Friend told daughter to 'fuck off and die'

My daughter and her friend are both 10, unbeknownst to me yesterday whilst I was in the shower, they pranked called a few of my friends. I found out because one of my friends text me to tell me. I said no more and that was that.

This morning daughter says to me, 'when we prank called your friend, 'Pete' he told us to 'fuck off and die' three times.'

I wasn't really sure how to handle the situation as they obviously shouldn't have been prank calling but also I think it's pretty obvious they are children.

So I text Pete and the messages went like this -

Me - Hey did you say to Amelia to go fuck herself and die yesterday, she said her and her friend prank called you yesterday, I didn’t know. Did you not realise it was her I presume? Xx

Pete - I didn't until she said her name!!! My intuition was right!!!

I don't really know what he means but I feel really uncomfortable about this.

Am I being dramatic? Should I leave it at that? Is it their own fault for prank calling?

I see attitudes like yours on social media when people complain about kids playing Knock Down Ginger. The child has done it once but the person on the receiving end might get it every weekend and answering the door might be difficult for them.

It's good that the girls didn't say something nasty but the recipient of a prank call isn't unreasonable to be annoyed. Admittedly I wouldn't say "and die" but I might say "Get a life " because it's a waste of my time. You don't know who is waiting for important phone calls or if someone finds answering the phone difficult so might react badly to the fact that it was a prank call. If they used your mobile then your number might have popped up and he may have been disappointed that it wasn't you.

NameChange647 · 16/04/2023 17:37

Did you not message the friends they had prank called to apologise after you found out what they'd been doing? Anyway if he knew it was your daughter and he said that then yes he's out of order.

Thesharkradar · 16/04/2023 17:37

I'd be straight round Pete's with my baseball bat

Sux2buthen · 16/04/2023 17:35

I am calm, my kids aren't being rank and calling people for shits and giggles, followed by whining that they got told where to go.
Pete sounds like he's got your kid figured out, good on ya Pete

So you are suggesting that because my child prank called him she should die? Ew. Please seek help.

They're 10, most children prank call at some point, It's hardly a criminal offence

Pete doesn't sound very nice

TomatoSandwiches · 16/04/2023 17:38

By your DDs behaviour, your lack of concern and the type of company you keep I find myself confused about the type of response you expect or want tbh.

Some people find prank calls really unsettling, it's not funny or OK unless it's to Moe on The Simpsons.

WCRoulade · 16/04/2023 17:39

You're focusing on the wrong thing here. If you don't make prank calls then you don't get told to fuck off and die, that needs to be the lesson here.

L3ThirtySeven · 16/04/2023 17:39

Pete did not tell Amelia to fuck off and die because he did not know he was speaking to her. Pete only knew he was being prank called by either a teen faking a child voice or a child.

I think his comment to you shows that 1) he didn’t know who called him but 2) his intuition was correct in that it was a prank call.

I would lean into this is why you shouldn’t prank call people. I don’t think it is wise to get into the tangle of Pete should have been nice and polite, because then that is telling Amelia when she is prank called she should be nice and polite- and we all know the kinds of heavy breathing, what are you wearing, guess where I want to touch you calls she’s going to get…

Id shrug and say, Pete gave a good example of what you should say to a prank caller.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/04/2023 17:32

If someone prank called me the first time I'd just hang up, the second time I'd tell them to stop by the third time I'd be pissed off. That would accelerate based on time of the day and what I was doing.

You say you were in the shower so was it reasonably early in the morning and did they wake him up?

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime

say what? Showers (at home) generally work 24/7. There's no law about showering early in the morning.

it's not always possible to tell it's a child on the phone.

@leepingup if I didn't know it was a pre teen i might have said 'oh do fuck off' but I'd never say 'fuck off & die' to random irritant.

it seems weird that he says his instinct was right, but he may just have meant that he was being pranked, not that it was your DD.

I'd have given DD what for & taken/sent her friend home. They need to know it's not funny & it's not acceptable.

m I'd bit a bit wary with DD around that bloke.

