages more division.

here

In the 16,17, & 18 th centuries , there were plenty of white, not white seeming, just white, Britons being abducted and sold into slavery rim the south and west coasts of England by ‘Barbary Pirates’ ( Arabs). The women were much prized in the harems, the men often ended up on the rowing benches of the galleys.

St. Vincent de Paul, a French priest , was captured at sea in the Mediterranean and spent two years in the galleys.

‘Rule Britannia’ actually celebrates the revival and success of the British Navy in stopping the slave trade into North Africa.

I've got a huge soft spot for Diane Abbott. I don't really know why, she is such a total plonker as this shows yet again.

Yes, agree with this, and buried my head in my hands when I saw the news this morning. As another PP said, it's such an embarrassing display of ignorance. Did she think all those security guards in Stamford Hill are standing around outside schools just for fun?! There's a 10-minute video by the zen taxi guy on YouTube that shows more intelligence and empathy towards the Jewish community than she has.

She's my MP and because she always gets such a huge majority, the other parties don't really bother with Hackney much. Last election, the other candidates were a Toryboy who looked about 17 and some green/libden middle class types who, though well-meaning, had very little political experience. Plus a whole roster of independent weirdos with an axe to grind.

Goodness knows what the next election holds for us now 🫣

What? I actually have no idea what you're talking about, or what you have taken from my post?

What exactly is "high and mighty" about saying that I have experienced prejudice but recognise that this is not remotely the same as system racism? Can you explain?

Unspeakable really. David Baddiel on twitter has re-posted a clip of him talking about antisemitism which is excellent. She should watch it.

What about his blacking up etc?

I just read what she wrote. I probably don’t agree with her, but I’ve no problem with free speech.

“They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable….but they are not all their lives subject to racism.”

Again, not sure I agree with that, but I don’t see it as inflammatory/massively offensive - day to day in the UK, I expect black and Asian people are more likely to experience certain common forms of racism (ie being subjected to remarks or being treated differently) than are Jewish people, as the aforementioned groups are simply more visibly different from the white majority population. What she said was probably clumsily worded, and is probably a comment that didn’t even need to be opened, but it’s hardly the massive racist faux pas it’s being painted as.

I can assure you that Jewish people are subject to plenty of remarks.

Having someone tell you it's a shame you weren't all gassed when you're merely waiting at a bus-stop with your husband and newborn is pretty chilling and upsetting.

Are there really people on here defending this bloody woman?!

Sallyh87 · 23/04/2023 14:55

What’s a bit scary to me is that clearly her views are so acceptable to the people she associates with that she felt it was okay to put them in writing and publish them.

When serious allegations starting being levelled at the Labour Party and Corbyn, I was really sceptical as I assumed in this day and age antisemitism was so unacceptable it couldn’t be possible at such an institutional level. Clearly, I was very wrong.

It must be very scary for British Jewish people.

EllaDisenchanted · 23/04/2023 14:55

@Abhannmor what zionist lobby?! As a Jewish woman, in the UK, I experienced anti-semitic hate crimes growing up, as did the rest of my family on multiple occasions. It was not simply 'prejudice' as Diane Abbot suggests; there is security in all Jewish schools and nurseries (on all spectrums of religious observance) not because we experience some 'prejudice' against us, but because there are real, credible, documented, ongoing threats against my community. Calling out Diane Abbot's minimisation of what Jews (and Irish and Traveller people) face has nothing to do with a 'zionist lobby'. Why are you a) conflating Jews and Zionists, and b) assuming that if JEWS speak out against anti-semitism, it must be driven by some all powerful 'zionist lobby'?

I would say it felt a little bit worse than 'prejudice' when at a London pro-palestinian rally some supporters shouted "Fuck the JEWS. Fuck their daughters. Fuck their mothers. Rape their daughters", and JEWS were targeted and attacked. Jew does not equal zionist. Something you, as they did, clearly fail to grasp.

Iwasafool · 23/04/2023 14:56

sugardonutnojam · 23/04/2023 12:55

It was deeply offensive and not just antisemitism at the heart of her post. Young Diane isn’t great at history; the Irish people were the first slaves ever sold; about 30,000 of them to British Colonies including Jamaica. They were known as Indentured servants rather than slaves. How dare she suggest Jewish or Irish people experienced something other than racism.

I think the history of slavery goes back a lot further than that.

Wiccan · 23/04/2023 15:00

I think it's about time . Every time that women opens her mouth nothing but utter crap comes out .she's an embarrassment.