AutumnCrow · 16/04/2023 17:34

How did they know Pete's number? Were they using your mobile phone?

Exactly. Doesn't OPS phone have a lock? Why would you be going through your mums phone contacts at 10 years old?? Odd.

SnarkyBag · 16/04/2023 17:39

If he said it once he knew it was your dd I’d take that to mean he didn’t much like you or your dd!

I’d be irritated by a prank call but if it was a friends kid I’d perhaps give them a stern word or two but if I liked my friend I wouldn’t tell their child to fuck off and die even if I happened to think their child was a little shit. Based on the intuition comment also I wonder if he may not have a high opinion of your dd.

mbosnz · 16/04/2023 17:40

Mmmm, you take your victim as you find them. So these children's victim is one grouchy bear, and has no problems telling children to 'fuck off and die', when prank called. The children have no cause for complaint, and neither do their parents, who would do well to sanction their children for misuse of a telephone.

Where did this comment say that? Ridiculous

Curseofthenation · 16/04/2023 17:42

It was OTT but I agree that your daughter needs to learn that there are consequences for inconsiderate behaviour.

Soproudoflionesses · 16/04/2023 17:42

threecupsofteaminimum · 16/04/2023 17:31

I'd be more concerned about disciplining my kid for prank calling my friends than what the recipient of one of the calls said to them. Extraordinary.

Me too!!
Entitled much op?
Same as saying my dd punched someone and complaining they punched her back!! 10 is very young to be prank calling.

Tandora · 16/04/2023 17:42

Tandora · 16/04/2023 17:32

This is all very odd. I would text Pete back and asked why he said that to her?

I’m also confused as to why you didn’t text the people your dd had called to apologise ?

Lizzt2007 · 16/04/2023 17:42

leepingup · 16/04/2023 17:30

They're 10 😂 calm down.

And this is why kids are absolute vile little brats now. 10 is old enough to know right from wrong. 10 is old enough to understand consequences. And your response to their bad behaviour is 'calm down their 10'.

SecretiveSquirrel · 16/04/2023 17:42

Did you text only when you heard about the swearing?

If my kid had prank called someone, I would immediately be calling them all to apologise and grovel. I would be so embarrassed. I would then raise the swearing.

I would feel quite stressed out by a prank call until I found out the identity of the perpetrator. Children or not.

Mischance · 16/04/2023 17:43

His response was OTT - but when people say that they do not literally want you to die. He shouldn't have said it (particularly if he knew who it was) and your DD and her friends should not have been prank calling; but children do silly things sometimes and need to be picked up on it. I should refrain from further discourse about it with the man involved.

sparklefresh · 16/04/2023 17:43

museumum · 16/04/2023 17:34

Natural consequence I’d say - you prank call people, some will get angry and possibly threatening.

Exactly. That's what you get for being stupid. I'd have no sympathy and would be telling her so.

KarmaStar · 16/04/2023 17:44

You need to make sure she doesn't prank people.
He was out of order but you're making it into something bigger than it is.
She's not bothered, hopefully they both have learnt a lesson and move on.
You should too.

Kvetching · 16/04/2023 17:44

I don’t suppose you’re thrilled at what your friend said, but that’s the risk your daughter took making annoying calls.

I’d be getting your daughter to apologise.

caringcarer · 16/04/2023 17:44

I'd be punishing child for snooping in my phone to get his number and prank calling.

Tiredalwaystired · 16/04/2023 17:45

Why is Pete the bad guy in this?

Your kid wouldn’t have been told anything if she had behaved. She clearly knew she was being irritating.

Seems like you’re deflecting.

Mamapiggywig · 16/04/2023 17:45

I had two children prank calling me on my work phone for almost a month, constantly all day when I had families trying to
reach me for help. In the end I had to threaten the police after they forgot to withhold their number. It’s not nice to be on the phone and receive a prank call, worst if you get loads of them, so if they got a bit of verbal on the other end, they shouldn’t have done it.
